  • 1 The Project 2 Discussion This document reports on a site visit to the Margaret Sanger Papers, made in August 1995, under the auspices of the Model Editions Partnership, a project funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission with the goal of developing conceptual models for electronic historical editions, and samples illustrating those models. The visit (or perhaps visitation) was made by David Chesnutt, Susan Hockey, and the author; our hosts at the Sanger Papers were Esther Katz, Cathy Moran Hajo, and Peter Engelman. This report first gives a brief general description of the scope and current status of the Sanger Papers project, then reorders and summarizes the main points of the discussions held during the site visit. The author expresses his thanks to the editors of the Sanger Papers and to David Chesnutt and Susan Hockey, for their corrections to this site visit report, without which this report would have even more errors than it does now.
    1 The Project
The Margaret Sanger Papers reproduce in microfilm the papers of Margaret Sanger (1879-1966), a pioneer in family planning and birth control counseling. The microfilm edition includes a good deal of authority work, and provides item-level targets identifying each document; these features distinguish it from many preservation microfilm projects, since rules for preservation microfilm require neither.

  • Human life has absolute value. Money should never be placed before life. The abortion industry is a business; women are the consumers. Money-making is the goal of the industry. Discuss the devastating effects of legalized abortion on society. Who are the victims? Everyone. Women are left with post-abortion trauma , and society becomes callous to violence as a result.
One thing all abortionists agree on - abortion is a lucrative business. Margaret Sanger 1879-1966 - Founder and Hero of Planned Parenthood The founder of Planned Parenthood remains a controversial figure, even decades after her death. Some quotes from Margaret Sanger: Margaret Sanger was a major figure in changing American attitudes about abortion and population control. In 1916, she founded the Brownsville, NY clinic; PPFA dates its founding from this clinic. Sanger found the American Birth Control League and publishes the journal The Birth Control Review , Sanger found the Clinical Research Bureau in Manhattan From 1931-1936 Sanger was involved with National Committee for Federal Legislation for Birth Control , based in Wash.. DC.

A-110 ALMA LUTZ, 1890-1973 Collection, 1775-1943, n.y., n.d. 1 file box, 1 folio folder Reprocessed: January 1986 Accession numbers: 55-82, 56-89, 370, 430, 1164, By: Bert Hartry 70-12, 70-61 The papers in this collection were purchased by Alma Lutz and given to the Schlesinger Library in 1955, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1967, and 1970. The collection was reprocessed and microfilmed with the support of the Friends of the Schlesinger Library. BIOGRAPHY Alma Lutz became involved in the woman's suffrage movement when she returned home to North Dakota after graduating from Vassar College (1912). She continued to work for equal rights for women all her life and was the author of many articles and books, including Created Equal: A Biography of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony. AL was an active member of the National Woman's Party, the Massachusetts Committee for the Equal Rights Amendment, and many other organizations. During 1951-73 she served on the Advisory Committee of the Schlesinger Library. For additional biographical information, see MC 182, the Alma Lutz papers in the Schlesinger Library, and the AL biography file; see also Who Was Who in America (1974-76). SCOPE AND CONTENT This collection consists of letters, and a few other items, purchased by AL and reflects her interest in women in American history, particularly those active in the abolition and suffrage movements. The items in the collection are arranged alphabetically by writer, and chronologically when there is more than one item by the same writer. The inventory names the recipient of each letter, when known, and the index that follows the inventory includes the names of all recipients. In the inventory each letter except short notes, fragments valuable only as autographs, and items with trivial contents is described as follows: name or title of recipient, date, topics discussed. Letters of one or more pages with either the salutation or the signature missing have been listed as fragments. Dates and/or other information have been written on some items by persons unknown; some dates and other information have been supplied by researchers. In organizing the material the processor accepted and used this information. Everything added by the processor is in square brackets, but some dates and other information in square brackets were previously added by persons unknown. The bulk of the letters are ALsS (autograph letters signed); only a few are TLsS (typed letters signed). There are typed transcripts of some of the letters; these were prepared by persons unknown. Corrections, some by persons unknown, others by the processor, appear on many of these transcripts. The researcher is cautioned that the transcripts are not always accurate. Three folders of papers that were in A-110 (#64, 69-70) have been moved to MC 182. This material (mainly Florence Kitchelt and Rose Arnold Powell correspondence re: Equal Rights Amendment, National Woman's Party, and Susan B. Anthony) derives from Alma Lutz's work with the National Woman's Party rather than her autograph collecting. Two portions of the collection were previously filmed and have not been refilmed with this collection. The Lydia Maria Child letters (#8-9) were filmed as part of the microfiche edition of her correspondence (Kraus Microform, 1980), available at many libraries; at the Schlesinger Library the call number is Mf-3. (The folder numbers on the Child fiches are those of the original A-110 inventory.) The Mary Grew diary (in #12) was filmed as part of the History of Women microfilm project (Research Publications, Inc., 1976); the call number at the Schlesinger Library is M-59, reel 973, no. M13. Additional catalog entries (a card for each of the following appears in the card catalog): Adams, Abigail (Smith), 1744-1818 Adams, Hannah, 1755-1831 Addams, Jane, 1860-1935 Alcott, Louisa May, 1832-1888 Authors' Guild of American Women Avery, Rachel (Foster), 1858-1919 Barton, Clara, 1821-1912 Beecher, Catharine Esther, 1800-1878 Blackwell, Alice Stone, 1857-1950 Blackwell, Antoinette (Brown), 1825-1921 Blackwell, Elizabeth, 1821-1910 Blackwell, Henry Browne, 1825-1909 Bowring, Sir John, 1792-1872 Catt, Carrie (Lane) Chapman, 1859-1947 Chapman, Maria (Weston), 1806-1885 Child, Lydia Maria (Francis), 1802-1880 Comstock, Ada Louise, 1876-1973 Crandall, Prudence, 1803-1890 Dall, Caroline Wells (Healey), 1822-1912 Dodge, Mary Abigail [pseud. Blank pages were not numbered. -All reels were proofread by the processor and corrections were made where necessary. These corrections may disrupt the sequence of frame numbers. -Some items in the collection were difficult to film due to such problems as flimsy paper with text showing through or faded or smudged writing. The film was carefully produced and proofread to insure that these items are as legible as possible. -There are some letters with the text on the two inside pages written in two different directions, and some letters that have the final lines of text and the signature on page one. In these cases letters were microfilmed as they appear; pages were not turned and first pages were not refilmed. REEL GUIDE For a list of the contents of A-110, see the inventory that follows. Margaret H. Sanger, 1879-1966
Founder of the American birth control
movement, Margaret H. Sanger fought for revision of archaic
legislation which prohibited publication of facts about
contraception. In her early career, Sanger practiced nursing
among the impoverished families of New York's lower east side.
There she became aware of the interrelationships between
overpopulation, high infant and maternal mortality rates,
and poverty. In 1914, Sanger began publishing material about
contraception. In Brooklyn, two years later, she opened the first
American birth control clinic. She served 30 days in the workhouse in 1917 for "maintaining a public nuisance, but this and other legal difficulties only served to garner public sympathy for her work. Sanger founded the American Birth Control League, serving as president for seven years. In 1927, she organized the first World Population Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, and was the first president of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

    http://www.library.csi.cuny.edu/dept/history/lavender/386/msanger.html
    Margaret Sanger 1879 - 1966
The founder of the birth-control movement in the United States
The founder of the birth-control movement in the United States was Margaret Sanger, a nurse who worked among the poor on the Lower East Side of New York City. There she witnessed firsthand the results of uncontrolled fertility, self-induced abortions, and high rates of infant and maternal mortality. Sanger claimed that, of all her experiences as a midwife and visiting nurse, the death of one of her clients from a self-induced abortion was the tramatic event that led her to focus all her energy on the single cause of reproductive autonomy for women. Sanger was born Margaret Louise Higgins in Corning, New York, on September 14, 1879. Margaret grew up in a very poor family of 11 children. She trained as a nurse at the White Plains Hospital and the Manhattan Eye and Ear Clinic in New York. She married William Sanger in 1902. Although she later divorced him she kept the last name by which she had become well known, even after she remarried in 1922. Sanger believed in a woman's right to plan the size of her family. Her work among the poor in N.Y. convinced her of the widespread need for information concerning contraception. She was outraged at the suppression of knowledge that women needed, whether their primary concern was the support of their families or the desire for greater personal freedom. Sanger's feelings of having been trapped by marriage, as well as her resentment of her mother's premature death, made the suffering of tenement mothers her own. There seemed to be no justice for these women, whose " weary misshapen bodies...were destined to be thrown on the scrap heap before they were thirty-five".

Margaret Sanger Her crusade to legalize birth control spurred the movement for women's liberation BY GLORIA STEINEM he movement she started will grow to be, a hundred years from now, the most influential of all time," predicted futurist and historian H.G. Wells in 1931. "When the history of our civilization is written, it will be a biological history, and Margaret Sanger will be its heroine." Though this prophecy of nearly 70 years ago credited one woman with the power that actually came from a wide and deep movement of women, no one person deserves it more. Now that reproductive freedom is becoming accepted and conservative groups are fighting to maintain control over women's bodies as the means of reproduction, Sanger's revolution may be even more controversial than during her 50-year career of national and international battles. Her experience can teach us many lessons. Page 2 Page 3 Page 4

THE MARGARET SANGER PAPERS Editor: Esther Katz, Margaret Sanger Papers Project, New York University . The Margaret Sanger Papers United States v. One Package, The staff of the Margaret Sanger Papers Project has located, intensively researched, arranged, and described some 53,000 documents related to Sanger in two series. Working with project director/editor Esther Katz on both series are assistant editors Peter C. Engelman and Cathy Moran Hajo. Assistant editor Anke Voss Hubbard worked with the editors on preparation of The Smith College Collections. Supplementing these two series are the approximately 60,000 Sanger documents microfilmed in 1977 by the Library of Congress. The Smith College Collections "The Margaret Sanger Papers at Smith College are an indispensable resource for understanding modern American political and social history. They constitute a personal and professional record of both rare intimacy and enormous scope. They illumine Sanger’s own life as a monument to the vision of freedom for women she embraced, while also providing a comprehensive chronicle of her exploits as a savvy and sophisticated advocate and organizer for birth control and women’s reproductive rights throughout the world. No one can fully understand the challenges that still confront the modern family planning movement without first consulting this exceptionally well-preserved and beautifully organized collection."
