91. Alexander Pope
Alexander Pope (1688—1744).
http://www.hmg.hu/irok/klasszic/pope.htm
A XVIII. század elsõ negyedében, amikor a fiatal, de máris nagy hírû Voltaire néhány évet töltött kényszerû emigrációban Londonban, el-eljárt Pope otthonába igazi, gondolatfrissítõ eszmecserére.

Alexander Pope Life. He was born in London of a Roman Catholic family and his father was rich enough. Alexander hadn't a proper school education because of his religion. He got very ill and this ruined his health, leaving him deformed in the body. Later in his life Pope met the famous critic William Walsh, who entered him the world of the London "Wits". His first publication in 1709 " Pastorals ", gave him fame. He met other writers like Jonathan Swift and found the Scriblerus Club . The members of this Club were against the dimwits (stupid persons) of the society. While his fame grew, he was attacked by the critics, especially by the Grub Street writers. Due to his religion he was never made Poet Laureate. He died on 30th May 1744. Literary Career. Pope's first publication "Pastorals" was based on classical models; but his first important work came in 1711, and was published anonymously: it was an "Essay on Criticism", largely influenced by Boiléau's Art Poetique. Pope's essay deals with nature and art. So he holds that nature must be imitated according to the example set by the ancients. satire of which three books were published anonimously in 1728.
