(assembled by Jan Bond) These are only some of Australia’s most well-known writers. I have marked the titles of books you should be able to enjoy with “***” A. B. ("Banjo") Paterson (1864-1941) Andrew Barton Paterson was born in New South Wales in 1864. After the publication of The Man From Snowy River and Other Verses in 1895, he became something of a literary celebrity in Australia. Paterson is best remembered as the author of Waltzing Matilda - Australia's unofficial national anthem. A film was made of his poem, The Man From Snowy River. Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922) Henry Lawson was born on the goldfields in New South Wales on 17 June, 1867, the son of a Norwegian seaman and an activist for women's rights. Lawson suffered from deafness and was often teased as a result. He led a troubled life but is one of Australia’s best-known and loved early writers. There are many collections of his poems and short stories. Henry Handel Richardson (1870 – 1946) Henry Handel Richardson was the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson. She was born in Melbourne, Victoria where she attended Presbyterian Ladies College between the ages of 13 and 17. This experience was the basis for her novel The Getting of Wisdom (***). There is an excellent film of this book.

Past masters of metrical perfection speak to modern-day aspirants of the art, and anyone else with ears to hear. The Revelations of Devout and Learn'd Who rose before us, and as Prophets burn'd, Are all but Stories, which, awoke from Sleep, They told their fellows, and to Sleep return'd. LVII. When You and I behind the Veil are past, Oh but the long long while the World shall last, Which of our Coming and Departure heeds As much as Ocean of a pebble-cast. LX. TO A POET A THOUSAND YEARS HENCE by James Elroy Flecker (British, 1884 - 1915) I who am dead a thousand years, And wrote this sweet archaic song, Send you my words for messengers The way I shall not pass along. I care not if you bridge the seas, Or ride secure the cruel sky, Or build consummate palaces Of metal or of masonry. But have you wine and music still, And statues and bright-eyed love, And foolish thoughts of good and ill, And prayers to them who sit above? How shall we conquer? Like a wind That falls at eve our fancies blow, And old Maeonides the blind Said it three thousand years ago. O friend unseen, unborn, unknown, Student of our sweet English tongue, Read out my words at night, alone: I was a poet, I was young. Since I can never see your face, And never shake you by the hand, I send my soul through time and space To greet you. You will understand!

Some of my favorites are being written today, not by the recognized poets of our time but by people I know and respect. Meanwhile, here are ten timeless treasures that I've loved longer, if not better. As much as I dearly enjoy humor-oriented light verse, you won't see any of it in this line-up, nor will you see any highbrow. Each poem listed below is one that is special to me either because of the familiarity of growing up with it, or because it has deeply touched my emotions in some way, or even simply because I love the sound of it. I hope you'll find one or all of these to be memorable for reasons of your own. (After you've finished exploring TenderBytes.Net, you might like to click here for some of my current favorites.)

Australian Currency and its history
With the establishment of the first colony of New South Wales in 1788, the need for currency soon became apparent. Convicts received no wages and the early settlers and military personnel had their needs supplied from communal stores. With only a small quantity of English and foreign coins brought with the First Fleet, most of the dealings in the first few years consisted of bartering, with rum being the main means of exchange. Handwritten notes of credit, issued by government officials and backed by the English treasury, were a common form of currency, but these were subject to counterfeiting and devaluation. The earliest currency used was English money, and also the Spanish dollar brought by the early ships. Because of the shortage of English money, and to prevent the Spanish dollars being taken back on the ships, Governor Macquarie had their centres cut out and they became known as 'holey dollars', while the cores became 'dumps'. In 1813 they had "New South Wales 1813" stamped on them, with "Five Shillings" on the reverse side. The 'dump' had "New South Wales 1813" stamped on their cleaned and smoothed surface with "Fifteen Pence" on the reverse side. In 1817 the Bank of New South Wales was established. The first issue of banknotes comprised five shillings, ten shillings, one pound and five pounds and paper tokens for one shilling, one shilling and sixpence, two shillings, and two shillings and sixpence. In 1825 the British Government imposed the sterling standard throughout its Empire and English coins were minted in Australia.

It is not possible to do justice to the life and time of "A B" in the space available and at the same time keep the readers interest over a few monitor screens. As such, what follows is an all but too brief overview of the man to whom the swagman/shearers of the 1890's, and those of us who have followed them, owe a great debt. Banjo has immortalised the Australian spirit in a song for what ever reason has been braced by the nation as typically Australian. Although the greater percentage of Australians had, or may still have, no idea what the song really meant or why it was written, they could still identify with the ethos of a fair go . Compared with some of our other famous poets and the tragic situations connected with them, Paterson seems to have led a charmed life.

He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and then studied law at the Sydney University and for thirty four years until 1900 he practised law in Sydney. OUR NEW HORSE by A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson
The boys had come back from the races All silent and down on their luck; They'd backed 'em, straight out and for places, But never a winner they struck. They lost their good money on Slogan, And fell most uncommonly flat When Partner, the pride of the Bogan, Was beaten by Aristocrat.
And one said, "I move that instanter We sell out our horses and quit; The brutes ought to win in a canter, Such trials they do when they're fit. The last one they ran was a snorter A gallop to gladden one's heart Two-twelve for a mile and a quarter, And finished as straight as a dart.
"And then when I think that they're ready To win me a nice little swag, They are licked like the veriest neddy They're licked from the fall of the flag. The mare held her own to the stable, She died out to nothing at that, And Partner he never seemed able To pace it with Aristocrat.
"And times have been bad, and the seasons Don't promise to be of the best; In short, boys, there's plenty of reasons For giving the racing a rest. The mare can be kept on the station Her breeding is good as can be But Partner, his next destination Is rather a trouble to me.
"We can't sell him here, for they know him As well as the clerk of the course; He's raced and won races till, blow him, He's done as a handicap horse. A jady, uncertain performer, They weight him right out of the hunt, And clap it on warmer and warmer Whenever he gets near the front.

June 2000 Volume X Number 9 Patricia Clarke reveals the family connections between poet A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson and novelist Rosa Praed I nterconnecting relationships between major families in the small world of colonial Australia are commonplace to historians researching nineteenth-century material. But literary links? Who would expect a family connection between Australia's great balladist, 'Banjo' Paterson, and Rosa Praed, the first Australian-born novelist to achieve a significant international reputation? The link was Nora Murray-Prior, one of the 'hidden' pioneer women of our colonial era, who nurtured her network of relatives through letters. In strikingly direct and fluent prose, interspersed with acerbic comments on the issues of the day, Nora kept the branches of her family, whether on far-flung stations or in city suburbs, informed of the doings of others. Portrait of Rosa Campbell Praed Reproduced from the frontispiece of My Australian Girlhood: Sketches and Impressions of Bush Life by Mrs Campbell Praed (London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1902)

by A. B. ('Banjo') Paterson (1864 - 1941)
I had written him a letter which I had, for want of better
Knowledge, sent to where I met him down the Lachlan, years ago,
He was shearing when I knew him, so I sent the letter to him,
Just "on spec", addressed as follows, "Clancy, of The Overflow" And an answer came directed in a writing unexpected,
(And I think the same was written with a thumb-nail dipped in tar)
'Twas his shearing mate who wrote it, and verbatim I will quote it:
"Clancy's gone to Queensland droving, and we don't know where he are." In my wild erratic fancy visions come to me of Clancy
Gone a-droving "down the Cooper" where the Western drovers go;
As the stock are slowly stringing, Clancy rides behind them singing,
For the drover's life has pleasures that the townsfolk never know. And the bush hath friends to meet him, and their kindly voices greet him In the murmur of the breezes and the river on its bars, And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended, And at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars.
