Springfield, IL 62701-1796
(800)665-5576 (only within Illinois) The Illinois State Library was created more than 150 years ago to serve the needs of state government. As the official library for state government, it has come a long way since 1839 when the young Secretary of State, Stephen A. Douglas, saw to it that space was reserved next to his new office for a small, fledgling library. Today, the State Library has become a computer-age doorway to worldwide information, providing patrons with an electronic bridge to the collections of universities, public and corporate libraries, and new information systems that will continue to develop into the 21st century and beyond.
The State Library Building
The Illinois State Library was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst and White to harmonize with the other buildings in Springfield's Capitol Complex. The exterior features Indiana limestone set over a base of granite highlighted by a frieze etched with the names of 35 of Illinois' most distinguished authors. These 35 authors were either born in Illinois or spent a significant portion of their careers in Illinois.

When Mark Forrest comes to Bluffton, Illinois, to be pastor of one of the town's churches, the first parishioner he meets is Judge Hartley a former acquaintance who has an intense dislike for heresies and an uncanny ability for detecting them. Settling into a routine, the new pastor begins building up the church until a seed of discontent, so quietly planted, begins to sprout and grow among the congregation. The Reverend Forrest is censured and leaves Bluffton, abandoning church, friends and the one he loves. But Forrest is exonerated in a different setting and wins the hand of the beautiful Madge Hartley in the bargain. Set partially in a small river town in Illinois, Bluffton accurately depicts the provincialism which lives and breeds in small towns throughout the country. Literary World

Best of American Fiction, 1900-1945

Introduction
This minibibliography, second in a series of three minibibliographies listing the best of American fiction, covers the period from 1900 to 1945. Theodore Dreiser, author of Sister Carrie, was the first voice to be heard as American literature entered the twentieth century. His reportorial vision and his message that outside forces direct human affairs were a continuation of the trend toward realism and naturalism first presented in the works of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Frank Norris (see The Best of American Fiction: Early Period, minibibliography no. NSS 87-7 ). Dreiser also set the stage for other realistic and naturalistic American writers such as Erskine Caldwell, Jack London, and Sherwood Anderson. Other writers of the period from 1900 to 1945 focused their critical vision on particular regions or geographical locations. William Faulkner, Thomas Wolfe, and Ellen Glasgow captured the character and conflicts of the South while Willa Cather and O.E. Rolvaag chose the desolate American prairie as a setting to communicate timeless visions of humanity and its struggles. During the 1920s, two of the best known American literary figures, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, reflected the shattered idealism and morality of the Jazz Age in

17. What are you doing to prevent this?
Despite the entreaty of Loyalists for foreign aid that is reflected in this and other similar posters, the Non-Intervention Agreement (NIA), signed by France and England in August 1936 and quickly ratified by twenty-seven other countries, was something of a barrier to international involvement on the Republican side. Nevertheless, Republican forces did receive aid from a number of foreign governments who ignored the stance of the NIA nations, notably Mexico and the Soviet Union. While the Loyalists would most certainly have been defeated long before 1939 without the support of Stalinist Russia, the cost of this aid was high. Besides Spanish gold reserves that were sent as partial payment for military equipment, the drive by the Communists to control the Republican war effort further disrupted the already fragile unity of loyalist forces. While there is no indication of the artist on this poster, some scholars attribute it to Augusto. There is little known about this artist, who seems to have done most of his work on posters for the Junta de Defensa de Madrid . The poster was printed between November 4, 1936 and May 17, 1937, the period during which the issuing entity, the Ministerio de Propaganda, was in existence.

American novelist, essayist, playwright, short story writer, and juvenile book writer, whose works reflects socialistic views. Sinclair stated in 1903 that "My Cause is the Cause of a man who has never yet been defeated, and whose whole being is one all devouring, God-given holy purpose" . Among Sinclair's most famous books is THE JUNGLE (1906), to which the public reacted so violently that it launched a government investigation into the meatpacking plants of Chicago, and changed the food laws of America. Today his work is not widely read, mostly because writers with political and social ideals are not popular in the West - or East. "The line of the buildings stood clear-cut and black against the sky; here and there out of the mass rose the great chimneys, with the river of smoke streaming away to the end of the world. It was a study in colours now, this smoke; in the sunset light it was black and brown and grey and purple. All the sordid questions of the place were gone - in the twilight it was a vision of power. To the two who stood watching while the darkness swallowed it up, it seemed a dream of wonder, with its tale of human energy, of things being done, of employment for thousands upon thousands of men, of opportunity and freedom, of life and love and joy. When they came away, arm in arm, Jurgis was saying, 'Tomorrow I shall go there and get a job!'"
