For India has carried and scattered the data of intellectual progress for the whole world, ever since the pre-Buddhist period when she produced the Sankhya philosophy and the atomic theory; the fifth century, when her mathematics and astronomy find their blossom in Arya Bhatta; the seventh when Brahmagupta uses his highly-developed Algebra and makes astronomical observations; the twelfth, brilliant with the glory of Bhaskaracharya, and his famous daughter, down to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries themselves with Ram Chandra the mathematician and Jagdish Chandra Bose the physicist. Okakura adds that in this scientific age: India had faith "Such a faith in its early energy and enthusiasm was the natural incentive to that great scientific age which was to produce astronomers like Aryabhatta, discovering the revolution of the earth on its own axis, and his not less illustrious successor Varamihira; who brought Hindu medicine to its height, perhaps under Susruta; and which finally gave to Arabia the knowledge with which she was later to fructify Europe.

Okakura Kakuzo and the Production of the Japan Discourse in the Early Twentieth-Century United States
Christiana Reinhold
Introduction
Okakura Kakuzo's (1862-1913) works, published in the first decade of the twentieth century both in the United States and Great Britain, sought to address the dearth in dependable information about Japan. Okakura is indeed one of the more reliable transmitters of Japanese culture of the time. A renowned and internationally acclaimed collector and historian of the arts of East Asia, Okakura's works, especially The Book of Tea (1905), are still today consulted in regard to matters of Japanese aestheticism. To read Okakura only for his insight into Japanese art, however, is to miss out on an entirely different dimension to Okakura that earned him the designation of being "Japan's first pan-Asian ideologue." Okakura's literary output as well as those products by "Japan experts" that are discussed below, are part of a deluge of books on Japan that were published during and immediately in the wake of the Russo-Japanese War (1904/5). A contemporary reviewer of The Literary Digest (New York) attributed the sudden demand for information about the "Orient," and specifically about Japan, to the long-time interest in and amazement over Japan's rapid modernization.

by Kakuzo Okakura Written at the turn of the last century and first published in 1883, when there was a strong tendency in Japan towards equating western culture with enlightenment, the author counters with an appreciation of the Japanese sense of beauty, values and way of thinking through this history of Japanese art. His point of view remains fresh and valid today. Okakura (1862-1913) worked with Ernest F. Fenollosa to found the Tokyo Fine Art School, now known as Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He later became Curator of the Department of Oriental Art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

    RELIGION
There exists two main religions in Japan, Shintô and Buddhism. Most of the Japanese practices both of the two religions because they are not in opposition. There is also a little part of Japanese people that pratice Christianity.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A BUDDHIST TEMPLE AND A SHRINE (shintô sanctuary) Well, to the entry of shrine, you have, in general, the Torii (portico in woods). The legend tells that the cock of the village has to perch there to call Amaterasu, the goddess of the Sun. If you see a plaited straw cord above the door of entry, be sure, it is a Shintô shrine.
SHINTO (voice of gods) It is the most ancient religion, it is based on the cult of Kamis (gods), linked to the nature (centenary trees, mountains, rocks) and also often on ancient hero of the history (as our holy Christians). Before to come into the Temple, you have to purify yourself with water. This custom exists also for the Bouddhist religion. One take water with a big spoon and you wash your hands, your feet and even your mouth if you want. When you arrive to the entry of the sanctuary, you must ring the bell or claps several times in your hands to attract the attention of the

The Inspiration of Nature: Frank Lloyd Wright and Japan
By Margo Stipe Frank Lloyd Wright at the entrance of Taliesin III with Japanese doors, 1955 Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation (Photography by John Engstead) Art, to be fully appreciated, must be true to contemporaneous life. It is not that we should ignore the claims of posterity, but that we should seek to enjoy the present more...Slavish conformity to traditions and formulas fetters the expression of the individuality in architecture...We marvel why, among the most progressive Western nations, architecture should be so devoid of originality, so replete with repetitions of obsolete styles. Perhaps we are now passing through an age of democratisation in art, while awaiting the rise of some princely master who shall establish a new dynasty. (Okakura, p. 67-68). Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) has been called `simply the greatest artist [America] has ever produced in any field of the visual or musical arts' (Campbell, p. 6). In addition, he was perhaps the greatest architect of the twentieth century, the father of the modern and creator of some of the century's most innovative and honoured buildings, including the Frederick C. Robie house in Chicago (1908), the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo (1916-22), Fallingwater, the Edgar J. Kaufmann house in Bear Run, Pennsylvania (1936), the Solomon R. Recordemos que Hans Arp estudió las estructuras de los objetos naturales para "descubrir rasgos expresivos nuevos en el alma del mundo", mientras Ernst consideraba que sus frottages pertenecían al campo de lo psíquico pues ofrecían fantasmas a la contemplación.
