- James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) I crave, dear Lord, No boundless hoard Of gold and gear, Nor jewels fine, Nor lands, nor kine, Nor treasure-heaps of anything.- Let but a little hut be mine Where at the hearthstore I may hear The cricket sing, And have the shine Of one glad woman's eyes to make, For my poor sake, Our simple home a place divine;- Just the wee cot-the cricket's chirr- Love, and the smiling face of her. I pray not for Great riches, nor For vast estates, and castle-halls,- Give me to hear the bare footfalls Of children o’er An oaken floor, New-risen with sunshine, or bespread

Dr. E. Searing, Principal's Welcome During the 1996-1997 school year, Riley Elementary School began renovation. Although plans for remodeling the Riley facility had been discussed for some time, the familiar brick building underwent structural changes beginning in March, 1996. At that time, a multi-purpose room, a large foyer, and a suite of expanded administrative offices were under construction. Several life safety measures were updated as well. Nevertheless, although the appearance of the building has changed, the enthusiasm and pride of Riley students continues to reflect its time-honored goals and preserve its treasured traditions. James Whitcomb Riley. (18491916). Her Beautiful Hands. O YOUR HANDSthey are strangely fair! Fair for the jewels that sparkle
http://www.photoaspects.com/snr/poems/riley.html
James Whitcomb Riley
Her Beautiful Hands O YOUR HANDS they are strangely fair!
Fair for the jewels that sparkle there,
Fair for the witchery of the spell
That ivory keys alone can tell;
But when their' delicate touches rest
Here in my own do I love them best,
As I clasp with eager, acquisitive spans
My glorious treasure of beautiful hands!
Marvelous wonderful beautiful hands!
They can coax roses to bloom in the strands
Of your brown tresses;and ribbons will twine, Under mysterious touches of thine, Into such knots as entangle the soul And fetter the heart under such a control As only the strength of my love understands My passionate love for your beautiful hands. As I remember the first fair touch Of those beautiful hands that I love so much, I seem to thrill as I then was thrilled, Kissing the glove that I found unfilled When I met your gaze, and the queenly bow, As you said to me, laughingly, "Keep it now!". . . And dazed and alone in a dream I stand, Kissing this ghost of your beautiful hand. When first I loved, in the long ago, And held your hand as I told you so Pressed and caressed it and gave it a kiss And said "I could die for a hand like this!"

Celebrating Fine Art in the American Tradition
This page includes links to artists, authors, composers, philosophers, churchmen and scholars who represent, in our view, the foundations of art, science, and religion in America. Though made up primarily of pre-moderns, we have added a select few contemporary individuals whose exceptional contributions to American art make them worthy of inclusion. This page is very much a work in progress. If you would like to suggest additional individuals who we may have overlooked, please send us an email.

    James Whitcomb Riley iley, James Whitcomb (1849-1916), American poet, born in Greenfield, Indiana. At the age of 16 he left school and joined a group of itinerant sign painters. Subsequently he acted in a patent-medicine show and worked for a newspaper. From 1877 to 1885 he was a regular contributor of verse to the Indianapolis Journal under the pen name of Benj. F. Johnson, of Boone. Some of the poems were collected in The Old Swimmin' Hole and 'Leven More Poems (1883), a volume that achieved great popularity. His best-known poems include "Little Orphant Annie,""The Raggedy Man," and "When the Frost Is on the Punkin." Riley's popularity derived mainly from his quaint use of Hoosier dialect, his cheerful and whimsical sense of humor, and his intimate understanding of life in the rural Midwest. His other works include Rhymes of Childhood (1890) and Poems Here at Home (1893).
