A(gnes) Mary F(rances) Robinson (1857-1944)
"There have been few instances of any young writer so rapidly coming into wide and strongly interested notice as that of Miss Mary Robinson. Her first little volume, A Handful of Honeysuckle , was plainly to a large extent derivative, but at the same time it showed so much native sweetness, so much delicacy of touch and occasional strength, that great things began to be prophesied of the youg poetess. In due time appeared The Crowned Hippolytus: and other Poems , and Miss Robinson's position was confirmed, the volume exhibiting very marked increase of strength, though it was not without some markedly tentative efforts. Personally, I do not think this volume of verse has yet been done full justice to. In 1884 was published The New Arcadia , a book that deservedly attracted very considerable attention; though some of Miss Robinson's most discriminating friends doubted the advisability of her attempting the reform of the condition of the agricultural classes by means of poetic special pleading. There are, unfortunately, too many examples of the ruin of poetic and artistic genius through the tendency (so rapidly growing into unconscious or uncontrolled habit) to "preach." Since this anthology was first published, another volume of verse by Miss Robinson has appeared, under the title An Italian Garden . This writer has a very sweet and true lyric voice: if she will be but loyal to herself, she may yet take a very high place indeed..." (

The Victorian Sonnet
Much poetry of the Victorian period is no longer very highly esteemed, for reasons that seem apparent after reading a number of sonnetsa sentimental self-indulgence and what F. R. Leavis called an "inferiority, in rigour and force, of intellectual content." Yet, when looked at individually, the poems are often graceful and moving, and their worst, most conventional excesses seem no more ridiculous than the stock courtly love sequences of the 16th and 17th centuries. Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), who wrote Sonnets from the Portuguese to her husband ( Robert Browning (1812-1889)), is probably the most genuinely popular (and critically maligned) sonneteer of this period. Other British Victorian writers included here are Thomas Hood Charles Tennyson Turner (1808-1879), and his more famous brother, Alfred, Lord Tennyson Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), best known for "Dover Beach," wrote several sonnets. George Meredith (1828-1909) wrote a lengthy sequence, Modern Love , about the ruin of his marriage. Although the sequence consisted of rhymed sixteen-line iambic pentameter poems, ever since the poet and critic Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) praised these poems as sonnets (and Meredith used the term himself in Sonnet 30 ), they have been widely accepted as specimens of the form. In addition to Meredith and Swinburne, the late 19th century

The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory
Broadview, 1999, 1492 pp., ISBN 1-55111-100-4, $35.95
Description:
The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory is the most comprehensive collection of poetry from the period ever published. Included are generous selections from the work of all major poets, and a representation of the work of virtually every poet of significance, from Thomas Ashe at the beginning of the era to Charlotte Mew at its end. The work of Victorian women poets features very prominently, with extensive selections not only of the work of canonical poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti, but also of that of poets such as Augusta Webster for which high claims have recently been made by critics. The anthology reflects (and will contributed to) the ongoing reassessment of the canon that is central to English Studies today; in all sixty-six poets are represented. The editors have included complete works wherever feasible including the complete texts of Tennyson's In Memoriam and of a number of other long poems. A headnote by the editors introduces the work of each poet, and each selection has been newly annotated.
