Muir's Tours John Muir John Muir - our namesake
John Muir (1838-1914) is the founder of the modern world conservation movement. Over two hundred sites in the USA are named after him including Muir Woods, Muir Beach, Muir Glacier and the John Muir Trail through the High Sierra.
Born in the fishing port of Dunbar, near Edinburgh, he developed an early awareness of the value of wild nature. At the age of eleven, he emigrated to the USA. He achieved fame as a botanist, geologist and glaciologist, amongst other things. He saw the damage that was being done to nature and predicted the sad state of affairs - the sanctuary of the wild places, lost forever. He pioneered what we now call Ecology.
He led the campaign for the protection of Yosemite and deeply influenced various presidents in designating over 50 areas and 200 national monuments. Muir set up the Sierra Club, which today is one of the leading environmental campaigning organisations in the world. Campaigning and writing over one hundred years ago, Muir could not foresee ozone depletion, or global warming, but today his conservation imperative cuts to the heart of current concerns over the sustainability of the world's natural resources and systems.

John Muir and Wisconsin
(The above picture reproduced from sierraclub.org. Picture John Muir, (1838-1914), was a American naturalist, explorer, and writer. He was an influential conservationist, who worked to preserve wilderness areas and wildlife from commercial exploitation and destruction. His efforts helped to establish Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park, both in California. Muir was born in Scotland in 1838. His family immigrated to the United States in 1849 when he was 11 years old and settled on a farm near Portage, Wisconsin. "The Story of My Boyhood and Youth " describes his early years in rural Montello. Muir attended the University of Wisconsin from 1860 to 1863 but did not graduate. When he left college, he took extensive walking trips to study nature, especially plants. In 1867 he made a walking trip from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico to observe the plants, animals, and physical features of the country. During this trip Muir kept extensive journals, which were published after his death as

JOHN MUIR was a naturalist, an author and an adventurer. He loved to "go to wild places" go experience the wonders of nature. Alaska, like Yosemite in California, was one of Muir's favorite places. Alaska is where Muir came to visit real wilderness after Yosemite became popular. The Chilkat Valley, where the City of Haines, Alaska now exists, was one of the favorite stops he made, largely because of the interaction he was able to have with the "Northern tribe," the Chilkat Tlingits. The Chilkat Tlingits still live in Haines and the beautiful Chilkat Valley.

Reviews "An imaginative, beautifully written biography." New York Times "Allows the reader to follow [Muir's] progression from a young vagabond to the crony of presidents...a biography as shapely as its subject's life." Washington Post "Splendid and passionately written...a tour de force." Library Journal Description In his stirring biography, Frederick Turner, the distinguished writer and cultural historian, captures the legendary scale of the life of an American icon. Immigrant, inventor, botanist, and founder of the conservation movement, John Muir (1838-1914) truly led those of his time-and now ours-to rediscover the natural beauty of this land. From his harsh childhood in Scotland and on a Wisconsin pioneer farm, to his rugged, solitary explorations all over America and especially in the Sierras, to his passionate battle, in person and in his writings, to save and celebrate our wilderness, Muir was a heroic figure. Turner's biography is every bit as monumental and inspiring as its subject.

To the Poetry of John Muir 1838-1914
Although John Muir was not a poet, he put plenty of poetic elements into his non-technical descriptions of the beauties of the west. These were taken out of his writings about the Sierras and set into stanzas by me.
    WATER-OUZEL (a bird)
Faint are the marks of any kind of life,
and at first you cannot see them or feel them at all.
But here is the blessed water-ouzel pleading,
    fluttering about amid the spray,
and blending his sweet, small, human songs
with those of the streams he loves so well.
And many other birds who build their nests here,
and the flowers with few leaves that bloom on the rocks
as if fallen like snow from the sky. WONDERS What wonders lie in every mountain day! Crystals of snow, plash of small raindrops, hum of small insects, booming beetles, the jolly rattle of grasshoppers, chirping crickets, the screaming of hawks, jays, and Clark crows, the 'coo-r-r-r' of cranes, the honking of geese, partridges drumming, trumpeting swans, frogs croaking, the whirring rattle of snakes

He moved to Wisconsin with his family as a child. "In God's wilderness is the hope of the world," he said. "The great, fresh, unblighted, unredeemed wilderness." In 1867, Muir embarked on his lifelong passion roaming on foot through the U.S. wilderness and writing about his discoveries. "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world," he explained. The environmentalist lobbied feverishly for federal action to protect the unspoiled beauty of nature and was responsible for establishing the Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. In 1992, he formed The Sierra Club , an organization dedicated to the preservation of wilderness.
