making something out of nothing. Main December 14, 2002 project pepys I am working away from home and living in hotel rooms. Today I'm in NYC. It can be argued that Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) is the 'Godfather of Blog,' perhaps the Western world's most famous Diarist. But my question is: What ever happened to the Pepys surname? I never had any friends with the last name Pepys that I can recall. Even in my many travels to England and other Commonwealth countries, I have never come across anyone with the last name of Pepys. So here I am in Manhattan, and I decide to open up the phone book and see if there are any Pepys's listed. I mean, there are a lot of people (peeps!) crammed in New York City - it's a huge phone book. There has got to be maybe one or two Pepys's, right? WRONG! It skips from PEPSOSKI, Tracy straight to PEQUENO, P . Nary a Pepys in sight! So I think to myself, "Well, maybe those really old names somehow got phased out or changed over time." So I decide to look up the surname Shakespeare. Again - I've never personally known anyone with the last name Shakespeare, and it hails from roughly the same era in England as Pepys. So let's test the theory. I furiously flip through the Manhattan White Pages and I find NO LESS THAN 6 Shakespeares living in NYC! To wit:

REMEMBERING A LOVED ONE WITH MOURNING JEWELRY
by Susan and Jim Harran
for AntiqueWeek
Dec 1997
Mourning jewelry mirrored the lives and times of the people who wore it. It
was a souvenir to remember a loved one, a reminder to the living of the
inevitability of death, and a status symbol, especially during the Victorian
era.
The earliest examples of mourning jewelry were found in Europe in the 15th
and 16th centuries. Black and white enameled heads or skulls were often set
into rings and brooches. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was a status symbol to present mourning rings to friends and families of the bereaved. Mourning jewelry reached its height of popularity in England after the death of Prince Albert in December 1861. Queen Victoria went into deep mourning, which was imitated by her subjects when faced with their own bereavements. Following Albert's premature death, Queen Victoria ordered that his dressing room at Windsor Castle remain exactly as he left it. His clothes were laid out every night, and hot water prepared for nightly ablutions. The queen slept with a photo of the head and shoulders of Albert taken as he lay dead.

is calling the works of Samuel Pepys The Junior Woodchuck Guide to The Lost Art of Bloggery I wrote a bit about Samuel Pepys in The Writing Renaissance and mentioned him again the other day in This Blog Thing . I like to think of Samuel Pepys and Samuel Johnson Dr. Johnson ) as the Godfathers of Blog or Blogfathers, if you will. In fact, I'm seriously considering adding Pepys's Diary to my blogrolling list. Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) maintained a detailed daily diary for 10 years, covering 1659 to 1669. The diary, written in code, is the most extensive source of information on "The Restoration" in England. Because Pepys was an up-and-coming young civil servant, he was in a position to record a number of historical events with an insider's view. Pepys is considered to be the first great modern bureaucrat, and was the founder of the professional navy in England. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) gave up teaching to become a hack writer for Gentleman's Magazine . He then went on to start his own his own periodical

Samuel Pepys - A Brief Biography
The Complete Diary Hinchingbrooke House Samuel Pepys was born on February 23rd 1633 in Salisbury Court off Fleet Street. His father, John, was a tailor, his mother Margaret Kite was sister of a Whitechapel butcher and Samuel was fifth in a line of eleven children. By origin the Pepyses were country folk who, from the 13th century onwards had held land around Cottenham in Cambridgeshire, including the manor of Impington. In 1618 Paulina Pepys married a brother of the 1st Earl of Manchester, Sir Sydney Mountagu, who in 1627 had acquired the house and estate of Hinchingbrooke , near Huntingdon. Samuel was sent off to Huntingdonshire in 1642 to live with his uncle, Robert Pepys of Brampton, who served in the household of his relatives, the Mountagus of Hinchingbrooke. He moved to Brampton from London because of his health and fears of The Plague (from which several of his brothers died) and the house where he lived still stands between Brampton and Hinchingbrooke (see left).

Samuel Pepys 1633 - 1703
Famous diarist lived in Greenwich 1665 - 1666
Samuel Pepys begun his diary on 1 January 1660 and continued writing it until May 1669, when he was too blind to write. He was a frequent visitor to Greenwich in his official capacity as 'clerk of the Acts' for the Navy. The famous diarist lived in Greenwich 1665 - 1666 and was a great friend of John Evelyn , a fellow diarist. The royal dockyards at Deptford and Woolwich, adjacent to Greenwich are frequently mentioned. It was a private diary written in code and not intended for publication. 4 March 1664: " ... at Greenwich, did observe the foundation laying of a very great house for the King, which will cost a great deal of money" (this was to become Greenwich Hospital
The Black Death
24 August 1665: At Greenwich, "dined very well and thence to look at our rooms at the Kings' House, which were not yet ready for us". Later that year: "walked to Greenwich, in my way seeing a coffin with a dead body therein, dead of the plague, laying in an open close to Combe Farm, which was carried out last night, and the parish have not appointed anybody to bury it...this disease making us more cruel to one another than if we were dogs".

But Pepys was perhaps the ultimate civil servant - and the way he set about improving the Royal Navy led to him becoming MP for Harwich in 1679 and again from 1685-87.
