PEARSON MSS.
The Pearson mss., 1907-1935, consist primarily of letters written by Edmund Lester Pearson, 1880-1937, librarian, to Edwin Francis Edgett, 1867-1946, journalist. They refer to a weekly column, "The Librarian," in the Boston Evening Transcript by Pearson, which evoked indignant letters to George Snell Mandell. A number of the letters deal with famous criminal cases among which is that of Lizzie Andrew Borden. Several letters are about book reviews, the Plattsburg training camp during World War I, and personal matters. Other correspondents include Clarence Walter Ayer, Charles Francis Dorr Belden, Charles Knowles Bolton, Gamaliel Bradford, John Foster Can, John Cotton Dana, Matthew Simpson Dudgeon, Gardner Maynard Jones, Grant Martin Overton and Samuel Minturn Peck. The Pearson mss. III, 1971-1986, consist primarily of correspondence, 1971-1976, of librarian Norman D. Stevens seeking information about librarian Edmund Lester Pearson, 1880-1937. Also present are photocopies of Pearson's letters to Mrs. Case relating to murders in which Pearson was interested, a copy of "Edmund Lester Pearson: Preliminary Checklist" (1973), and three photographs: two of Pearson's home as taken in 1986 and one of his headstone, also 1986. Mr. Stevens prepared the article on Pearson in Dictionary of American Literary Biography.
