    Act I, Scene 1
    Arcadia (Title).
A region of ancient Greece in the central Peloponnesus. Its inhabitants, somewhat isolated from the rest of the world, proverbially lived a simple, pastoral life. Arcadia is a real but also an imaginary place. Featured a simple pastoral existence, the natural, rural life, that was an antidote to City life. It was a life of food, dance, singing, music, sexual activity, and beautiful surroundings; a happy life, preserved from the influence of the outside world. In a sense, the redesign of the garden is Arcadian, in that it is Romantic and escapist: it downplays the hardship and oppression of life outside. Septimus, Byron, Lady Croom, and Captain Brice, all indulge in erotic adventures that they mistakenly think will not complicate their lives. The Arcadian literary tradition includes Classical Greek poetry, and an Elizabethan prose classic of this name ( Arcadia ) which featured debate, fable, and plot. The artistic tradition includes a famous Poussin picture: Et in Arcadia Ego , which features 3 anxious shepherds and a nymph, arranged around a tomb with this inscription. There is a double meaning: 1. I (death) too am in Arcadia; and 2. I (the dead person) used to live in Arcadia. This double meaning, of course, is relevant to the play: both life and love are ephemeral. There are carnal embraces, but in the end Thomasina dies.
