Thea Holme's 'Chelsea' includes:
'Near the house, the garden was arranged to do justice to the view. Ellis Heywood [who married More's niece] describes how, after dinner, More conducted his guests 'about two stones' throws into the garden, walked on a little lawn in the middle, and up a green hillock, where they halted to look round them. 'It was an enchanting spot, as well from the convenience of the situation - from one side almost all the noble City of London being visible, and from the other the lovely Thames, surrounded with green fields and wooded hills - as for its own beauty, being crowned with an almost perpetual verdure.'
Henry VIII appointed More Lord Chancellor in place of Cardinal Wolsey in 1529. This was much against More's wishes and he resigned the office in 1532. After his martyrdom, in 1535, his widow and family (at one time his 4 children, their spouses and their 11 children lived here) were turned out of the house. The widow was pensioned by Henry VIII and in 1544 housed on the estate. Sir Thomas was canonized in 1935. The house was subsequently the home of several grandees ending with the Beaufort family from whom Sir Hans Sloane bought it in 1737, when it was derelict, and had it pulled down.

PRIMARY RESOURCES AT THE STEVENS-GERMAN LIBRARY Middle Ages Printed primary sources for the study of medieval history are plentiful and can be found in our stacks, in other collections, in archives, and now more and more published on-line in digital format. A very good if somewhat dated guide to the variety and uses of sources that historians have available is by R.C.van Caenengem " Guide to the sources of medieval history " (D117 C2213). Another useful guide that leads students to the topical approaches historians bring to the study is Crosby’s " Medieval studies : a bibliographical guide Below are examples of sources and approaches that students have available in the Stevens-German Library. This is a representative and by no means complete list of resources available in the library stacks. Remember that bibliographies are very useful in identifying sources we do not have locally but that you may obtain through interlibrary loan .
Chronicles and Annals
Charters Biography Christian Church ... Economic and Political History Chronicles and Annals
are useful in studying national and regional history. Chronicles are compilations of facts obviously arranged in chronological order and frequently reaching back to the birth of Christ. They are particularly useful as a primary source for the period that the compiler is living in, often providing descriptions of political upheavals, violence, succession. Annals are brief descriptions, approximately a paragraph that record national and international events during the year. Annals that were recorded in monasteries and abbeys record local history as well. Examples of these sources that can be found in the Stevens German Library include:

Sir Thomas More (1478 - 1535)
English saint and diplomat, More was the author or Utopia and lord chancellor from 1529 to 1532. More had been one of Henry VIII's primary councilors. He began to fall out of favor with the king when he did not sign a letter urging the pope to declare Henry's marriage to Catherine void. In 1533 the Act of Restraint of Appeals cut judicial ties between England and Rome. Thomas Cranmer, the archbishop of Canterbury, declared the king's marriage to Catherine void on May 23, 1533. Anne Boleyn was crowned June 1. More was called to Lambeth on April 13, 1534 to confirm by oath the Act of Succession (March 1534) which, in part, declared the king's marriage to Catherine void and the one to Anne valid. More was willing to accept this. But he refused the oath because it also entailed a repudiation of papal supremacy. On April 17 he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. In 1534 the Act of Supremacy established the king as the supreme head of the Church of England. Denying this authority was considered high treason. More was tried in Westminster hall on July 1, 1535. He was convicted of treason for his refusal to affirm the king's supremacy. He was beheaded on Tower Hill July 6.

Sir Thomas More (1478-1535)
Sir Thomas More (later canonized St. Thomas More) is famous for his book Utopia (1515) and for his martyrdom. As Chancellor to Henry VIII he refused to sanction Henry's divorce of Queen Catherine. More was imprisoned, tried and executed. This drama was made into a play and an excellent (though not historically accurate) film - A Man of for All Seasons More is an excellent example of the early English Renaissance. He was friends with such humanists as Erasmus, John Colet, Thomas Linacre and others. Renaisance thinkers were mainly concerned with four ancient schools Aristotelianism, Platonism, Stoicism and Epicureanism. The alliance between Platonism and Christianity was as old as Saint Augustine, but had been revived in the Renaissance by Marsilio Ficino. Aristotle had been Christianized by St Thoma Aquinas. Christianity and Stoicism had many close connections from early on. Epicureanism was being Christianized by Lorenzo Valla and Erasmus. This process was to be continued by Pierre Gassendi.

Sir Thomas More to his executioner Sir Thomas More (1478-1535), the English statesman, author of Utopia , chancellor to King Henry VIII and one of Europe's foremost scholars, died for his principals - becoming a martyr in the Roman Catholic Church. Son of a London judge, More studied Greek, Latin, French, theology and music at Oxford, in the household of Cardinal Morton, and was pupil to John Colet (c.1467-1519) and Thomas Linacre (c.1460-1524). He completed his legal studies at New Inn and Lincoln Inn, was Reader for three years in Furnival's Inn, and spent the next four years in the Charterhouse in 'devotion and prayer'. As a direct result of his association with the new learning and his friendships with Colet, John Lyly (c.1554-1606), and Desiderius Erasmus (c.1466-1536), he became a fervent humanist and, before long, a successful London lawyer. He was known to be a man of admirable character and deep religious belief, with immense personal charm, penetrating wit and a bravery that enabled him to joke even on the scaffold.
