Roth Forest Endowment Biographical Sketch Dr. Lewis Roth earned his bachelor degree in botany form Miami University of Ohio in 1936, and the doctorate in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1940. He began his career at Oregon State University in 1940, with five years' time out for service in World War II and a year for post doctoral work at Harvard in 1947. Dr. Roth worked closely with the College of Forestry and forestry agencies throughout his career. Since his retirement in 1979, he continued for some time to consult and do research on forest diseases. Evelyn "Lyn Roth grew up in Indiana and completed a masters degree in Teacher Training at Purdue University. She took a position at Oregon State University in 1941 to train teachers of the Corvallis School District. After a brief period at the University of Wyoming she returned to Oregon as assistant supervisor in the state's Division of Vocational Education in Salem. Lyn and Lewis married in 1945. They moved to Wyoming for one year then returned to Corvallis in 1946 where they raised two daughters. Most summers were spent in the field carrying out research on forest diseases.

SINCLAIR LEWIS: REBEL FROM MAIN STREET
By Richard Lingeman
Several years ago a totally unknown novelist from the mid-West wrote an essay in Harper’s asking whatever happened to the "big social novel" in America. It is a question that comes up quite a lot in literary circles, usually in relation to the larger question of what constitutes realism in fiction. Many of the world’s most celebrated authors in the late twentieth century - Marquez, Grass, DeLillo, Murakami - have written big social novels, but they tend toward "magic realism" and the paranoid, fantastic, and supernatural. Their work seems not quite of the world. Is it realism? The author of the Harper’s piece (yes, that was Jonathan Franzen pre-plugging The Corrections ) quotes Philip Roth’s complaint, made in the 1960s, that in America reality has surpassed fiction’s ability to represent it. But Roth’s own work in the 1990s put the lie to that, while journalist-turned-novelist Tom Wolfe has continued to campaign for a literature that will reject fashionable literary trends like postmodernism and magic realism, and go out into the street to deal with life as it is really lived by Americans. Now Sinclair Lewis, another product of the American mid-West, is one of Tom Wolfe’s heroes . . .

Millions of tourists expected at Montana's Lewis and Clark sites It took Meriwether Lewis about 2 1/2 years to prepare the Corps of Discovery for its epic journey. Montanans have spent three years, and expect they'll need every available minute, to brace for the bicentennial. By ROB CHANEY of the Missoulian "Three years back, the guest book at Lolo Pass between Memorial Day and Labor Day had 17,000 people sign who specifically said they were following the Lewis and Clark trail," said David Purviance, head of the "Core of Discovery" office at the University of Montana. "If you had 17,000 people in one spot five years before the start of the main events, what's the multiplier?" One guess from the Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research is 8.9 million extra people in the prime bicentennial years of 2005 and 2006. That's an extra 20,915 a day between June 1 and Oct. 31, 2005. Down at Travelers' Rest State Park in Lolo, there is no statue or banner marking the spot where some of the most crucial expedition decisions were made. In fact, the conclusive authenticity of the campsite came in a trace of mercury vapor from an archaeological dig. The vapor was proof that Lewis, Clark and their team made a latrine there and endured some of their standard medical treatment: Dr. Rush's mercury pills, which were prescribed for everything from headaches to syphilis.

Q. I want to contribute to my Roth IRA, but my custodian says that I can't put annual contributions into an account that has been converted. Is this true? And, if so, what should I do?
A.
There's no legal reason for you to separate your contribution and conversion funds into separate accounts. Under the old Roth IRA rules, contributions and conversions had different five-tax-year start times depending on conversion and/or contribution dates. Because of these staggered start times, the IRS suggested that contributions and conversions be maintained in separate Roth IRA accounts. That suggestion was made to the various financial institutions, and the institutions passed that information on to their clients.

March 9, 2001 What can you do if you are hit with an underpayment penalty that was due to a conversion from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA?
Well, in a recent IRS ruling, it appears that the answer is: Nothing! You're stuck with the penalty.
When the Roth IRA was introduced a number of years ago, it was a curious question: When you convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, would the recognition of the additional conversion income trigger the underpayment penalty if the additional tax created by the conversion wasn't covered by withholding or estimated tax payments? It seemed logical that the penalty would apply, but some tax pros seemed to think that this was an "extraordinary" event, and any underpayment penalty assessed by the IRS would be abated by the IRS with the filing of a request for a waiver of the penalty.
Oops, Wrongo!

Single-Transducer, Ultrasonic Imaging Method for High-Temperature Structural Materials Eliminates the Effect of Thickness Variation in the Image
NASA Lewis Research Center's Life Prediction Branch, in partnership with Sonix, Inc., and Cleveland State University, recently advanced the development of, refined, and commercialized an advanced nondestructive evaluation (NDE) inspection method entitled the Single Transducer Thickness-Independent Ultrasonic Imaging Method (refs. 1 to 4). Selected by as one of the 100 most technologically significant new products of 1996, the method uses a single transducer to eliminate the superimposing effects of thickness variation in the ultrasonic images of materials. As a result, any variation seen in the image is due solely to microstructural variation. This nondestructive method precisely and accurately characterizes material gradients (pore fraction, density, or chemical) that affect the uniformity of a material's physical performance (mechanical, thermal, or electrical). Advantages of the method over conventional ultrasonic imaging include (1) elimination of machining costs (for precision thickness control) during the quality control stages of material processing and development and (2) elimination of labor costs and subjectivity involved in further image processing and image interpretation. Conventional ultrasonic imaging versus thickness-independent ultrasonic imaging for silicon nitride monolithic ceramic with pore fraction variations and 10-percent thickness variation. Left: Conventional ultrasonic image. Thickness effect not eliminated; defects not revealed. Right: New thickness-independent ultrasonic imaging. Thickness eliminated; defects revealed.

Capability of Thermographic Imaging Defined for Detection in High-Temperature Composite Materials
Significant effort and resources are being expended to develop ceramic matrix (CMC), metal matrix (MMC), and polymer matrix (PMC) composites for high-temperature engine components and other parts in advanced aircraft. In addition, composite structural material development is being actively pursued in other industries, such as the automobile and sports equipment industries. A portion of the development effort assesses nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies for detecting flaws in these materials. Recent technological advancements in infrared camera technology and computer power have made thermographic (infrared) imaging systems worth reevaluating as a reliable NDE tool for advanced composites. Thermography offers the advantages of real-time inspection, no contact with the sample, nonionizing radiation, complex-shape inspection capability, variable field-of-view size, and portability.
The objective of this NASA Lewis
SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composite defect distribution
and thermography detectability data.
