"During the Civil War, the process of taking photographs was complex and time-consuming. Two photographers would arrive at a location. One would mix chemicals and pour them on a clean glass plate. After the chemicals were given time to evaporate, the glass plate would be sensitized by being immersed in darkness in a bath solution. Placed in a holder, the plate would then be inserted in the camera, which had been positioned and focused by the other photographer. Exposure of the plate and development of the photograph had to be completed within minutes; then the exposed plate was rushed to the darkroom wagon for developing. Each fragile glass plate had to be treated with great care after development a difficult task on a battlefield." ...Library of Congress Photographer's wagon and tent 500+ Civil War Envelopes Over 500+ High-Resolution Photographs of Civil War Propaganda Envelopes!

    SHERIDAN, PHILIP HENRY
performance (2nd of May 1775) of Lawrence Clinch, who had succeeded as Sir Lucius. In November 1775, with the assistance of his father-in-law, he produced the comic opera of The Duenna, which was played 75 times at Covent Garden during that season. Sheridan now began to negotiate with Garrick for the purchase of his share of Drury Lane, and the bargain was completed in June 1776. The sum paid by Sheridan and his partners, Thomas Lmn.ley and Dr Ford, for the half-share was £35,coo; of this Sheridan contributed £10,000. The money was raised on mortgage, Sheridan contributing only f 1300 in cash.i Two years afterwards Sheridan and his friends bought the other half of the property for £35,000. Sheridan’s farce, The Critic, was produced on the 29th of October 1779, The School for Scandal meantime continuing to draw larger houses than any other play every time it was put on the stage. In The Critic the laughable infirmities of all classes connected with the stage—authors, - actors, patrons and audience—are touched ~ff with the lightest of hands; the fun is directed, not at individuals, but at absurdities that grow out of the circumstances of the stage as naturally and inevitably as weeds in a garden. It seems that he had accumulated notes for another comedy to be called Affectation, but his only dramatic composition during the remaining thirty-six years of his life was Pizarro, produced in 1799—a tragedy in which he made liberal use of some of the arts ridiculed in the person of Mr Puff. He also revised for the stage Benjamin Thompson’s translation, The Stranger, of Kotzebue’s Menschenhass und Reue.

While on his rise in the Union army, Phillp Henry Sheridan earned the enmity of many Virginians for laying waste to the Shenandoah Valley. His date of birth and brithplace is uncertain, but he claimed to be from New York in 1831. Even though he was destined to become a Union soldier with one of the greatset reputations among the victors, his military career was put on hault due to the length of time he spent graduating from West Point in 1853 (5 years). it took this long because of a confrontation with fellow cadet and future Union general, William R. Terill. After serving in a staff position during the early part of the Civil War, he was recommended for the command of a cavalry regiment by Gordon Granger. Within days of taking command he was in charge of the brigade with which he earned his first star at Booneville in northern Mississippi. In the late summer of 1862, he was given a division in Kentucky and middle Tennessee. He fought well at Perryville and Murfreesboroand was given a sencond star in the volunteers to date from the latter. At Chickamungua his his division, along with almost two-thirds of the army, was swept from the feild. However, at Chattanoga, he regained his somewhat tarnished reputation when his division broke throught the rebel lines atop Missionary Ridge. There was some questions of who, if anyone, had ordered the troops all the way to the crest. His division made a limit persuit. When Grant went to East , he placed Sheridan in command of the Army of the Potomac's mounted arm. Against J.E.B. Stewart's depleted horse man, Sheridan met with mixed success in the Overland Campaigne but did manage to mortally wound the Confederate calvarman at Yellow Tavern. His purpose were thwarted at Haw's Shop and Trevilian Station. His Irish temperment brought into conflict with generals Mead and Warren and Duffie and Stephenson.

    Philip Henry Sheridan
At the beginning of the war, Philip Sheridan served in Missouri as a quartermaster, a post he disliked. But with his appointment as colonel of the Second Michigan Cavalry in May 1862, Sheridan began a series of important victories that proved his daring in battle, leading Lincoln to observe, "This Sheridan is a little Irishman, but he is a big fighter." In the summer of 1864, Sheridan oversaw the ruthless destruction of the Shenandoah Valley, eliminating the Confederate army's major source of food and supplies. That fall, General Sheridan rode more than twenty miles to rally his troops to victory after a surprise enemy attack, a courageous feat that became the subject of many patriotic prints and paintings. Brady photographed Sheridan in 1864, around the time he assumed command of the cavalry for the Army of the Potomac. Mathew Brady Studio
