Proust, Marcel 1871-1922, French novelist, b. Paris. He is one of the great literary figures of the modern age. Born to wealthy bourgeois parents, he suffered delicate health as a child and was carefully ministered to by his mother. As a young man he ambitiously mingled in high Parisian society and wrote his unpromising first work, Les Plaisirs et les jours (1896, tr. Pleasures and Regrets, 1948). Troubled by asthma and neuroses, as well as by the deaths of his parents, he increasingly withdrew from external life and after 1907 lived mainly in a cork-lined room, working at night on his monumental cyclic novel, (16 vol., 1913-27, tr. Remembrance of Things Past, 1922-32). The first of the series, (1913, tr. Swann's Way, 1928) went unnoticed, but the second, (1919, tr. Within a Budding Grove, Jean Santeuil (1952, tr. 1955), and Contre Sainte-Beuve (1954, tr. On Art and Literature, 1896-1919, Reader's Guide to Marcel Proust

Proust, Marcel (1871-1922).

Figure 2.I believe these are the Proust brothers. The French were not as taken with the kilt as the British and Americans, but the dresses worn by these boys in a photograph dating about the 1870s has been clearly influenced by the kilt. Here Robert wears a white kilt. I'm not sure if this was done because he was the younger brother. He also has his hair styled in a kinf of large curl. Marcel wears his hair in bangs. They look to be about 5-7 years old.
    Biography: Marcel Proust (1871-1922)
Marcel's parents were solid French bourgeois. His father, Adrien Proust, was a respected doctor. His mother, Jeanne Weil, was from a prosperous, educated Jewish family from Alsace. Marcel was born in Paris during 1871 and the rise of the Pais Commune. He was a sickly child, suffering from asthma from his early childhood. We have only limited information on Marcel's boyhood clothes. Proust (and I think his bother) as a boy wore dresses and other skirted garments. He appears to have worn smocks in school. Gradually his different essays merged into one single project to write a more comprehensive work. The book turned into a novel that he would continue to write for the rest of his life. He mamed his book À la recherche du temps perdu (Remembrance of Things Past). This autobiographical novel was written mostly in the stream-of-consciousness style. The work includeds a dizzying collection of childhood memmories, literary ans sociological discusions from cultured salons, observations of the wealthy life style, social gossip, and much more. Proust is not the easiest author to read. Literary critics at the time disagreed about the merits of his novel. Some saw him as a brilliant writer. Others complained that it was impossible to read the wok. Most modern scholars see

The work collected pieces from Proust's childhood, observations of aristocratic life-style, gossip, recollections of the closed world, where the author never found his place. The key scene is when a madeleine cake (a small, rich cookie-like pastry) enables the narrator to experience the past completely as a simultaneous part of his present existence: "And suddenly the memory revealed itself: The taste was that of the little piece of madeleine which on Sunday mornings at Combray (because on those mornings I did not go out before mass), when I went to say good morning to her in her bedroom, my aunt Léonie used to give me, dipping it first in her own cup of tea or tisane." Jean Santeuil and CONTRE-SAINTE BEUVE, an attack on the biographical criticism of Sainte-Beuve, were discovered in the 1950s.

Under the patronage of the latter, Proust published in 1896 his first book, Les Plaisirs et les Jours , a collection of short stories, essays and poems. It was not very successful. Proust had begun in autumn 1895 a novel which he later abandoned in autumn 1899 and never finished. It was finally published in 1952 as Jean Santeuil After this second setback, Proust devoted several years to translating and annotating the works of the English art historian John Ruskin. He published a number of articles on Ruskin, as well as two translations: La Bible d'Amiens in 1904 and in 1906.
