Roth and his new puttter, ready to defend T of C victory
by Kelly Hill Flint Golf Club pro Jeff Roth has a reputation for being one of the best putters in the Michigan Section, so when he claims to be making more putts than ever and is having more fun doing it, it could mean a long summer for the those trying to catch the 1999 Player of the Year. Roth, 42, who won last year's Tournament of Champions at Boyne Mountain, by three strokes over '99 Michigan Open champion Scott Hebert and six strokes over amateur Randy Lewis, spent last winter experimenting with the SeeMore putter, the club with an optical alignment feature that Payne Stewart used in winning his U.S. Open championship. "I have made more putts than before, but the thing that I have really noticed about this putter is that my misses are better," said Roth, who also noted that he played more golf this spring than in recent years. "I have struggled with my alignment the last few years and my tee-to-green game has carried me the last four or five years. I know people think I'm a good putter, but nobody hits the greens that I do. My putting stigma goes back so far, all the way back to my days as a junior. To win the tournaments that I've won though, you've got to hit greens." The 1987, '96, '98 and '99 Player of the Year and the 1993 National Club Pro champion, Roth won last year's Tournament of Champions, Michigan PGA Championship and the state's Pro-Am and Pro-Pro championships. He also finished 33rd in the Buick Open.

    Gorgons, Tornadoes, and Plasmoid Phenomena A few years ago, I found a wonderful book(1) that was written by Egon Bach about phenomena from volcanoes, vents, and even just the plain flat earth surface that he calls gorgons, after the ancient Greek name for god-monsters from volcanoes. He seems to have worked for many years to collect evidence and formulate his ideas. My plasmoid ideas are not much like his ideas though. Gorgons are a type of plasmoid. By learning about these plasmoids, one can learn about other types such as those produced in apparatus. I want to introduce this book and explain how these phenomena are identical to plasmoids and tornadoes since they behave like other plasmoids and even interconvert to them, and show application to understanding the "cold fusion" phenomena. Like tornadoes(7), some gorgons have been seen to be cylinders composed of disks stacked upon each other, and people have seen such sheer apart into many flying disks (p. 166). Recently, a video of a "white cylinder" that was a half mile long traveling very fast about 75000 feet over Colorado and that was apparently also photographed in another state a little later was featured on Paranormal Borderlines(8). It was luminous and rapidly exhibited a variety of changing colors and seems to have been layered or somewhat segmented. The object was videotaped very recently, perhaps a month ago. E. Bach reports information about other pictures or studies of similar objects. There actually are many reports of gorgons spouting out tornado-like funnels or funnels joining together with a gorgon. Large gorgons may convert to tornadoes (p. 71).

    Chapter Eighteen
    Hope
    Aim at Heaven and you will get earth “thrown in”, aim at earth and you will get neither. C.S. Lewis Mere Christianity Do you need to be a saint to have hope in this world? Sometimes it seems so. Hope is, in the words of American philosophy professor Peter Kreeft , the “forgotten virtue in our time, for hope means hope for Heaven, and modernity’s nose-to-the-grindstone this-worldliness dares not lift its eyes to the open skies”. Hope is one of the three spiritual virtues; the other two are faith and love. It refers to the Christian hope of a better life to come in the next world. For the Christian it is more a case of expectation than of actual hope. Unable to prove the existence of a heaven, the Christian nevertheless confidently expects to end up there. And this faith finds expression in the response to God’s promises. As C.S. Lewis has commented, the Christians who have done most for this world have been those who thought most about the next. He cited the case of the English evangelicals who abolished the slave-trade, and commented acerbically: “It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this.”

    Chief Judge COX delivered the opinion of the Court. In this case, we are called upon to decide if the "military judge abused her discretion by refusing to allow appellant to offer a sentencing witness in rebuttal" to the Government's evidence in aggravation. We conclude that she did, and we reverse.

    RECENT DEVELOPMENTS March/April, 1998 - Vol. 3, No. 2 THE ROTH IRA Part One: A Roth IRA Primer By Phillip S. Stenger, Esq., and David A. Tutas, Esq. What Is A Roth IRA? The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (the "1997 Act") was applauded by many taxpayers for its reduction in the capital gains rate. Perhaps as significant as the reduction in capital gains rate is the introduction of the Roth IRA. In this first part of our series on the Roth IRA, we will examine the general provisions of Roth IRAs. In future articles we will explore planning opportunities with Roth IRAs. Prior to the 1997 Act, there was only one type of Individual Retirement Account ("IRA"). The standard IRA has the following characteristics:
    • Contributions must be made from W-2 or self-employment income; Generally the taxpayer can deduct up to $2,000 per year ($4,000 for married taxpayers filing joint returns provided both spouses have earned income); Earnings on the money in the IRA are tax deferred as long as the money remains in the IRA; Earnings on contributions are includible in gross income when distributed;

    Ask Aristotle about Dr Julian Lewis

    Andrew Roth
    Monday March 19, 2001
    To everyone's surprise, the parliamentary career of scholarly, eccentric Dr Julian Lewis has been outstripped by his streetfighter friend John Bercow, now deputy to Ann Widdecombe as Conservative spokesman for the Home Office. Mr Lewis and Mr Bercow shared the helicopter which enabled them on the same day to be selected for safe Tory seats: New Forest East and Buckingham and both were elected for the first time in 1997. Dr Lewis was thought better qualified for a front rank career, as the respected, even feared, former deputy director of the Conservative research department who resigned in 1996 because the Major government had been inadequately opposed to the single currency.
