Jean Baptiste Racine
French Dramatist
Racine was a master playwright who was inpired by the classical Greek tragedy. He was born in La Ferte-Milon, France. He studied at Beauvais and Port Royal, then went to Paris, where he began to write plays in 1664. The production of Andromaque (1667), the first of his 7 masterpieces, became one of the most important events in the history of French theater, and Racine became regarded as the master of tragic pathos. Other plays followed soon: Britannicus (1669); Bajazet (1672); and Berenice (1679). The great actress Sarah Bernhardt won fame playing the lead role in his most famous play - a tragedy called Phedre (1677). www link :

In France also early opera was dominated by the Italian. Cardinal Richelieu, a great patron of the arts and virtual ruler of France, favoured Italian opera. The Medici consorts were also a great influence for Italian opera, as were the Italian builders of the palace of Fontainbleu, then being constructed.

Despite the patronage of Mazarin the French courtiers objected to the use of Italian in opera, and Italian opera in general. It was the advent of another Italian, Jean-Baptiste Lully, who was to give France an opera a style of its own.
