History State ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Franklin D Roosevelt Franklin D Roosevelt Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the only President who was elected to the office four times. He led the United States through two of the greatest crises of the 20th century - the Great Depression and World War II. He was born on 30 January 1882 at the family estate in the Hudson River Valley of New York state. Roosevelt attended a strict boarding school and Harvard but was an unexceptional student. In 1905 he married Eleanor Roosevelt, niece of president Theodore Roosevelt whose example Franklin had long admired. Five years later he was elected to the New York Senate, where he quickly came to national attention as a rising Democratic politician. Roosevelt loved the sea and naval tradition. Working for the navy during World War I, he achieved a reputation as a capable young administrator. In August 1921, he suddenly fell ill with polio. The attack was severe and left him unable to walk without braces or a cane. In the years that followed, he worked doggedly to regain the use of his legs and to remain a national political figure. He was helped by his wife who acted as his substitute at political meetings. In 1928, Roosevelt was elected Governor for New York and four years later became the Democratic nominee for president. Winning by a landslide, he ushered in a New Deal programme of economic reforms to try to alleviate the Great Depression. "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself", he told the nation in his inaugural address. The economic crisis lessened slightly and Roosevelt won a second term in 1936 backed by farmers, labourers and the poor.

    Franklin Delano Roosevelt 1882-1945
It was actually in 1912 that Roosevelt first distinguished himself as a person apart from the ordinary. He had been elected to the New York Senate in 1910; a remarkable feat for a Democrat within the Republican-controlled state. In opposing Tammany Hall's candidate for the United States Senate, Roosevelt gained significant attention as a dissident to machine politics. This surprised many including Louis Howe who was later to become Roosevelt's closest political adviser. Howe first regarded him, with his "patrician nose," privileged name, and aristocratic mannerisms, as a "spoiled silk-pants sort of guy." It was not until Roosevelt challenged party politics that Howe took the interest in him which would become a lifelong devotion.
Howe's first impressions were largely correct. Roosevelt had been born into a class of wealth and leisure. The Roosevelts and the Delanos had long been successful merchants whose descendants enjoyed a prominent place among the "gentry" of the Hudson River. Roosevelt was born in 1882 and grew up in Hyde Park, his family's sprawling estate in New York, as the only child of two doting parents. He was particularly close to his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt. As was expected of a man of his social standing, Roosevelt received an education in the fashion of English gentry. As a child, he was privately tutored in French and Latin while accompanying his family on tours through Europe. At the age of fourteen, he was enrolled at Groton and four years later, at Harvard University. Following the track of an American "aristocrat," he entered Columbia's Law School in 1904 on the path to settling into a privileged and respectable law career.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Home Page Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States (1933-45), greatly expanded the role of the federal government with a wide-ranging economic and social program, the New Deal, designed to counter the Great Depression of the 1930s. he also led the nation through most of its participation in the global struggle of World War II. Early Life Of Dutch and English ancestry, Roosevelt was born on Jan. 30, 1882 at Hyde Park, N.Y., to James Roosevelt, scion of a noted, wealthy family, and his second wife, Sara Delano Roosevelt.
Franlin led a sheltered youth, educated by governesses, his life revolving about the Hyde Park family estate, and rural Dutchess County, trips to Europe, athletics (especially swimming and boating), and hobbies such as stamp and bird collecting.
At the exclusive Groton School (Groton Massachusetts), Franklin was imbued with a sense of social responsibility. He was an average student at Harvard University, edited the Harvard Crimson in his senior year, and after graduation (1903) attended (1904-07) the Columbia Law School. He dropped out of law school upon admissions to the New York bar and worked (1907-1910) for a Wall Street law firm.
Franklin married a distant cousin, a shy young woman, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, on March 17 1905. Their children were Anna Eleanor, James, Elliott, Franklin D. Jr., and John; a sixth child died at infancy

Wherever it passed, Americans by the hundreds of thousands stood vigil, those who had loved him and those who came to witness a momentous passage in the life of the nation. Men stood with their arms around the shoulders of their wives and mothers. They stood in clusters, heads bowed, openly weeping. They clasped their hands in prayer. A father lifted his son to see the last car, which carried the flag-draped coffin. "I saw everything," the boy said. "That's good," the father said. "Now make sure you remember." He had been President of the United States for 12 of the most tumultuous years in the life of the nation. For many, an America without Roosevelt seemed almost inconceivable. He had guided the nation through democracy's two monumental crisesthe Great Depression and World War II. Those who watched the coffin pass were the beneficiaries of his nation's victory. Their children would live to see the causes for which he stoodprosperity and freedom, economic justice and political democracygather strength throughout the century, come to dominate life in America and in much of the world.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) Scout Leader and US President. FDR was the first President to enter the White House with a Scout leader record. He was president of the Greater New York Councils of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1934 hundreds of thousands of Scouts assembled to hear President Roosevelt's broadcast appealing for help for the needy. In response, Scouts contributed by collecting nearly 2 million articles of clothing, household furnishings, and other articles for needy families.
Boy Scouts of America honored FDR for his noteworthy service to the nation's youth by awarding him the Silver Buffalo, the highest award in scouting.
When FDR died in 1945, he had a record of 24 years' service in Scouting. FDR was also the most famous stamp collector in the United States. US postage stamps issued include Scott# 930-33, 1284, 1305, 1950, 2219d, 2559d.
"As one who has been interested in Scouting over many years it has been most heartening to have so many evidences of the practical values of Scout training. We must remember that next to active military service itself, there is no higher opportunity for serving our country than helping youth to carry on in their efforts to make themselves physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight, and prepared to help their country to the full in time of war, as well as in time of peace. We must make sure that those volunteer agencies which are supplementing the church, the home, and the school by providing programs that will help equip the present generation to cope with life problems in the difficult days ahead are maintained to their maximum capacity and effectiveness." - President Roosevelt
