Faithfulness and Holiness: The Witness of J.C. Ryle
, by J.I. Packer. Packer introduces this Anglican clergyman and man of faith as a spiritual mentor to a new generation. Ryle (1816-1900) endured much in his life, going from affluence to bankruptcy in a day and being three-times widowed, but recognized the divine wisdom of it all for ultimate good. Included is the complete text of the first edition of Ryle’s classic book, Holiness A Better Way: Rediscovering the Drama in God-Centered Worship , by Michael Horton. A fresh analysis of theologically driven worship. The Incomparable Christ , by John Stott. The Blessed Hope: The Autobiography of John F. Walvoord , with Mal Couch. Walvoord was president of Dallas Theological Seminary for 34 years from 1952-86. Why One Way? Defending an Exclusive Claim in an Inclusive World , by John MacArthur. To a world that increasingly rejects absolute truth, Jesus still says “I am the way”. Disciplines of a Godly Woman , by Barbara Hughes. Companion volume to her husband Kent Hughes’ book, Disciplines of a Godly Man A Distant Presence: The Story Behind Paul’s Letter to the Philippians , by Tim Woodruff ( Narrative Commentary Series). Combines the power of story with the insights of a biblical commentary.

A Preliminary Checklist "Achtundvierziger" in den Armeen der Union:
ABSTRACT Despite the works by Faust, Kaufmann, Lonn, Rosengarten, Wittke, Rowan, Zucker, and others (see bibliography) to name the most important sources, a comprehensive history of the contribution of the "Forty-eighters", has yet to be written. To date, the tainted image of the "lop-eared", cowardly "Dutch" that the Anglo-American press created during and after the war remains very much intact. Due to the absence of other sources and the predominance of neo-confederate sympathies in popular history-writing, it has been repeated by every generation of American scholars. The fact that these veterans of the European revolutions were an early "International Brigade", and that their effort bridges the gap between European failures and American success of the world-wide democratic project, has been all but ignored. The following is a preliminary checklist of names and ranks as they appear in the sources indicated. Where the status of a person is unclear, it has been marked by a (?). Some refugees of the Austro-Hungarian insurrection have also been included, also veterans of the Schleswig-Holstein war of 1848; members of Garibaldi's forces only if they were Germans. This list will be updated as more data become available. Albert, Anselm

GRATITUDE
In this issue:
    Perspective 1 - A Botched Job
Perspective 2 - "You Saved My Life"
    Perspective 3 - Only a Fighting Chance
Don't stand too close to me, because with the next statement I just may be struck by lightning. Here goes. I think there's something missing from the Biblespecifically, from the narrative of Jesus' final forty days on earth after the resurrection. What's missing? Gratitude. Linda and I love the old television series from the Seventies and early Eighties, M*A*S*H. One of our favorite episodes involves a wounded Marine, played by Alex Karras. In surgery, Hawkeye (played by Alan Alda) saves the hulking Marine's life who, upon waking in recovery, declares his undying appreciation to the weary doctor:
"Well doc, you saved my life. No one's ever done that before. Hawkeye Pierce. Well, you're some kinda genius doctorand I'm gonna pay you back, doc. Anything. You just name it."

February, 1983 Dear fellow-laborer, Enclosed is a list of all the hymns in our present book and a few from the various leaflets that are being used by our people in different countries. Some of the old hymns and some in these leaflets would be unknown to many of our workers. Therefore, we have compiled a new leaflet so all the workers can get acquainted with the music and the words of these hymns, enabling them to choose what they would like for the new book. The enclosed list will be used as a ballot. On the ballot, if you would put an 'X' in the box in front of the hymns you would like for the book, then the favorites of all could be tallied. The hymns you would like to be in the gospel section could be marked with a 'G' in the box instead of an 'X'. From all the hymns listed on the ballot each worker would have the choice of 335 hymns (the same number that is in the present book). Some of our friends in California have offered the use of tabulating machines that would simplify counting the votes. After you have gotten acquainted with the hymns on the leaflet and have made your choice of hymns, you can send the completed ballot, plus any additional hymns or corrections to: L. McMullen, 108 - 7th Street S.W., Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, R1N 2K5

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

    Martin Luther, 1483-1546
Loosely based on Psalm 46:1-3, this "Battle Hymn of the Reformation" speaks of the Christian believer's victory over "mortal ills" and the powers of darkness. That timeless message still inspires us to be bold and unafraid in God's service, even though the hymn was written more than 450 years ago.
All Creatures of Our God and King
    Francis of Assisi, 1182-1226
Born into a wealthy family, Francis forsook it all to pursue a life of prayer, preaching, and repairing old church buildings. It is said that he even preached to the birds and that they listened! This hymn calls upon all of God's creation to praise Him and is strikingly similar in content and construction to Psalm 148.
    All Glory, Laud, and Honor
