Welcome to Egger's World Click here for a
contents map of this site Eggers' World , the website, introduces you to the world of the egg artist. Artists have cut, carved, etched, batiked, decoupaged, painted and applied beads and jewels to egg shells over the past century. All kinds of shells, including those of the ostrich, rhea and emu, have been made into jewelry boxes, eggs with scenes, music boxes, brooches, pendants and even kaleidescopes. Hard to imagine? Well, take a moment to peruse our Gallery and see the various exhibits. You can even purchase an egg or two if you'd like! If you find you'd like to learn more about how to make these eggs yourself, check out Eggers' World , the publication. It features interviews of accomplished egg artists, instruction sheets, information on egg shows, lists of suppliers, advertisements and more. A sample issue is here for you to examine and past issues can be ordered as well. You can also learn more about egg art by joining the Internet Eggers' Mailing List or meeting egg artists every Saturday evening for a live chat.

Ophthalmologist to the ocean's sharks
A Florida doctor examines the eyes of wild, live sharks to understand how the feared creatures see the world, and how we see them
By Mitzi Perdue
Scripps Howard News Service The sharks Dr. Stanley Spielman examines can be 12 feet in length, with mouths as wide as garbage cans. It seems like a lifetime ago now, but before Sept. 11 the two subjects over which the nation's media had been obsessing about for months were ... do you remember? First, Rep. Gary Condit, and second, the Florida shark attacks. The Florida shark attacks still fascinate Dr. Stanley Spielman, a Florida ophthalmologist. Spielman is one of the few people on Earth brave enough and curious enough to have examined the eyes of live sharks underwater while in the wild. How did he do it? And perhaps more important, why? Shark wrangler and doctor To answer the first question first, Spielman and his associates start by catching sharks in the open ocean, using fishing lines. Once they've caught a shark, they attach a hook to its mouth.

National/US: How to Save 60,000 Lives a Year
February 23, 1999 MITZI PERDUE: Saving 60,000 lives annually Are you ready for an extraordinary statistic? Dr. John Graham from the Harvard School of Public Health says that if we allocated our treatment and prevention resources more wisely, we could save 60,000 lives a year in this country alone. To get an appreciation for the stakes involved, remember that 40,000 people a year die of AIDS in this country each year and 48,000 die in traffic accidents. "Imagine a pill," Graham says, "that would eliminate the equivalent of all of the AIDS deaths or all the traffic deaths." Graham and his colleague, Tammy Tengs from the University of California at Irvine, have been studying what really works - and what doesn't work - when it comes to keeping us safe and healthy. The results are surprising. "We investigated 500 programs," Graham says, "and we learned that some are highly effective: vaccinating children for mumps or rubella, painting edge lines on rural highways or taking the lead out of gasoline." On the other hand, the data show that a number of programs accomplish very little while costing a great deal. Included in the list: reducing exposure to radiation from nuclear waste storage facilities or power plants, or reducing further the already minute amounts of pesticides in our foods.

A Tribute to Jacques-Yves Cousteau
Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a man revered by a whole generation as an ecologist, conservationist, and protector of the Earth’s oceans. To the people who watched his programs, he brought fascination, wonder and a sense of awe. He taught them how to protect the world and enlightened them about the mysteries of the deep, while exploring new depths and places day-in and day-out. His mere name brought a smile to the public and from them, Jacques Cousteau was given life’s greatest fulfillment of knowing he did all he could at whatever task confronted him. He fought illness, disasters, lack of money, and even the death of his son to bring viewers a message, and for that, he was admired by all for his courage.
I became interested in Jacques Cousteau only after his death. I was born too late to be mesmerized by his television shows, and I never saw any of his movies on PBS or any other channel. I knew who he was, but I never knew of his accomplishments nor his love for the sea. To me he was just another person sailing around on a boat with no importance. I did not discover marine biology till I was in the fifth grade, yet even then I did not pursue what Jacques Cousteau lived for and did. After his death I began to learn a little and found that there was more to this man and his shows than I ever saw. I learned he was in World War II and was a decorated veteran. He wrote many books, produced many films, and created many television programs. He even met several United States’ Presidents throughout his journeys. Our birthdays are also only hours apart, although he has lived 72 years more than I.

The environment and you: Hummingbirds aid in study of antioxidants and diabetes
Tuesday, August 29, 2000 By MITZI PERDUE, Scripps Howard News Service When you look at a hummingbird, you probably see a charming little bird that seems to hover. When Dr. Hillar Klandorf looks at a hummingbird, he sees something entirely different. For him, as an associate professor of physiology at West Virginia University, a hummingbird represents a tantalizing medical paradox. Hummingbirds, like all other birds, have what would be a deadly medical condition if they were mammals. Nevertheless, birds live much longer than mammals of comparable size.

Monkeys make bad pets

By MITZI PERDUE
Scripps Howard News Service - Infant monkeys are adorable and in many ways like human babies. Still, if you ever have the urge to buy one for a pet, April Truitt has some important advice for you: Don't. Truitt is the founder of the Primate Rescue Center (PRC) and knows why buying a pet monkey would be a seriously bad idea. Before we get to her reasons, though, why would anyone want a pet monkey? The answer is that, in some circles, at least, a pet monkey is a status symbol. And people who long for children or who are going through empty-nest syndrome sometimes feel that a baby monkey could fill the gap. The result is that hundreds of people in this country pay anywhere from $3,000 for a capuchin monkey to $40,000 for a female chimpanzee. It's legal to do it and you can find infant monkeys for sale on the Internet. However, if you do buy one of these animals it's just about guaranteed that you'll regret it. As Truitt says, "The media portrays them as substitute humans, but what you don't see is that these animals are capable of inflicting horrendous damage." If you're not familiar with the innate drives of monkeys, it may surprise you to know that their capacity for doing "horrendous damage" is hard-wired into them. It's the result of the monkey's hierarchical nature.
