1. Sage And Rosemary: Love Poetry - Mary Russell Mitford 1787-1855
Sage and RoseMary, soulmates, created this sensual website where couples and lovers can fall in love, rekindle love, and discover each other again. Mary Russell Mitford. The LoveSick Maid
http://www.photoaspects.com/snr/poems/mitford.html
Mary Russell Mitford
The Love-Sick Maid an imitation of the writers of the seventeenth century Stranger, dost see yon pallid maid,
Reclin'd beneath the willow shade,
Who still, with listless mien,
Plucks the wild flowers that round her gleam,
And watches them sail down the stream,
Trilling a sad wild air between?
Would'st hear, what dims those eyes so sheen?
Know, this it is to love!
'Tis thus, upon her lute to play,
Warbling the weary hours away,
Like plaintive Philomel; Yet, to one tender pensive song Returning still, the notes prolong, Still on that air enraptur'd dwell, Hark! 'tis the song he lov'd so well,- O this it is to love! It is, when with the painter's dies, She bids a new creation rise, Surpassing mortal grace; In Surrey's form, in Sydney's eye, In hero, or in Deity, With faithful pencil, still to trace Her lover's form, and look, and face; O this it is to love! It is to shun his very name, Yet thus in secret nurse the flame, As rain-drops feed the fire, So the blaze lit at Fancy's eyes, Sprinkled with tears and fann'd with sighs

On Being Requested to Write on Scottish Scenery
Fair art thou, Scotia. The swift mountain stream
Gushes, with deafening roar and whitening spray,
From thy brown hills; where eagles seek their prey,
Or soar undazzled in the solar beam.
But dearer far to me, be thou my theme,
My native Hampshire! Thy sweet valleys gay,
Trees, spires, and cots that in the brilliant ray
Confusedly glitter like a morning dream.
And thou, fair forest! lovely are thy shades,
Thy oaks majestic, over the billows pale,
High spreading their green arms: or the deep glades,
Where the dark holly, armed in prickly mail,
Shelters the yellow fern, and tufted blades
That wave responsive to the sighing gale.
A Canzonet
As in the bursting springtime over the eye
Of one who haunts the fields fair visions creep
Dims the quick fancy) of sweet flowers that lie
On grassy banks, oxlip of orient dye,
And palest primrose and blue violet,
All in their fresh and dewy beauty set

The Romantic Era
In 1789, William Lisle Bowles (1762-1850) wrote an influential sonnet sequence, Fourteen Sonnets , a sign of brighter times ahead for the form. As rational, witty, neoclassical seventeenth century poems written in heroic couplets gave way to major works in more open forms, the sonnet was somehow adapted to accommodate the literary values of this period. In many of these works one can sense the new worth placed on intuition and spontaneity. Second, perhaps, only to Shakespeare, William Wordsworth (1770-1850) is generally considered one of the greatest sonneteers. Writing over five hundred sonnets (mostly the early ones are still read), he ushered the form back into widespread use and also revived the sonnet sequence. Wordsworth continued the work of Milton in freeing the sonnet's subject matter from the conventional and treated the sonnet as a subjective "verse essay" in which to explore his emotions ( Among the well known poets of the Romantic period, John Keats (1795-1821) and Percy Shelley (1792-1822) wrote the sonnets most commonly anthologized "Bright Star" and "Ozymandius" , respectively. Other notable poets, including

His political sympathies and acts were carried so far as to bring about in 1848 his trial for treason-felony, and his transportation for 14 years. After his release he resided chiefly at New York, and edited various papers, and opposed the abolition of slavery; but in 1874 he was elected M.P. for Tipperary, for which, however, he was declared incapable of sitting. On a new election he was again returned, but died before the resulting petition could be heard. He wrote a Jail Journal , a work of great power, The Last Conquest of Ireland (perhaps) (1860) , and a History of Ireland of little value.
