(SFEC,12/797, p.T4) c140AD Emperor Antoninus Pius ordered Hadrian's Wall to be abandoned and a more northerly defense to be established. Remnants could later be seen of the Antonine Wall around Falkirk, Scotland. Roman troops advanced northwards into the Scottish lowlands, driving the barbarians back before them and establishing a new frontier called the Antonine Wall, named for the new Emperor, Antoninus Pius. The Antonine Wall was later abandoned, reoccupied, and abandoned a second and final time under the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. (NG, 12/97, forum)(HNQ, 9/9/00)

SHARP ON CELTICISM
"Fiona MacLeod" (William Sharp) 1855 - 1905
Return to Dr Irvine's Pharais lecture
From Dedicatory Letter to Pharais
The most nature-wrought of the English poets hoped he was not too late in transmuting into his own verse something of the beautiful mythology of Greece. But while Keats spun from the inexhaustible loom of his own genius, and I am an obscure chronicler of obscure things, is it too presumptuous of me to hope that here, and mayhap elsewhere, I, the latest comer among older and worthier celebrants and co-enthusiasts, likewise may do something, however little, to win a further measure of heed for, and more intimate sympathy with, that old charm and stellar beauty of Celtic thought and imagination, now, alas, like so many other lovely things, growing more and more remote, discoverable seldom in books and elusive amid the sayings and oral legends and fragmentary songs of a passing race? Fiona Macleod , Scottish poet and man of letters. Under his own name he wrote literary biographies; poems, including the volume Earth's Voices (1884); and novels, notably Silence Farm (1899). With his wife he compiled the anthology Lyra Celtica (1896). Under the name Fiona Macleod, supposedly a talented Celtic lady, Sharp wrote his best novels and poems, including Pharais The Mountain Lovers (1895), and The Washer of the Ford (1896), as well as two plays, The House of Usna (1903) and The Immortal Hour (1908). Delicate and romantic, these works treat life in Scotland, evoking a haunting, almost supernatural atmosphere.

Last updated 6 Sep 2002 Fiona ) is a given name that was invented in the 19th century by Scottish author William Sharp (1855-1905), who used it for his pen-name, Fiona Macleod . The name did not exist, and so could not have been used, previous to this. While it is very popular in modern Scotland, it is not a medieval name. Sharp presumably intended Fiona to be a name based on the modern Gaelic word fionn -a to that adjective. One of these historical colour based names is Early Gaelic Finn Fionn Although it was sometimes possible in medieval Gaelic to form a feminine name from a masculine name, this was not done by adding an -a to the masculine name, but rather by using the Early Gaelic feminine suffixes -nat and -sech (which later became -nait and -seach ). This was done with Finn , creating Early Gaelic Finnat Finnsech loch and German ach ). The later forms are Fionnait Fionnseach There are a number of other feminine Gaelic given names that are formed with Finn- , including Early Gaelic Finnguala Finnmaith Finnabair , and . However, none of them could have given rise to a medieval
