POTTER, HELEN BEATRIX
Mycologist, writer (1866 - 1943) She was the first child of Rupert and Helen Leech Potter, born July 28, 1866 in London, England. She is known today for her wonderful children's stories. Just about everyone is familiar with the tale of Peter Rabbit. During her later years she was widely respected throughout England as an expert on fungi, although the Royal Society did refuse to publish at least one of her technical papers. From many walks in the woods she amassed a set of detailed watercolors of fungi. The collection (some 270 completed by 1901) is in the Armitt Library, Ambleside, England. Around the time of her death in 1943 many of her notes, including her paper on spores, were burned during the bombing of London in WWII. She kept a private journal which wasn't published until 1966. The reason for this is that it was written in a code of her own invention. The code was broken by Leslie Linder, an engineer. Once the code was broken it took him seven years to decipher Beatrix Potter's journal. In the journal she details her attempts to have her theories and drawings noticed, usually to no avail. Perhaps if Beatrix Potter hadn't been so shy and if the male scientists at the Royal Botanical Gardens hadn't been so dismissive we would not have her legacy of Peter Rabbit.

Helen Beatrix Potter
Beatrix Potter was considered an amateur artist by some because of her lack of training, but her natural affection for animals and rich imagination made up for any deficiencies she may have had and manifested themselves through her illustrations. Although many of mice, rabbits, kittens and hedgehogs wore clothing, they still exhibited their specific animal traits while still reflecting on the life of children. Her illustrations are just as appealing today as they were ninety years ago. Childhood Helen Beatrix Potter was born on July 28, 1866 in Kensington Square, London, England to Rupert Potter and Helen Leech, but the name Helen was dropped so as not to confuse her with her mother. Both parents having an inheritance from the cotton trade, life in the Potter household was easy and in want for nothing. Rupert Potter was a non-practicing barrister and amateur photographer with influential friends such as Sir John Millais. Potter was virtually raised and educated by nurses and governesses with little interaction by her parents. She was relegated to the third floor nursery where she learned to cope with solitude by drawing and painting. Rupert Potter always had an interest in art and, on occasion, he would bring her to the museum or exhibits at the Royal Academy. The little creatures that she was allowed to keep became her only companions until her brother Bertram was born six years later.
Bertram shared her love for animals and nature, and together, they would draw and study them. At times they would even skin and dissect dead animals to further understand their skeletal structure. During the summer, the Potters would rent a house in the Scottish highlands or the Lake District of northern England. This was a time of great exploration and freedom for the Potter children, roaming the countryside, gathering plants, rocks, fossils and insects, to study and further their scientific knowledge. When Bertram was old enough, he was sent away to boarding school, leaving Potter as lonely as she had ever been. Sleepless nights were spent memorizing the plays of Shakespeare.

'Beatrix Potter'
Beatrix Potter was born on 28 July 1866 in South Kensington, London. She lived a lonely life at home, being educated by a governess and having little contact with other people. She had many animals which she kept as pets, studying them and making drawings. Her parents took her on three month summer holidays to Scotland, but when the house they rented became unavailable, they rented Wray Castle near Ambleside in the Lake District. Beatrix was 16 when they first stayed here. Her parents entertained many eminent guests, including Hardwicke Rawnsley vicar of Wray Church , who in 1895 was to become one of the founders of the National Trust. His views on the need to preserve the natural beauty of Lakeland had a lasting effect on the young Beatrix, who had fallen in love with the unspoilt beauty surrounding the holiday home. For the next 21 years on and off, the Potters holidayed in the Lake District, staying once at Wray Castle, once at Fawe Park , twice at Holehird and nine times at Lingholm , by Derwentwater , famous now for its rhododendron gardens. Beatrix loved Derwentwater, and explored Catbells behind Lingholm. She watched squirrels in the woods, saw rabbits in the vegetable gardens of the big house. She made many sketches of the landscape. They still kept in touch with Rev Rawnsley, who after 5 years at Wray, moved to
