Many Died in the North
I n fact, a single Otter collided with an island not far from Resolute during my assignment there. The pilot became nothing more than a scorch mark on the side of a cliff and his death became a reminder that the work we did every day came with its own distinctive hazards.
During my early days at Resolute Bay, high-time pilots warned me that Ellesmere Island, the most northerly in the Arctic Archipelago, was sometimes unapproachable due to vicious weather. Polar winds funneled through Peary Channel and Massey Sound, and smashed against upthrusting mountains and downsloping glaciers. Steep-sided fjords and cliffs captured gales and twisted them into severe, metal-bending turbulence. In summer, for formed rapidly. In spring and winter, continual white-out conditions reigned. Pilots who knew the island avoided Ellesmere when they could, but exploration camps and research parties working there needed their support.
With grocery boxes crammed to the ceiling, I left the comfort of Resolute in clear weather. Unlimited skies and visibility lasted until Bear Bay, a small pocket of Devon Island where it angled to form the Grinnell Peninsula. The Beaver did well until 8,000 feet, when thin air caused it to run out of throttle.

Renovation of S/S Robert August 2002 - part 1
The work with the gunwale-moulding started this winter. We chose to use a 60 x 60 mm angle bar together with two round 12 mm ironbars beneath. Two gates were planned in the after and two more ahead just beside the cabin. The reason for choosing such a thick bar for the moulding was to give Robert a look of rugged construction. We also wanted the gunwale to be able to resist rough handling. The question was only how to bend the moulding to its proper curving. It proved to be easier said than done. First of all we tried to bend the bar with brutal hand power without being successfull at all. Even with a lengthened crank it was almost impossible to turn the roller. In the picture Malin stands wondering whether or not to give it another try. On top of it all the bar was bent in two directions simultaneously. We soon gave up and started to make a templet instead. The bars were welded together in pairs and taken to a nearby workshop. Bente in the workshop helped us out. Here he is measuring the diameter of the aft gunwale-moulding.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

"With dedication, energy, and great skill, Cathy Rudder has served the APSA for 20 years," said APSA President Robert Jervis. "She has strengthened both the organization and the political science discipline. Presidents could always turn to her for sage advice and the entire organization has benefitted from her appreciation of the our multiple values and needs. But perhaps the most importantand most accurate comment is that she has helped us to build an organization so sound that it can weather her departure." Under her leadership the association has experienced tremendous growth, with membership increasing to nearly 13,000 and APSA's endowments reaching $22 million. She has overseen two major endowment drives, one that has fully endowed APSA's Congressional Fellowship Program and a second that will make possible the establishment of a Centennial Center for Political Science in Washington. Seeking to prepare a new generation of political scientists she has advanced APSA efforts to assist and welcome graduate students and promoted diversity in the profession by helping create the Minority Identification Project and supporting growth of the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute.

Inleiding
