LADIES AID Annual Report Our group consists of eleven ladies. We meet the third Thursday of the month at 2 pm. in St. Paul’s Court. We support the Soup Kitchen, the Caring Cupboard and the Canadian Bible Society. We visit monthly, former members now residing in Nursing Homes. Mary President/Treasurer Annual Report 2001 The Ladies Aid reports a successful year. We donated monies to the Church, the Bible Society, the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, and the Caring Cupboard. We meet the third Thursday of the month at 2 p.m. in the Common Room of St. Paul's Court. We would be very happy to have any ladies of the church join our group for an afternoon of fellowship and worship. During the year, we lost three active members, as they found it necessary to go into nursing homes. Two of our shut-ins passed away during the year: Ann Wood and Alice McKen. As usual, our June meeting was held at the home of our President, Mary S. This is always an enjoyable afternoon. A few members went on our summer outing in August for lunch and a bit of shopping, which we enjoyed. We still save our pennies throughout the year, and have a Bring and Buy Sale in November, which is fun and helps us raise a little money. We take turns visiting our shut-ins each month.

The first church board consisted of Henry A.

years after the main part of the church was built, an addition tor the Sunday School was built at the back and a room upstairs tor the Sunday School and Ladies Aid meetings. Brunswick, he was educated at Dalhousie College and
had charges at Brookfield, N.S. and Dalhousie, N.B.
Throat trouble forced his resignation from the latter and
he came west for his health. He located at Macleod
September 5, 1891 and took charge of the Presbyterian
Church at that place. His predecessor had a congregation
of only 5 people. In the first six months, Rev. Hamilton
collected only 50 dollars from his pastorate. He had to do the janitor work. The next year he collected $646.00, and the following year $1200.00. At the end of the first six months his congregation had grown from five to ninety, and attendance thereafter averaged 100. When he came to Cardston a lot was bought from Sterling Williams and a manse was completed by December I897. The church was finished by June 1898, and is now (1978) a private home east of the manse. The First United Presbyterian Church of Fremont donated a portion of its records to the Hayes Presidential Center in 1968 (LH-160) . Additional material was donated in 1999 and is listed as an addenda (LH-295) . Selected records have been microfilmed and are available for viewing in the Hayes Presidential Center’s reading room. A photocopy of the church’s records from 1833 to 1885 appears in the Hayes Presidential Center’s reading room under the title Records of the Presbyterian Church in Lower Sandusky, Volume I 1833 - 1885 (F499 F9F51 ORR). The volume includes an index of names of members whose baptisms, dismissals, transfers, and deaths appear in the records. This index has also been entered in a genealogy database at the Hayes Presidential Center and is also available online www.rbhayes.org/index Agency History That first church was torn down in 1869 and the present building begun with the corner stone laid July 15. The following January the basement rooms were ready for the worshipers and the rest of the building completed and dedicated April 27, 1873. A Ladies Aid Society had formed to pay for the furnishings of the new church by means of socials, oyster suppers, mite-meetings, and strawberry parties. At this time there was a membership of 200 and it was decided, since the church was debt-free, to pursue a "free seat system" and welcome all people of Fremont and the vicinity.

Women Serve the Church The first official record of any women's in RPC was in 1878, six years after the church's founding. In that year, Mrs. Trowbridge, wife of the first pastor, started the Women's Missionary Society, which held meetings and raised money in support of the church's missionary activities. It continued in existence until the formation of the Women's Association in 1954. However, it is quite possible that the Ladies'Aid Society antedates the Missionary Society, or began soon after, although no mention of it is contained in church records until 1888, when its strong support in the building and furnishing of the new church parlors was acknowledged. Ladies' Aid contributed $500 toward the $3.000 cost of construction and was responsible for decoration of the parlors. In 1896, 30 new members were received and Sunday School enrollment reached 120. The congregation was outgrowing its building and plans were drawn up to enlarge and reconfigure the sanctuary to provide seating for 400. Also included was a parsonage (now called the manse) to adjoin the church. The total cost of the project was estimated at $10,000, about half for the enlargement and half for the parsonage. By the end of August, $4,150 had been pledged and the Ladies' Aid Society contributed $1,000 more. As the project went forward, the ladies decided they wanted a larger kitchen than planned and voted to pay the added $105 cost, as well as to carpet the church. Previously, they had donated a piano, bought for $265 on the installment plan. To raise funds, they held a "Railroad Social," two concerts and a bazaar, netting in all over $750.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
The United Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood came into being when the St. James United Presbyterian Church, also of Ridgewood, made overtures to unite with the First Presbyterian Church of East Williamsburgh, by which name our church was known since its founding in 1863. The merger of the two churches took place in October 1993, coinciding with the 130 th anniversary of the East Williamsburgh Church. There were 26 persons who banded together in the Civil War year of 1862 to petition the Presbytery of Nassau to organize a Presbyterian church in this area in which the preaching would be in the German Language. They were led by the Rev. Louis Eulner, a missionary from the American Tract Society, who had conducted Sunday School in their homes. In October 1863, the church called its first pastor. A little white wooden church was built and dedicated in 1864 on the site of the present edifice. It was not until 1875 that Rev. Eulner returned to the struggling young church and became its fifth pastor, a position he held for 20 years. In 1903, the Rev. John Dietz answered the call of the congregation and served for the next 25 years. During that time, the old building outgrew its thriving congregation and, with the help of the Ladies Aid Society, the church raised the necessary funds ($78,000) to erect this Renaissance-style building, its precious stained glass windows imported from France. The dedication took place on May 22, 1910 when the congregation numbered 500 and there were 750 pupils in the Sunday School.

1925- AND CHURCH UNION
The congregation of the Squamish Presbyterian Church realized that a Union of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches in Canada was fast becoming a possibility, after more than thirty years of discussions. On June 10th, 1925 a majority of the three churches united to form the United Church of Canada, and on August 23rd, 1927 the Squamish Presbyterian Church decided to become the Squamish United Church. As yet, there was no resident minister; theological students still served the congregation, and a minister from Lillooet came to Squamish occasionally to hold a Sunday Service. Finally, in May of 1929, the Rev. Evan Baker was posted to Squamish, serving our church for one year. He was succeeded by the Rev. J.G. Gibson who, with his wife, ministered to the Squamish United Church from 1930 to 1942, broken only by a nine month period holiday in Europe in 1933. Rev. Gibson's long ministry gave the congregation a much needed feeling of solidarity and permanence.
BUILDING THE MANSE
With a resident minister and his family firmly settled in Squamish, permanent living quarters were needed within easy reach of the church. In 1930, the Ladies Aid under the presidency of Mrs. D.D. Morrison bravely undertook the task of providing a manse; Mrs. Morrison retained that post until 1939, when the mortgage on the manse was finally burned.

Church History
On August 4th, 1922 the first Protestant church in Sylvan Lake was dedicated to the glory of God and in memory of the early pioneers of the area, hence the name Sylvan Lake Memorial Presbyterian Church. However this was not the very beginning of this church. For several years previously people had gathered for worship in their homes and, later, in the Hazelwood Hotel and Dingwall Boarding House. These services were conducted by the people themselves or student ministers until finally their first resident minister, Rev. W.G. McKechnie , was appointed by the Board of Missions (as was each and every subsequent minister until Rev. Wilson was "called" by this congregation in 1995). Besides taking responsibility for their own worship services, these early Christian Pioneers set about raising funds for a church building. On January 5, 1921 the Ladies Aid Society was formed for this express purpose. By means of chicken suppers , teas, musical concerts and other activities the Ladies Aid Society and the Board of Managers were able to purchase the land (where the Memorial Presbyterian Church stands today) and the building materials required. The church was erected with volunteer labour and furnished with more money raised by the Ladies Aid Society. The first Communicant members listed in the 1927 records were:
  • Mrs. J. Dingwall
