by Harold Parker Williams ,l . Murray Kay Prize Essay for 1899. On the 6th of January, 1832, fifteen determined men met in the African Baptist Church on Joy Street, Boston, and founded the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. Among them were Samuel E. Sewall, who in his early life lived on Cypress street, Brookline. He was the great-great-grandson of Chief Justice Sewall, the old Brookline land-owner; who in 1700 published “The Selling of Joseph" the first anti-slavery tract written in the United States. Samuel Sewall, with Ellis Gray Loring, afterward a noted citizen of this town, represented the more conservative element of the meeting; Garrison and Johnson the more uncompromising. The conservatives at first refused to agree to the constitution that was presented, but they soon signed, and entered heart and soul into the work of the society, This little assembly on Joy Street inaugurated the anti-slavery movement that in 1861 culminated in the Civil War. It aroused the whole of Eastern Massachusetts, and in almost every town there sprang up a small body of men eager to forward the good work.

Think Globally, Act Locally Up Excerpts from "History of the Town of Brookline" by John Gould Curtis (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1933)
CHAPTER X
BROOKLINE IN THE CIVIL WAR
If a difference of opinion on the justifiability of Negro slavery was a primary cause of the Civil War, it had also been, from very early times, in some degree a point of dissension in Brookline. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, slavery was not generally viewed with humanitarian horror, and New Englanders of high rectitude and commendable virtue owned both Negro and Indian servants, while indentured men and women were scarcely better off, until their time was up. Chief Justice Samuel Sewall, who was at least a property owner in Brookline, published as early as 1700 a pamphlet called The Selling of Joseph. This was probably the first move against slavery in this country, developing as it did the thesis of a letter which Sewall wrote to judge Davenport, wherein he said: The poorest boys and girls, in this province, such as are of the lowest condition, whether they be English, or Ethiopians, or Indians; they have the same right to religion and life, that the richest heirs have. And they who go about to deprive them of this right attempt the bombardment of Heaven; and the shells they throw will fall down on their own heads. It is certainly open to speculation whether Sewall's forehandedness in opposing slavery may not have been expression of the remorse which he felt after his somewhat panicky enthusiasm for the conviction of witches. When the witchcraft excitement had died down, and the judge was able to view the matter more judicially, he concluded that his conduct had been rash. In fact he was very much ashamed of himself, and said so publicly.

ISSUE 36: CHRISTMAS 2001
JAZZ LEGEND JAMS AT KES
Jazz legend Don Rendell, who played with the Stan Kenton band in the 1950’s, visited KES on the 5 th of December having played with the ‘Eddie Seales Big Band’ (which includes Mr. Dixon from the Music department) the night before. He gave a masterclass to an audience of ‘A’ level and GCSE Music students and woodwind players. Several students from Springwood High School were also present, Mr. Dixon told us. After going through his career, Don (now aged 75) spoke about jazz improvisation and worked with a number of saxophone, flute and clarinet players. He played 2 jazz classics ‘Autumn Leaves’ and ‘Mood Indigo’ with a backing band made up of Graham Godfrey on drums, Andrew Carter on guitar, and Jack Dixon on bass. The main message he had for the students was that the key to success is practice: hours spent on scales and arpeggios. After a photo call and autographs, the legend left the building…. th FORM BRAVE THE COLD FOR CHARITY SLEEPOUT Over the weekend of the 7 th and 8 th of December, 26 students and 4 staff spent a bitterly cold night in the sports hall car park, getting a taste of what life is like for homeless people over the Christmas period. The charity ‘Crisis at Christmas’ was being supported. Mr. Steer was accompanied by several doughty staff, including Miss Jones and Mr. Kyd. Mr. Maclean came along for moral support during an uncomfortable but cold experience for all involved.
