The structure of this thesaurus This thesaurus is based on Dr Peter Mark Roget's classification structure for his thesaurus. To use a cliche there seemed little point in reinventing the wheel by devising a new classification structure. First appearing in 1852, Roget's Thesaurus had taken him more than 40 years to write. Below is a facsimile of the first page of Roget's manuscript.

Within that structure there are 990 topics. You can browse these topics by going to the " List of Topics " section. Then you can click though to all the cliches listed under that topic.

Preface to Roget's Thesaurus
"The man is not wholly evil - he has a Thesaurus in his cabin"
(quote from the children's book "Peter Pan" by JM Barrie, in his description of "Captain Hook"). The first draft of the Thesaurus was written in 1805, two years before Webster started on his dictionary. However, for a period of 47 years, Dr Roget used his manuscript as his personal, secret, treasure trove. Not until he was 73 years old did he decide to reveal and publish this great manuscript. From the Preface to the first edition of Roget's Thesaurus, he states: Home Introduction Original Introduction Preface ...

Peter Mark Roget
The author of the "Treasury of Words" could hardly have thought that his name would become forever associated with a particular book, even though he hoped that he was suggesting a unique way of utilizing the richness and flexibility of the English language. But for almost 150 years Roget's work has been the constant companion of all those who aspire to use the language most effectively. The career of Peter Mark Roget prior to the publication of his Thesaurus in 1852 when he was 73 years old, while largely devoted to science and to medicine, required of him a facility with words in the delivery of ideas and concepts. A lifetime of secretaryships for several learned societies had thoroughly familiarized him with the need for clarity and forcefulness of expression. That he was justified in his concept is made obvious by the universal acceptance of his thesaurus as an indispensable tool for all those who wish to write and speak with eloquence. In the midst of his desultory round of attendance at lectures and dispensary duties, Roget learned that his uncle had maneuvered for him an opportunity to tutor two scions of a wealthy Manchester manufacturer on a grand tour of Europe. The Peace of Amiens had been signed in 1802 and continental travel was once again open to English families anxious to provide their children with the advantages of foreign scenes.

Draft for a phenakistiscope disc representing a pirouetting dancer
J. Plateau, Corresp. Math. Phys. 1832 VII p.291
In "Sur un nouveau genre d'illusions d'optique" , Plateau describes the construction and the action of a disc with 16 slits and 16 intermediate sectors. When 16 identical drawings are put in the sectors, one sees a stationary image, when looking through the slits at the revolving disc in a mirror. This is in fact the experiment of Faraday. The brilliant contribution of Plateau comes when in stead of putting 16 identical images in the sectors he draws 16 images, which change little by little. Because of the visual persistence the images seen in swift succession will fade into each other and a suggestion of movement is created. It is for this reason that Joseph Plateau is cited as the precursor of the movie, more accurately he is the precursor of the animation film. Demonstration of the use of the phenakistiscope

Appendix II: Creation Scientists Another charge often leveled by evolutionists is that creationists are ignorant, backwards "Bible thumpers" with no education, or that they oppose true science. While it is unfortunately true that most scientists of today have been so thoroughly indoctrinated into the dogma of evolution in their training that they believe it to be a fact, it is also true that there are many scientists with Ph.D's in various fields who do not adhere to the doctrine of evolution and who are staunch creationists with a strong faith in the Bible.
Many of these creationist scientists were not brought up believing in creation, after all, to get a university degree in practically any of the physical sciences in most universities today one is taught that evolution is a fact, and many of these creationist scientists were former evolutionists themselves, however after an honest appraisal of the facts they were open minded enough and humble enough to recognise that what they had been taught to believe was a fact in their High School and College years was nothing but a specious fantasy.
It is also true that most of the founders of the major scientific disciplines over the past two centuries were creationists with a firm belief in God.

CREATIONISM Helen Fryman June 26,1999 In the midst of the debates or wars concerning the issues of creation and evolution, there is a tendency to over-generalize. Both sides often refer to the opposing side with the broad term of either "evolutionist" or "creationist." And yet there exists within both sides a great deal of variety and even controversy. As a creationist myself, I am hoping the following will help increase the understanding of the variety of positions on the creationist side of the fence. In the United States, and perhaps in all the western culture(s), the term "creationism," or "creation," is automatically associated with Christianity and the Bible. In particular it is associated with the book of Genesis, the beginning book of the Bible, which recounts the story of creation. However this generalization ignores those of other faiths who believe just as firmly in creation as opposed to evolution from their respective points of view. The Islamic faith is a creationist faith (whether or not its proponents agree with this position). Information regarding the Islamic creation beliefs may be found here: http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~bakal/islam/nature.html

Roget's Thesaurus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Roget's Thesaurus is the world's best-known thesaurus , created by Dr. Peter Mark Roget ) in and was released to the public in . The original edition had 15,000 words, and each new edition has been larger. The Karpeles Manuscript Library houses the original manuscript in its collection. Dr. Roget described his thesaurus in the foreword to the first edition:
"It is now nearly fifty years since I first projected a system of verbal classification similar to that on which the present work is founded. Conceiving that such a compilation might help to supply my own deficiencies, I had, in the year 1805, completed a classed catalogue of words on a small scale, but on the same principle, and nearly in the same form, as the Thesaurus now published."
Roget's Thesaurus is composed of six primary classes. Each class is composed of multiple divisions and then sections. This may be conceptualized as a tree containing over a thousand branches for individual "meaning clusters" or semantically linked words. These words are not exactly synonyms, but can be viewed as colours or connotations of a meaning or as a spectrum of a concept. One of the most general words is chosen to typify the spectrum as its headword, which labels the whole group.

Mackie to Sharp Back Mackie, David 1f Maclear, Sir Thomas (1794-1879), astronomer, he was born at Newtown Stewart, co. Tyrone. Having studied in Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospitals, and passed distinguished examinations, he was admitted in 1815 a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He married Mary Pearse. The Astronomical Society lent him in 1829 the Wollaston telescope for the purpose of observing a series of occultations of Aldebaran, calculated by himself, and he set it up with a thirty-inch transit in a small observatory in his garden at Biggleswade (Memoirs of Royal Astr. Society, vi. 147). Succeeding Thomas Henderson in 1833 as royal astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope, he arrived there on 5 Jan. 1834, ten days before Sir John Herschel, whose zealous co-operator and attached friend he became. Much care was devoted by him to the collection of meteorological, magnetic, and tidal data; and he set on foot in 1860 the communication of time-signals by electricity to Port Elizabeth and Simon's Town. Lighthouses were through his aid established in South Africa. He sat on a commission of weights and measures. African exploration interested him keenly. Livingstone was his intimate friend, and was instructed by him in the use of the sextant. Maclear visited England, Paris, and Brussels in 1859, and was knighted in June 1860. He wrote 1 tidal letter and received 1.
