A VOICE FROM THE WILDERNESS:
THE STORY OF ANNA HOWARD SHAW
by Don Brown READ MORE OR ORDER@AMAZON By the time Anna Howard Shaw was barely twelve years old, she had crossed the stormy Atlantic (one and a half times), survived a grueling journey from Massachusetts to the unexplored woods of Michigan, and helped create a house and home in the middle of nowhere. By most measures, Anna Howard Shaw's life was hard and filled with struggle. But a life in the North American wilderness also had many pleasures. Anna was young, happy, and strong. What Anna didn't have was school. With incredible fortitude and purpose, not only did Anna go on to teach school herself, she also accomplished a great many other things, including helping to win the right to vote for women. With his magical storytelling and radiant artwork, Don Brown welcomes us into the pioneer life of a most extraordinary woman. Houghton Mifflin Company
ANNA HOWARD SHAW (1847-1919) Anna Howard Shaw, born February 14, 1847, immigrated with her family from England in 1851 settling in Lawrence, Massachusetts. In 1859, her father, believing they would experience a better life in the West, established a homestead in Michigan where their closet neighbor was six miles away; the post office, forty miles; and the railroad, one hundred miles.

Rev. Shaw. was licensed as a Methodist preacher in 1871, leaving the Methodist Episcopal Church because of prejudice and bigotry, she was ordained as the first woman minister in the Methodist Protestant Church in 1880.
She studied medicine but in face of more prejudices, she became convinced that woman's suffrage was the most important work for her.
A brilliant speaker, she traveled widely, perhaps only second to Susan B. Anthony. As Susan B. said, Anna Howard Shaw did the work in the movement for 20 years that no one else wanted to do.

Anthony was the leader of the American woman suffrage movement. Born in Adams, Massachusetts on February 15, 1820, Anthony lived for many years in Rochester. When she died in 1906 only four states allowed women to vote, but Anthony's single-minded dedication to the cause of suffrage was largely responsible for the passage of the nineteenth amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920 giving women the vote. In 1872 Anthony was arrested for voting. ALICE STONE BLACKWELL After graduating from Boston University in 1881, Alice Stone Blackwell, the daughter of Lucy Stone and Henry Blackwell, began working on her parents' newspaper, The Women's Journal. She served as editor of the paper for the next thirty-five years. Blackwell was instrumental in bringing about a reconciliation between the two factions of the woman's suffrage movement in 1890 and served as the recording secretary of the new organization for many years. Besides her efforts for women's rights, Blackwell was also very active in the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Women's Trade Union League, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the American Peace Society. ANTOINETTE BROWN BLACKWELL Born in Henrietta, New York, Antoinette Brown Blackwell received a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1847 and then, much to the consternation of the college, applied to study theology. Although she finished the requirements for the program in 1850, Oberlin did not allow her to graduate. Undeterred, she was ordained in 1853 as minister of the First Congregational Church in Butler and Savannah, Wayne County, New York, and thus became the first ordained woman minister of a recognized denomination in the United States.

Anna Howard Shaw week will be celebrated here March 13-17 as part of Women's History Month. Albion will commemorate one of the pioneers of the women's movement and an Albion alumna by devoting a week to "Women, Science and Technology." Suffragist Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919) grew up in Big Rapids and went on to attend Albion College. At Albion, Shaw was a member of one of three literary societies. One was composed entirely of men, another of women, and the third of both. A representative of the mixed gender society, attempting to recruit her, said, "Women need to be associated with men because they don't know how to manage meetings." To this Shaw replied, "If they don't, it's high time they learned." After that, she joined the all female literary society. Shaw went on to become a minister, physician and prominent orator. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the United States Congress for her humanitarian work during World War I. Her most prominent role in history, however, was that in the suffrage movement. Shaw was a member of the National Women's Suffrage Association which was headed by Susan B. Anthony. Upon Anthony's death, Shaw replaced her as president of the association.

Jane Addams
Clara Barton Mary McLeod Bethune Dorethea Lynde Dix ... Anna Howard Shaw Jane Addams
Social worker and peace activist

Addams worked to abolish child labor, to establish juvenile courts, and to limit women's working hours to eight hours per day. She is probably best known as the founder of "Hull House" in Chicago in 1889, a community center whose purpose was to improve conditions for poor immigrants. The center offered English language classes, childcare, health education, and recreational opportunities. Addams won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Clara Barton
Pioneering nurse and humanitarian

Although best known as the founder of the American Red Cross, Barton first made her mark during the Civil War. She solicited for supplies (food and medical) to help take care of Union soldiers. Barton didn't stop thereshe took the donated supplies to the battlegrounds. She also helped document the 22,000 men killed or missing in action so their families could be notified. She headed the American Red Cross from its founding in 1881 until 1904. top Mary McLeod Bethune
Educator and community leader

Bethune taught in several southern mission schools before settling in Florida and founding the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls in 1904. The school later (1923) merged with Cookman Institute and became Bethune-Cookman College. She founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935 and served as special adviser on minority affairs to President Franklin Roosevelt.

"Just think of the men along your street. If a human being or a god could conceive of a worse hell than being a wife of any one of them I would like to know what it could be."
Shaw to a friend considering marriage Anna Howard Shaw Start Prev Next End Rev. Anna Howard Shaw, admired as "the ideal type of reformer" while her fellow suffragists were described as grim, spent most of her life advocating for the right of women to vote. In her private hours, Shaw preferred a more "masculine" style, but she was able to successfully use her feminine wiles in her public life. Early on, someone snidely remarked on the short length of her hair, to which Shaw boldly replied: "I will admit frankly that it is a birthmark. I was born with short hair." Though she grew her hair long and styled it in a bun, her hair wasn't the only "lesbian" aspect of her life brought before the public. She and life partner, Lucy Anthony, Susan B. Anthony's niece, entertained a number of like-minded suffragists at their seaside summer home. The New York World got wind that these women did not conform to conventional bathing attire at these gatherings and ran bold headlines like: "An Adamless Eden of Women in Bloomers" and "Summer Suffragists Who Discard Skirts and Wear Bathing Suits Just Like a Man." Accompanying the sensational piece was a drawing of Shaw in a skirt looking at her friends in pants.

Hall of Fame inducts Bishop Kelly, 3 other Methodist women Oct. 30, 2000 News media contact: Linda Bloom New York NOTE: A photograph of Bishop Leontine Kelly is available with this report. By United Methodist News Service When retired United Methodist Bishop Leontine Kelly was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in October, she was overwhelmed both by the honor and her fellow honorees. During the ceremony, she sat next to the niece of the late Anna Howard Shaw, the first woman to be ordained by the Methodist Protestant Church, and was thrilled to meet U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, whom she considers to be a "humble" woman of great faith. Later, as she walked through the Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, N.Y., Kelly said she just had to reach out and touch the photographs of those she admired, such as Barbara Jordan, the late Congresswoman, and Mary McLeod Bethune, the educator. They are among the 176 women, including the class of 2000, who are now part of the hall. Kelly holds the distinction of being the first African-American woman to be elected bishop by any major religious denomination. Along with Reno and Shaw, she was among the 19 distinguished American women inducted this year. Another Methodist woman of history, Frances Willard, was inducted, along with Ida Tarbell, a graduate of United Methodist-related Allegheny College in Pennsylvania.
