Updated June 1, 2002 This was supplied by Edward Ronnie . Many thanks. Here's a copy of a dedication or rather rededication written in the fly leaf of my copy of the 'Trail of 98' to Miss Hain(e)y on her engagement to Royal R Brown. Below the picture is a
a typed version of the same as it is not easy to read even in the original.
Dear Miss Hainey
And as you go through life remember ‘Nellie’
‘god’ would not reveal to you the great reality of love, only to plunge you into darkness – ‘true love cannot be in vain. So read this book a chapter of my own life – the last two chapters were written by ‘your(s) Royal’
Robert W. Service
The Author
‘Nellie’
‘The Author’ While staying at the Ansonia Hotel in New York City Mr. Service drafted on nine pages of the hotel stationary his poem, The Faceless Man . It is written in pencil. Here are two of the pages: The stationary is clearly old and I am not sure the Hotel Ansonia is still in existence. Comparing the version of the poem that is posted on this website with the draft we have, there are some sentence structure changes. The only word he changed was in the eighth stanza, eighth line. The word in our draft is "hideous", and in the published version the word is "piteous". The rest of the poem is word for word.

53. Poem Fighting Mac
The echo of his deeds is ringing yet. Will ring for aye. All else . . .let us forget. Robert W. Service. Britishborn Canadian Poet 1874-1958.
http://pw1.netcom.com/~reincke/poem.html
"Fighting Mac" A Life Tragedy A pistol shot rings round and round the world; In pitiful defeat a warrior lies. A last defiance to dark Death is hurled, A last wild challenge shocks the sunlit skies. Alone he falls, with wide, wan, woeful eyes: Eyes that could smile at deathcould not face shame. Alone, alone he paced his narrow room, In the bright sunshine of that Paris day; Saw in his thought the awful hand of doom; Saw in his dream his glory pass away; Tried in his heart, his weary heart, to pray: "O God! who made me, give me strength to face The spectre of this bitter, black disgrace." The burn brawls darkly down the shaggy glen; The bee-kissed heather blooms around the door; He sees himself a barefoot boy again, Bending o'er page of legendary lore. He hears the pibroch, grips the red claymore, Runs with the Fiery Cross, a clansman true, Sworn kinsman of Rob Roy and Roderick Dhu. Eating his heart out with a wild desire, One day, behind his counter trim and neat, He hears a sound that sets his brain afire The Highlanders are marching down the street.

The Spoilers (1942)
The Spoilers was the fourth of five film versions made from Rex Beach’s classic 1905 saga of Alaska. The earlier film versions were 1914, 1923, 1930, and a fifth version was made in 1955. This version was tailored especially for Marlene Dietrich and was the first time in the story’s history that a female star was top-billed.
After Marlene’s seven-film association with Josef von Sternberg ended in 1935, she made Desire , a big success, The Garden of Allah, Knight Without Armor , and Angel , none of which were successes. Now that von Sternberg’s handling of her could no longer be blamed, she bore the brunt of critics’ and theater managers’ anger. A trade paper published a notorious red-bordered advertisement labeling Marlene as box-office poison and Paramount paid her the contractual sum of $200,000 not to make a film she had been signed for. Marlene was so disappointed by the critics’ whining about Angel that she stayed away from the U.S. for almost 2 years, spending her time drifting around Europe. Just before war broke out, she received a film proposal that was to restore her fortunes dramatically. Joe Pasternak, who had met Marlene before she left for Hollywood in 1930 proposed that she do a Hollywood Western. The idea was shrewder than it first sounded. A Western saloon bar in the 1880s had much in common with a Berlin cabaret in the 1920s: a brash, bawdy milieu, an exuberantly bullying madam figure able to meet the other sex on its own terms, and a vigorous insistence on making one’s own rules and breaking conventional standards—all of which Marlene was perfectly familiar from her own early days as a Berlin soubrette.
