ORGAN RENOVATION PROJECT As our Church building was being built in 1889, the Ladies Aid Society donated the funds to add a Pipe Organ that had not been included in the original plans. This was both very bold thinking and tremendous foresight. As events actually transpired, this was probably the only time that a Pipe Organ could have been placed in our Church. Organ builders Whalley and Genung were engaged to build the best unit they could for the available funds, and the resulting tracker style pipe organ has been a vital part of over six thousand services during the instruments one hundred thirteen year history. The original Organ was hand-pumped for perhaps the first sixty years, usually by young men, some of whom would doze off during the sermon and fail to be available for the closing hymn! The maintenance and upkeep history of the instrument has also known periods where those responsible appeared to “doze off”. Records indicate that more than once “urgent maintenance” was needed simply to keep the organ operable. In the late ‘sixties, the Church first hired Richard Bond to overhaul and maintain the instrument, which he has done for over thirty years. His first task was an “urgent” overhaul of a badly run down instrument. As we enter the 21 st century, our Pipe Organ is officially recognized as an historical instrument, much respected by the American Guild of Organists.

One week later, on April 16 th , the entire community is invited to survey the structures. This will also mark the 144 th anniversary of the churchís birth in this community. The church was organized at the home of Charles P. Mosely, on the site of the water tower, on April 26, 1845 and the first services were held in the tavern owned by Mr. Mosely. It was first known as the First Congregational Church of Fairfield and connected with the convention in Beloit. Charter members were: Chas. P. Mosely, Jerusha Mosely, John B. Prentiss, Mary Fuller, Catherine Prentiss, Rebecca Kierstead, Maria Auger, Ben Fuller, Hannah Fuller, Catherine Fox, Lucinda Williams and Malvine Graves. In November of 1846 the form of government was changed from Congregational to Presbyterian and called First Presbyterian Church of Rome. (Oregon was still Rome Corners.) Rev. Matthew A. Fox was the first minister and served for nearly 40 years. (His picture always hung in the Sunday school room and watched us very intently as we learned our lessons and also supervised our social activities when we had gatherings there.)

History of the Paris Presbyterian Church
The early history of the Paris Presbyterian Church is closely woven to that of Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church.
In 1842, Rev. W. P. Cochran was commissioned by the Palmyra Presbytery to organize our church. Thirty members of Pleasant Hill Church were dismissed to help with the organization.
The Paris congregation has had 3 church buildings, each brick construction, and all on the same site. The first building was erected in 1840-two years before our church was organized-by a group known as the "New School" Presbyterians.
During much of the time between 1842-1908, Pleasant Hill and Paris were served together by stated supply ministers.
The first installed minister was Rev. John McFarlane in 1893. By this time, the congregation was in its second building, which was built in 1877 and used until 1919.
The history of this church was greatly influenced by pastor, Rev. C. F. Richmond, who served the church from 1898 until 1934.
In 1922 the annual report slowed a record of 200 members. Large numbers of members were added to the roll when evangelist Trigg Thomas conducted revival meetings in 1918 and again in 1932.

Scope and Content Note
The Records of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale consist of materials relating to the establishment and growth of the church and the development of the city of Carbondale. The records date from the 1850s to the 1970s. A history of the church’s early years, contained in the collection, was written by Daniel Harmon Brush, a founder of Carbondale and a founding member of the church. The collection is divided into three sections: Historical Materials, which document church history and Carbondale city development; Business Materials, which are financial records documenting primarily construction of the Carbondale Presbyterian churches; and the Women’s Association History, which contains material on various church women’s groups such as the Ladies Aid Society and the Missionary Society. The Historical Materials section contains church histories, records of church groups, church newsletters, materials documenting relations with national and state Presbyterian synods, dismissions and transfer certificates of members, lists of ministers, missionaries, and subscribers to the church, cornerstone contents, and centennial celebration plans. The Business Materials series contains the financial records of the church such as accounts, treasurer’s reports, mortgages, bonds, vouchers, loans and invoices. Well-documented in this section are the plans for, the construction of, and the invoices of transactions for erecting the new church in 1905-06.

Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church
On December 3, 1855, the North Plainfield Sunday School was organized in a room rented for six months for $15.00. At that time North Plainfield was a small community of less-than-500 residents and 50 buildings. In June, 1870, the first meeting of the Warren Union Mission Sunday School, organized by Miss Jeanie Wheeler, was held. To provide a home for the Sunday School, plans were for a chapel building. By year's end, a site on Chatham Street was purchased, plans were prepared, and the building was completed and occupied. Job Male, an early Mayor of Plainfield, and a contributor to the building fund, donated his services to design and complete the building's specifications. The total cost of the project was $3,486 including land and furniture. The thirty-two-member group changed the Chapel's name to Warren Chapel. The Chapel Constitution stated that the religious services were to be non-sectarian. In 1893, the membership voted to become affiliated with Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church, along with Hope and Bethel Chapels. Rev. Joseph O. McKelvey became Pastor and $200.00 was budgeted for Sunday School expenses. The Crescent Avenue Church Session minutes report that a meeting was held on February 4, 1894 at Warren Chapel to receive new members. The worship service that followed was attended by about nineteen members and included:

- The oldest church in Paris, Texas was begun during the Republic of Texas as the Cumberland Presbyterian Church by Reverend Samuel M. Corley, a circuit rider based in Clarksville. He was assigned to the foreign mission board by the Synod of Mississippi. "I ride nearly 500 miles in extent with 33 appointments which I try to fill monthly. This is very laborous, but I am strengthened in view of the recompense of reward." The reward averaged $150 annually.
- Rev. Corley went off to the Mexican War.
- Commissioners made a deed to John A. Rutherford, Claiborne Chisum and John Emberson for two lots. A brick church was built, probably the first such structure in this section of Texas.
- The three churches in Paris held candlelight services with singing led by a member. Two churches used a tuning fork to get the pitch, but Cumberland Presbyterian Church had a small cottage organ.
- At least two members were "read out of " the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for training and racing horses. The church did not approve "dancing, card playing and horse racing."

IN SEARCH OF OUR OWN CHURCH HOME
Sunday School Picnic, 1934 style! With the Anglicans firmly settled into their own church building, the Presbyterian Church of Canada took the remaining Protestants of the Squamish Valley under its wing. Mr. Matheson, a Theology student from Queen's College, Kingston, Ontario, was appointed to serve Squamish, or Newport as it was then known, for the summer months. Services were held in the school building, a two room wooden framed building which had been constructed on the west side of Third Street, almost directly across the lane behind the present Christian Education Centre. In 1914, Mr. Matheson was replaced by another student from Queen's, a Mr. Corkill, who served the Squamish community until he enlisted in the First World War. During the next few years, services were taken by Mr. Robert Young, a lay member of the Presbyterian Church, and by Mr. William Mashiter, a lay member of the Anglican Church. A number of students from Westminster Hall, the Presbyterian Theological College in Vancouver, also travelled to Squamish to hold Sunday Services. Among these travelling ministers-in-training were J.C. Goodfellow, J.L. Clerihue, D. Donaldson, A.C. Smith and H.M. Rae. The first Sunday School in Squamish itself was started by Robert Young. He served as Superintendent, assisted by Mr. William McNeil. This Sunday School also included the Anglican children until 1927, when aa second Sunday School was started in the Anglican church. When the new Mashiter School was opened, the Presbyterians continued to hold services in the unused school building 1919, when Dr. N.J. Paul returned from overseas and purchased the structure for his home. During the next two years, services moved to the Rex Theatre, now the Howe Sound Business Centre.

Introduction The First United Presbyterian Church collection (1861-1978) contains minutes, membership roll books, treasurer's records, annual reports, and United Presbyterian Women's record books. The collection was loaned to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University for microfilming in March 1978 as a result of the Wood County Historical Church Records Survey. The collection is contained on two rolls of microfilm. The manuscript register was compiled by Mark Barnes in March 1980.
Agency History On July 19, 1861, seventeen members of Plain Congregational Church were dismissed to organize a Presbyterian Church in Tontogany, with the Rev. Perry C. Baldwin serving as first minister. The church was governed until 1959 by two boards: the session, comprised of elders having charge of the spiritual life of the church, and the trustees, having charge of the church property. In 1959, a unicameral system was adopted, consisting of one board of twelve elders, with committees being appointed to implement policies. The original church building, erected in 1861, as been remodeled many times over the years. The latest addition, an education unit, was built in 1961.
