You just have to keep walking, covering the distance everyday, trusting thatthe Rudder is set in the right Robert’s determined spirit is admirable.
http://www.dso.org.sg/Kinetic/Archive99-00/July_99/people/
A Life Less Ordinary "If you know where you are heading and you keep going in that direction, you will reach there one day."
Robert at Mt Cook Massif, New Zealand Day in, day out, for three months, six men will face the broad expanse of nature and nothingness in the South Pole. They have to cover about 10-15 km every day (about the distance from DSO to Westin Stamford), diligently pulling their sledge which is harnessed to their bodies, carrying their tents, food, clothes, communication equipment and their “livelihood”. “You just have to keep walking, covering the distance everyday, trusting that the rudder is set in the right direction and knowing that one day, you will reach the end point,” says Robert Goh, a DSO aeronautics engineer, who is reported by his primary school teacher to be the “naughty boy with an inquiring mind”. Robert is a climber of the Everest Expedition team and will be part of the six-man expedition to the Antarctica in mid-Oct 99. Robert’s determined spirit is admirable. If walking for 10-15 km everyday sounds easy to you, think twice. There is a drag force of 20-kg baggage, and there is no TCS/live entertainment in the “wilderness” only threading in harsh weather conditions. It is as good as facing the set of the same challenges everyday for three months, facing the white-filled landscape of the Antarctica occasionally spiced with the cold howling south wind. “This is the challenge of the coming Antarctica expedition, about nothingness and only memories and reflective thoughts to sustain your mind and sanity. It is physically demanding. Everyday, one can expect to lose 6000 calories, equivalent to 10 plates of chicken rice. We will be packing our daily diet with power bars and dried meat with high fat and high carbohydrates, even to the extent of drinking oil to recover those lost energy,” says Robert. The team now trains frequently in East Coast by dragging sand-filled tyres that weigh about 20 kg, and dragging them for about 3 hours, simulating the conditions of the expedition. As part of the preparation, they have done a “smaller-scale” training trip to Greenland in end April.

Back in the crew room it was very obvious that, although JEFTS is essentially a civilian organisation, it is run very much along military lines. Indeed, anyone observing the way the whole organisation is run might conclude that this was an operational RAF base. This logic must pay dividends for the students when they progress to an actual military posting.
As the weather was slowly beginning to improve I drew a parachute and other related kit from the personal equipment store before making my way back to the aircraft. The large canopy slides up and back, making entry to the cockpit quite easy, even when wearing a parachute and helmet. A five-point harness is fitted as standard, and although the rudder pedals adjust, the seats are fixed. Therefore, once I had adjusted the rudder pedals to my satisfaction, I strapped myself down securely and began to appraise the cockpit.
The primary flight instruments are all grouped in front of the student, with only a stand-by altimeter and artificial horizon in front of the instructor. The slightly small fuel contents, oil pressure and temperature gauges are also situated in front of the instructor. Following normal conventions, the radio stack is centrally located, with the transponder in front of the instructor.

Special to The Eagle Legendary Texas singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen often writes songs that delve into alcoholism, selfishness and murder, but fans know there is a softer side to Keen that has just as strong a presence in his music. But ... romantic?
So Keen agreed, warning that he had nothing like a green thumb. More like a black thumb.

Here we have the first release of the Albatros series of fighters from Roden. It is packaged in the usual soft “end opening” box, and displays an evocative picture of the machine flown by Prince Friedrich Carl of Prussia. Roden have supplied the 1/72nd scale modeller with a steady stream of kits over the last few years and thankfully it doesn’t look like letting up just yet. Judging by the kit number, this one had been planned for a while!
Contents The box contains five sprues of light gray coloured plastic. They are labeled as A, B, C, D and Z. The superb latter sprue we have seen before in Roden’s Fokker D.VII kits. All parts are fully molded and the minor flash is easily eradicated with a swipe of “wet and dry” paper. A decal sheet for five aircraft and a twelve-page instruction sheet complete the package. It is obvious from the engineering of the kit that many more variants are planned. Packaging has again taken its toll with a couple of pieces broken due to the sprues being allowed to fight each other in a common bag.

There is more joy for the fans of WWI aircraft as Roden continue the release of their range of Albatros fighters. This time it is the Austro-Hungarian aircraft fans that benefit with the emergence of the Albatros D.III Oeffag s.53.2 and s.153 types. The two kits share common sprue and the very clear instructions make sure you select the right item. The sprue are lettered A, C, E, F, and W. and we shall look at each one in turn. Each kit has a generous choice of markings with one of them portrayed in colour on the back of the box.

A/C #817 was #3 in lead element, lead squadron. Near 5410 N 0910 E the leader flew into a dense layer of clouds. The leader of the second element pulled up above the overcast and his wing men peeled off right and left. None of these crews saw the leading element again. Crews in the 100th B group flying in the combat wing behind turned back before entering the cloud bank. Most of the crews observed a large explosion behind them and slightly above the formation. altitude. It is believed that A/C 970 and A/C 817 collided and exploded and that A/C 017 which is missing was damaged by explosion. A VHF signal was received from A/C 017 a short time later saying that the pilot intended to try to reach Sweden. A somewhat clearer picture of events is given in a letter from Vollmer to John Miller (1980/81).

Peter Carpenter, Freeport, GBI, Bahamas

Peter’s vintage 1930s mahogany speedboat has a stepped hull and rounded chines and is obviously designed to carry a lot of “cargo”! It features plank-on-frame construction and uses twin Trinity P2k motors for power. The model carries between 5 and 10 NiMH cells for each motor! There’s no rudder; independent motor control provides both thrust and steering. The hull and deck are beautifully finished with fiberglass cloth and resin and six coats of glossy polyurethane.
Hatteras Sport Fisher
Robert Leafdale, Everett, WA

Named the “Christine Marie,” Robert’s entry is this impressive Hatteras 65-foot Sport Fisher. The model is handcrafted of birch and pine, and the tuna tower is made out of steel and aluminum. Inside the cabin are scale couches, countertops, seats and instruments. There’s a 12V lighting system inside and out, and it even has an AC converter inside for displaying the model at home or in the office. The model is powered by three, 12V, 7A motors controlled by an AstroFlight ESC, and at the ends of the shafts are 3.1-inch Prather props. An electric winch is used as a downrigger for fishing lures and bait. Yes, this is a real fishing boat, and Robert has used it at several local trout lakes!

Subject: May 22 - ABC's WORLD NEWS TONIGHT This morning I saw a brief ad for this evening's "World News Tonight" on ABC.
They will be doing a segment about "animals get new friends."
I believe the segment will be about legal rights for animals, and animals
rights people. The visual teaser was a screaming chimpanzee and a metal cage
door being slammed. That's all I was able to catch.
We'll have to follow up this evening and watch it.
Thank you. Linda Roberson Please enter your comment here.
