Francis Parkman
Excerpted from White on Red , Eds. Black, Nancy B. and Bette S. Wiedman, New York; Kennikat Press, 1976. Introduction: As a Harvard undergraduate, Francis Parkman had already decided on his life's worka history of the French, British and Indians in America. In the summer of 1845 he traveled west with a friend; among Pawnees and Sioux, he hoped to gather firsthand impressions for his history. In 1849 he published The Oregon Trail , an account of this trip based on his journals. Despite a lifetime of physical sufferingnervous ailments, lameness, increasing blindnessParkman persisted in his task, turning out eight volumes of his history, a book on rose culture, and a novel. He was professor of horticulture at Harvard and a founder of the Archaeological Institute of America. By birth and education Parkman was a Boston Brahmin; his youthful arrogance and detachment kept him from fully expressing the pleasure he took in living among the Sioux. Marked in all of his work, even as early as The Oregon Trail , is a quality of unromantic pessimism. This book illustrates the strength of his objective description of Indian manners, his snobbism, and his attraction to wilderness scenes.

Pertinent Texts and Images in the 19th Century
As stated in the Introduction , representations of American Indians in nineteenth century literature were seldom culturally relative. The authors failed to understand American Indians within the context of their separate cultures; instead, Indians became homogenized as the alien "Other," treated in terms of one of two polarizations: as the essentialized ideal, or the degenerated demon. While Cooper and Twain are icons on either end of the nineteenth century, acting as beacons for this polarization, there is a wide range of nineteenth-century authors whose characterizations of American Indians fall within this spectrum of polarization. The following is not an exhaustive list, but a brief outline of major nineteenth century authors who approached the subject of American Indians in their work. In his fiction such as The Sketch Book , Washington Irving (1783-1859) allegedly developed a romantic portraiture of the Native American. In the following excerpt, Irving identifies American Indians with nature and lavishes praise upon their "natural" state: "There is something in the character and traits of the north American savage taken in connection with the scenery over which he is accustomed to range, its vast lakes, boundless forest, majestic rivers, and trackless plains that is, to my mind, wonderfully striking and sublime..." (qtd. in Zolla 97). Fort Okanogan as it appeared in the 1850's, by John Mix Stanley. Choosen to illustrate Irving's text

    The Oregon Trail
    Author Info: Francis Parkman
On April 28, 1846, Francis Parkman, who had already decided that he was going to write the history of the settling of America, and Quincy Adams Shaw set forth from St. Louis up the Missouri River for a "tour of curiosity and amusement to the Rocky Mountains." They traveled some 1700 miles, meeting trappers, gamblers, woodsmen, soldiers and Indians and Parkman eventually spent three weeks hunting buffalo with a band of Oglala Sioux. The following year he published this travelogue which remains one of the great books ever produced by an American and embarked him on a career as one of Americaís first great historians. Deslauriers was a Canadian, with all the characteristics of the true Jean Baptiste. Neither fatigue,
exposure, nor hard labor could ever impair his cheerfulness and gayety, or his politeness to his
bourgeois; and when night came, he would sit down by the fire, smoke his pipe, and tell stories
with the utmost contentment. The prairie was his element. Henry Chatillon was of a different
