William Thomas Walsh (1891-1949)
William was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on September 11, 1891, and through the years was given a sound Catholic education that would inspire him in later years with a fierce desire to defend it. After acquiring a B.A from Yale, he worked as a reporter at various newspapers for a few years, taught one year in a Hartford public high school, and in 1910, published his first book, The Mirage of the Many . Walsh wrote it as a warning to those who would follow Socialism. In 1914, he married Helen Gerard Sherwood. Four years later he became head of the department of English at Roxbury School, and in 1933 professor of English at Manhattanville College, New York City. It wasn't until twenty years after his first book that Walsh finally wrote and published a second. Isabella of Spain , which was translated into Spanish (and later into French and German), was published six years before the advent of the Spanish Civil War. Philip II , a massive volume that covers anyone who was anyone from the years 1527-1598, was published one year after the initiation of the war against the Catholic Faith in Spain. The London Times regarded it as more gripping than fiction. The New York Times claimed that, "

Chapter 6
THE GENERAL LITERARY DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNITED STATES
I. The Historians. II. Orators and Statesmen. III. The Writers of Pennsylvania and New York. IV. Novelists and Humorists. V. Poetry South and North. VI. Scholars and Essayists. THE period in our literary history which produced our most distinguished writers in prose and verse has not yet been fully described. Contemporary with these the popular classics of our literature there were many authors of lesser rank whose names belong in the record of our literary development. Some of these may be designated as the minor essayists, novelists, and poets of their generation, while some are our foremost representatives in other fields of literary effort as yet not touched upon.
I. THE HISTORIANS.
First in this enumeration are the historical writers who constitute an important group among the authors of the century. The most brilliant of the number were Prescott, Motley, and Parkman. These three men were thoroughly representative of the traditional New England aristocracy of culture. They were all residents of Boston and graduates of Harvard College. A peculiar coincidence is found in the fact that both Prescott and Parkman suffered from the affliction of partial blindness, and that it was only in spite of extraordinary difficulty, by the exercise of consummate patience, that each was successful in his achievement.

27. Famous American Historians Of The 19th Century
William Hickling Prescott (17961859) was not a profoundly philosophical historian, yet he became the most brilliant and famous of our historical writers.

Famous American historians of the 19th century
William Ellery Channing was a great name in the early days of liberal religious thought. The Brook Farm experiment grew out of the transcendental movement. It lasted from 1840 until 1847. Among its members were George William Curtis, Charles Anderson Dana, John Sullivan Dwight, Margaret Fuller, and George Ripley.
Richard Hildreth's "History of the United States" is dry in style, judicial in tone, never aiming at brilliance or entertainment.
William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859) was not a profoundly philosophical historian, yet he became the most brilliant and famous of our historical writers. This was owing no less to his selection of romantic themes in which the American people felt an interest, as belonging to the New World, than to his artistic arrangement of the events, and to his captivating style.
The first installment of Prescott's life-work appeared in 1837, having cost him more than ten years' assiduous labor. It was the "History of Ferdinand and Isabella," printed at his own expense. The romantic nature of the subject, enhanced by the author's dignified yet charming style, gave it a popularity which it has retained to the present day. It was soon translated into several European languages, and caused the author to be ranked as the foremost of American historians. In 1843 appeared the "Conquest of Mexico," which had an unparalleled reception, both from the general public and from the highest authorities. It won special praise from Wilhelm von Humboldt, who had visited that country. Four years later the "Conquest of Peru" was published.
