I think it's worth the money. A very sweet book. I found it a true value: a delight for Mitford series readers plus a chance to introduce the characters to the youngsters. My 10 year old dyslexic son now wants the Mitford series read aloud to him. Look at her children's books: Miss Fannie's Hat and Jeremy. The Mitford Snowmen Don't waste your money. It takes less that 10 min. to read and I didn't even find it very entertaining. I was so disappointed! I have enjoyed all of Jan Karon's other books but I feel she wrote a few lines to earn some extra cash. I am so disappointed I may not buy another thing that she writes!

work, for although her books sold at high prices, her income did not keep pace with her father’s extravagances. In 1837, however, she received a civil list pension, and five years later her father died. A subscription was raised to pay his debts, and the surplus increased the daughter’s income. Miss Mitford eventually removed to a cottage at Swallowfield, near Reading, where she died on the 10th of January 1855. Her Recollections of a Literary Life (1852) is a series of causeries about her favourite books. Her talk was said by her friends, Mrs Browning and Hengist Home, to have been even more amusing than her books, and five volumes of her Life and Letters, published in 1870 and 1872, show her to have been a delightful letter-writer. unjust to the Athenians. Hence his History of Greece, after having had no peer in European literature for half a century, faded in interest on the appearance of the work of Grote. Clinton, too, in his Fasti hellenici, charged Mitford with” a general negligence of dates,” though admitting that in his philosophical range “he is far superior to any former writer “ on Greek history. Byron, who dilated on Mitford’s shortcomings, nevertheless declared that he was “perhaps the best of all modern historians altogether.” This Mitford certainly is not, but his pre-eminence in the little school of English historians who succeeded Hume and Gibbon it would be easier to maintain. William Mitford’s cousin, the Rev. John Mitford (1781—1859), was editor of the Gentleman’s Magazine and of various editions of the English poets. Rating: Summary: A delightful book for everyone! Comment: Jan Karon has done it again! Not only has she kept me spellbound with The Mitford Years, but Jan Karon has created a terrific platform for children's books as well. Miss Fannie's Hat is a wonderful, true story about Jan Karon's own grandmother, that demonstrates the joys of sacrifice. A lesson can be learned from Miss Fannie‘I can only pray that Jan Karon writes more children's books about her grandmother! Rating: Summary: Wonderful Easter story Comment: Having read the Mitford series by Jan Karon, I was thrilled to discover she also has written children's books. I know a lady just like Miss Fannie at my church. It's a wonderful story for old and young alike. My women's group had everyone wear hats to their May meeting and shared this book with all the gals. They loved it. And the surprise at the back of the book is really enjoyed by my granddaughters.

Catalog: Book Manufacturer: Viking Press Authors: Jan Karon Release Date: April, 2001 Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours List Price: Our Price: Used Price: ThirdPartyNewPrice Price: More Details from Amazon.com Amazon international Product Reviews: I'd rather be in Mitford... An Uncommonly Beautiful Novella An uncommonly beautiful novella which goes back in time to sketch the wedding of Father Tim and Cynthia Coppersmith. The author takes us along this time, and the reader is permitted a kind and gentle glimpse into the minds and thoughts of many of our Mitford friends. A fascinating departure from the story telling of Mitford, we learn first hand of Dooley's unvoiced fears, Cynthia's own transition, and watch as Father Tim falls right off the cliff of independence and self sufficiency, and into the valley of late life romance. The reader will also learn who harbored a secret crush on Father Tim and who was late to wedding! Any lover of the Mitford books will appreciate the glimpses and insights this little book provides, but IT IS a novella, and not one of the long visits to Mitford we have to wait so long for! Actually, the second reading was more pleasurable than the first, since I took time to savor. The reviewers seem all over the place here - but mostly divided between those who knew what to expect, and those who didn't. So read up on the reviews and then virtually visit Mitford... As befits such a special occasion book, the artwork and layout are exquisite. Hopefully the volume of Father Tim's quotes will be as beautifully rendered.

At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon last updated 01/17/2000 09:50 AM Book Discussion for December 16 - 31, 1999 (click on book cover for more information) Discussion Questions from Penguin Putnam 1.What role does Barnabas play in Father Tim's life? What other characters seem to invade Father Tim's already busy life, only later to prove enriching elements? Are there any that are a permanent drag on his spirits? How does Father Tim come to terms with them? Barnabus was the first character in the book to invade Father Tim's life. Father Tim seemed to need Barnabus as a relaxing outlet to his busy and stressful life. Barnabus could accept Father Tim just as he is, the way we are accepted by Jesus. I think Father Tim needed this kind of a relationship. Everyone else had expectations of Father Tim. I think all the "invasions" on Father Tim's life lend something useful to him. Barnabus was needed as a Best friend, someone to keep Father Tim company and give him unconditional love. Dooley lent an interesting aspect to his life as well. He gave Father Tim the chance to impact a young person's life and to show him that people and God care. He also brought some "youth" to Father Tim's life. And even all the other minor characters that may at times seem intrusive, I think they all have a positive impact
on his life and he needs them all in some way. Puny was brought in to "take care" of FAther Tim, and Puny also needed someone to take care off, so here we see the "trade off" as we can in the other relationships as well.

The plot of Jane Eyre was conveyed by letter to Elizabeth Barrett Browning byher great friend, Miss Mitford. The novel clearly disturbed Elizabeth.

Florin Website Julia Bolton Holloway , 2003; Essay originally published in CHARLOTTE'S JANE EYRE AND ELIZABETH'S AURORA LEIGH E ssential to our understanding of the Victorian era are the novels read and written by women. The attitude of most men towards these books could be, however, scornful. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, for all her masculine learning in Greek, Hebrew and Chaldean, loved novel reading. She admitted defensively to Robert Browning, clouding her confession in an acceptable archaism: ' I am very fond of romances ; yes! . . . I am one who could have forgotten the plague, listening to Boccaccio's stories; and I am not ashamed of it'. In those letters written in her Wimpole Street sickroom days, she and Robert duelled with poetic erudition and Elizabeth, though she declared she was not ashamed, finally confessed to her obsession for novels as if it were a weakness as culpable as her opium addiction. Robert cuttingly did not respond to her enthusiasm for the genre. She particularly admired George Sand - of whom Robert could not approve. He had written scathingly of Sand's Consuelo in the Letters, August 14, 1845: 'I shall tell you frankly that it strikes me as precisely what in conventional language with the customary silliness is styled a
