"There is something almost tragical, something ghastly, in the notion of these thousands of spirit limbs haunting as many good soldiers, and every now and then tormenting them...when... the keen sense of the limb's presence betrays the man into some effort, the failure of which of a sudden reminds him of his loss" Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914) Introduction Phantom pain remains one of the most enigmatic and least understood of human afflictions. The term phantom is usually credited to the US military surgeon Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914), although prior to this it had been recognised by such figures as French surgeon Ambroise Pare (1510-1590), philosopher Rene Descartes (1596-1650) and the great neurologist Charles Bell (1774-1842). Bell published what is probably the first description of the condition in The nervous system of the human body in 1830 The nature of the problem Following limb amputation or deafferentation injury (eg brachial plexus avulsion) a number of sensations can be experienced which must be distinguished from phantom pain.

WORLD OF THE CHILD
Stories: After 1850

The second half of the nineteenth century was the golden age of children's literature in England and the United States. Great writers teamed with great illustrators to produce the books we still consider classics. The industrial revolution led to advances in printing which made books colorful, affordable, and plentiful. The growing middle class, with its increased interest in education, expanded the audience for children's books.
Uncle Tom's Cabin
One of the most influencial books of nineteenth-century America, was first published in book form in 1852. Within a year, simplified editions for children appeared in both the United States and England. In this retelling, portions of the story are in verse. An introduction states: "this little work is designed to adapt Mrs. Stowe's touching narrative to the understandings of the youngest readers and to foster in their hearts a generous sympathy for the wronged Negro race of America."

Jean Frederic Herbart and Education by Instruction
Book By Gabriel Compayre
Book Description: Jean Frederic Herbart (1776-1841) was at once a schoolmaster and a profound philosopher; and if it could be said of him that he was "the father of modern psychology," he has no less a claim to be considered the founder of a scientific pedagogy, with psychology as its basis. Gabriel Compayré is the author of History of Pedagogy, Montaigne and the Education of the Judgment, Peter Abelard and the Rise of the Modern Universities and Jean Jacques Rousseau and Education from Nature.
The American Revolution: A Continuing Commitment
Book By Library of Congress
Book Description: "This fifth symposium ... does not deal directly with the history of the Revolution but is rather in the nature of a stocktaking. What has the Revolution meant to America? Have we achieved our dreams or fallen short of them? What new problems face us as we - still a young nation in many ways but a world leader with heavy responsibilities - observe our Bicentennial...?" These questions - posed by Assistant Librarian of Congress Elizabeth Harner Kegen in her introductory remarks - and many like them were discussed in sessions held at the Library of Congress on May 6 and 7, 1976, under a grant from The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation. Departing from the approach taken in organizing the four previous symposia in this series, the Library of Congress invited representatives from disciplines other than history to evaluate America today in the light of the events of 200 years ago.
