Shaw, Anna Howard
Anna Howard Shaw Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; neg. no. LC USZ 62 20177 (1847-1919), clergyman, physician, and suffragist Born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, on February 14, 1847, Anna Shaw was brought to the United States in 1851. She grew up from 1859 on an isolated frontier farm near Big Rapids, Michigan. Her father's absence, her mother's nervous breakdown, and her elder brother's illness forced 12-year-old Anna to undertake the tasks of clearing the land, planting crops, finishing the poor cabin, and caring for the family. She received a year or two of schooling, which she supplemented with reading on her own, and at age 15 she became a teacher in a frontier schoolhouse. At the end of the Civil War she moved to the home of a married sister in Big Rapids and enrolled in the local high school. Shaw became active in the Methodist church, preached her first sermon in 1870, and was licensed to preach in 1871. In 1873 she entered Albion (Michigan) College, where she worked her way through two years of studies, and in 1878 she graduated from the divinity school of Boston University, the only woman in her class. She then took charge of a church in East Dennis, Massachusetts, but her application for ordination (her license did not permit her to administer sacraments) was refused because of her sex first by the New England Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and then by the General Conference, which took the further step of revoking her license. Finally, in 1880, she was ordained as the first woman minister of the Methodist Protestant Church. While ministering to her East Dennis congregation and also to a nearby Congregational meeting, she undertook medical studies at Boston University, earning her M.D. in 1886.

Biography of Suffragists
SUSAN B. ANTHONY (1820-1906)
For over fifty years Susan B. Anthony was the leader of the American woman suffrage movement. Born in Adams, Massachusetts on February 15, 1820, Anthony lived for many years in Rochester. When she died in 1906 only four states allowed women to vote, but Anthony's single-minded dedication to the cause of suffrage was largely responsible for the passage of the nineteenth amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920 giving women the vote. In 1872 Anthony was arrested for voting
ALICE STONE BLACKWELL (1857-1950)
After graduating from Boston University in 1881, Alice Stone Blackwell, the daughter of Lucy Stone and Henry Blackwell, began working on her parents' newspaper, The Women's Journal. She served as editor of the paper for the next thirty-five years. Blackwell was instrumental in bringing about a reconciliation between the two factions of the woman's suffrage movement in 1890 and served as the recording secretary of the new organization for many years. Besides her efforts for women's rights, Blackwell was also very active in the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Women's Trade Union League, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the American Peace Society.
ANTOINETTE BROWN BLACKWELL (1825-1921)
Born in Henrietta, New York, Antoinette Brown Blackwell received a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1847 and then, much to the consternation of the college, applied to study theology. Although she finished the requirements for the program in 1850, Oberlin did not allow her to graduate. Undeterred, she was ordained in 1853 as minister of the First Congregational Church in Butler and Savannah, Wayne County, New York, and thus became the first ordained woman minister of a recognized denomination in the United States.

When Desiderius conquered part of the papal lands and attempted to force Pope Adrian I Widukind , lasted from 772 until 804. By dint of forced conversions, wholesale massacres, and the transportation of thousands of Saxons to the interior of the Frankish kingdom, Charlemagne made his domination over Saxony complete. In 788 he annexed the semi-independent duchy of Bavaria, after deposing its duke, Tassilo. He also warred successfully against the Avars and the Slavs, establishing a frontier south of the Danube.

Anna Howard Shaw
Anna Howard Shaw was one of the first women given a license to preach in the Methodist Episcopal church. Her lifetime accomplishments include not only her work in religion, but in the fields of women's rights, medicine, and public speaking, which resulted in her fame worldwide. While serving in East Dennis, Massachusetts in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Anna continued her education and earned a medical degree from Boston University. When she was thirty-nine years old she branched out from the field of pastoral and healing ministries to speak out for social justice concerns, organizing and lecturing throughout the world for the causes such as temperance, peace, and women's rights. During her lifetime she gave more than 10,000 lectures worldwide.
