Sir William Osler
1994 Inductee
William Osler finished his M.D. at McGill University, buoyed along by a dynamic personality and immense personal magnetism. After further studies in London, Berlin and Vienna, Osler returned to McGill with definite ideas on how clinical medicine could work more efficiently and with a greater human touch. It took less than ten years of outstanding work at McGill before Osler was successfully courted by the Universiry of Pennsylvania. The administration at Penn gave Osler carte blanche to develop clinical medicine as he saw fit. Five years later, he was given the same mandate by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Osler led a generation of young doctors away from the textbooks and directly to the bedsides of the afflicted. For many years, his textbook on medicine "Modern Medicine" was the standard text. He finished a brilliant career as Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford as Sir William Osler, a baronet.

Sir William Osler
Sir William Osler was an ideal physician: a master of the science and art of medicine, a lover of humanity, and totally devoted to healing as a sacred calling. - Michael Bliss, Historian and Author Picture from http://www.medcor.mcgill.ca/~oslerweb/history.html Born in Bond Head, Ontario, Sir William Osler achieved international recognition as the most influential teacher of medicine and most brilliant medical historian and physician. Osler began his medical education at the University of Toronto in 1868 and completed his training at McGill University in 1872 with post-graduate studies in London, Vienna, and Berlin. Osler believed medicine was a progressive science and his enthusiasm for learning influenced his students to reach for the top through ongoing education and research. Osler was one of the first to appreciate the interaction between body systems. He was an expert in the diagnosis of diseases of the heart, lungs, and blood. His progressive attitude toward holistic medicine led to the building of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. One of the new ideas Osler introduced was teaching students in the hospital environment rather than in the classroom. He was the first educator to bring medical students into hospitals for a new approach approach to medical training.

Canadian Medicine: Doctors and Discoveries Part I Doctors, Celebrated and Unsung Any study of Canadian medical history must begin with the two most celebrated nineteenth century Canadian doctors - Sir William Osler and Dr. Emily Stowe . Osler recast the practice of medicine by going to the patient's bedside and blending the science of medicine with the art of healing. Stowe challenged the assumption that medicine was a man's career. Traditionally, women have always played a role in healing as midwives, nurses, or family caretakers. Overcoming tremendous obstacles, Stowe was the first Canadian woman to practice medicine in Canada. Many other less renowned physicians practised medicine in the rural and frontier areas of Canada, bringing new treatments and therapies to their patients while facing challenges of travel, weather, and professional isolation. The Doctor's Doctor: Sir William Osler In the nineteenth century, one of the most famous physicians in the world was a Canadian - Sir William Osler (1849-1919). During the course of his professional career, Osler worked in three countries - Canada, the United States and England - all of which claim him as their own. While it is undisputed that Osler was a brilliant, innovative physician and teacher, adored by his students and patients, he did not make any great medical discovery. It was the way he practiced medicine and taught medicine that was so remarkable. He wrote the first great textbook of modern medicine, The Principles and Practice of Medicine

Inauguration of Promenade Sir William Osler October 28, 1999 Beginning this morning, the top of Drummond Street no longer ends at the foot of Mount Royal. For today, Montreal Mayor Pierre Bourque and McGill University Chancellor Richard W. Pound unveiled a plaque designating as Promenade Sir-William-Osler the upper section of the street. It is here that one of the buildings, the McIntyre Medical Sciences Building of McGill University, houses the Osler Library (History of Medicine). "The world famous Osler Library (History of Medicine) is unique in Canada. It is treasures like these that enrich the intellectual life of the city," emphasized Mayor Bourque in response to Principal Shapiro and Dean of Medicine Abraham Fuks, who outlined the life and career of Dr Osler. This year is the 150th anniversary of the birth of this giant of modern medicine. In his speech, Principal Shapiro noted that "One of the great distinctions of the McGill Faculty of Medicine is to have trained William Osler, to have perceived his talents as a clinician and as a teacher and to have launched his brilliant career by granting him a chair when he was only twenty-six years of age." It was as a professor at McGill from 1875 to 1884 that Osler integrated biology and the microscope with clinical pathology.

    A Life in Medicine
    MICHAEL BLISS

A compelling biography of one of the greatest physicians in the history of medicine

William Osler was born in a parsonage in backwoods Canada on July 12, 1849. In a life lasting seventy years, he practiced, taught, and wrote about medicine at Canada's McGill University, America's Johns Hopkins University, and finally as Regius Professor at Oxford. At the time of his death in England in 1919, many considered him to be the greatest doctor in the world. Osler, who was a brilliant, innovative teacher and a scholar of the natural history of disease, revolutionized the art of practicing medicine at the bedside of his patients. He was idolized by two generations of medical students and practitioners for whom he came to personify the ideal doctor. But much more than a physician, Osler was a supremely intelligent humanist. In both his writings and his personal life, and through the prism of the tragedy of the Great War, he embodied the art of living. It was perhaps his legendary compassion that elevated his healing talents to an art form and attracted to his private practice students, colleagues, poets (Walt Whitman for example) politicians, royalty, and nameless ordinary people with extraordinary conditions. William Osler's life lucidly illuminates the times in which he lived. Indeed, this is a book not only about the evolution of modern medicine, the training of doctors, holism in medical thought, and the doctor-patient relationship, but also about humanism, Victorianism, the Great War, and much else. Meticulously researched, drawing on many new sources and offering new interpretations
