Edgar Allan Poe
ersonal tragedy was, unfortunately, a recurring theme throughout Edgar Allan Poe's life. Born in Boston in 1809 to actor parents, he never knew his father David Poe, who left his mother and disappeared soon after Edgar was born, then died in Virginia in 1810. His mother, who suffered from tuberculosis (then called consumption), died in Richmond, Virginia in late 1811, orphaning Edgar, his older brother William Henry, and half-sister Rosalie. Mrs. Frances Allan of Richmond convinced her wealthy merchant husband John Allan to take the child Edgar into his home. It was here that Edgar was to be raised, with his early influences being the stories of house slaves and the tales told by skippers and sea merchants. The dead and dying would always have a strong hold over Edgar, as demonstrated by the story that a six-year old Edgar was once "seized with terror" as he passed by a local graveyard, convinced that the spirits of the undead would run after him. In 1815, the family went to Scotland and England, where they lived for five years. Poe's schoolboy experiences there added further influences to the young writer's life. Once back in Richmond, Edgar began writing poetry regularly when he was in his early teens. He fell in love with a girl named Elmira, and they eventually pledged themselves to each other. In 1826 he was sent to the University of Virginia to study law. His rich foster father, with whom Edgar had always had a tumultuous relationship, gave him a mere $100 to cover yearly expenses that probably totaled to at least $450. Under these circumstances the young man quickly fell into debt, and began gambling in an attempt to make up his losses. On top of this, Elmira's letters to him had been intercepted by both sets of parents and, having received no encouraging replies from Edgar, she was persuaded to become engaged to another man. After this, Edgar began drinking seriously, he had little resistance to alcohol and easily became violent and irrational when he drank too much.

His inability to find work because of an economic depression and the fact that he was fired from the Southern Literary Messenger In 1844 Poe moved once again to New York City. Drinking marred the many opportunities that came his way. Also, Poe became a principal literary reviewer and was gaining a number of enemies. Poe, while working as a literary critic, offended Rufus Griswold (as he did many writers). Griswold worked hard to defame Poe, wanting the world to believe he was a drug addict, a drunkard, and insane. The magnetism of Poe, and his writings are definitely worth exploring!

When he came back to Richemond, he wrote his first lines for Helen, a friend's mother with whom he was in love. In 1826 he began attending University of Virginia but he left his studies the following year. He published Tamerlan and other Poems in 1827, represnting the Mongol Emperor as an outlaw. The following year he joins the army and he is sent to Sullivan Isalnd, where he writes The Gold Bug (1843). Thanks to Mr. Allan he gets a job in West Point and writes many poems.

The Raven
by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
" 'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door;
Only this, and nothing more." Ah, distinctly I remember, it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow, sorrow for the lost Lenore,. For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore, Nameless here forevermore. And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled me-filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating

Poe, Edgar Allan
Best known for his poems and short fiction, Edgar Allan Poe, born in Boston, Jan. 19, 1809 , died Oct. 7, 1849 in Baltimore, deserves more credit than any other writer for the transformation of the short story from anecdote to art. He virtually created the detective story and perfected the psychological thriller. He also produced some of the most influential literary criticism of his time important theoretical statements on poetry and the short story and has had a worldwide influence on literature.
Daguerreotype, 1848
Early Life and Work
Poe's parents, David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins, were touring actors; both died before he was 3 years old, and he was taken into the home of John Allan, a prosperous merchant in Richmond, Va., and baptized Edgar Allan Poe. His childhood was uneventful, although he studied (1815-20) for 5 years in England. In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia but stayed for only a year. Although a good student, he ran up large gambling debts that Allan refused to pay. Allan prevented his return to the university and broke off Poe's engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster, his Richmond sweetheart. Lacking any means of support, Poe enlisted in the army. He had, however, already written and printed (at his own expense) his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), verses written in the manner of Byron.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) One the greatest and unhappiest of American poets, a master of the horror tale, patron saint to the practitioners of the detective story. Poe's stormy personal life postponed honest evaluation of his work in the United States - first he gained critical acclaim in France and England. His reputation in America was relatively slight until the French-influenced writers like Ambroce Bierce, Robert W. Chambers, and representatives of the Lovecraft school secured his place in the literary hall of fame. "The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends and where the other begins?" (from The Premature Burial Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to parents who were itinerant actors. His father David Poe Jr. died probably in 1810 and his mother Elizabeth Hopkins Poe in 1811, leaving three children, of whom William died young and Rosalie ultimately lost her mind. Edgar was taken into the home of a Richmond merchant John Allan and brought up partly in England (1815-20), where he attended Manor School at Stoke Newington. Never legally adopted, Poe took Allan's name for his middle name. Poe attended the University of Virginia (1826), but was expelled for not paying his gambling debts. This led to quarrel with Allan, who later disowned him. In 1827 Poe joined the U.S. Army as a common soldier under assumed name and age. He was sent to Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, which provided settings for 'The Gold Bug' (1843) and 'The Balloon Hoax' (1844). In 1830 Poe entered West Point and was dishonorably discharged next year, for intentional neglect of his duties - apparently as a result of his own determination to be released.

Edgar Allan Poe, 1809 - 1849 Born January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts, Edgar Allan Poe was a Romantic American poet, critic, and short story writer whose name has become synonymous with mystery, horror, and the macabre in fiction. In 1811, when Poe was only two years old, his parents died; leaving him to be raised by John Allan, a Richmond, Virginia merchant. Eventually, Poe attended the University of Virginia for a short time. In 1827, he published a pamphlet in Boston that contained "youthful Byronic poems," as well as his poem "Tamerlane." Then, in 1833, he won $50 from a Baltimore, Maryland weekly for his short story, Ms. Found in a Bottle. In 1835, Poe became the editor of the Southern Literary Messanger in Richmond, Virginia. This was the first of serveral periodicals that Poe wrote for and/or edited. In addition to his editor's position, it was also in 1835 that Poe married his 13 year-old cousin Virgina Clemm. Then in 1839, Poe became co-editor of Burton's Gentleman's Magazine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While he was co-editor there (1839-1842), Poe produced some of his best-known writings of supernatural horror. In 1845, while part of the staff at the
