Militia Kidnaps 6 Colombian Mayors Associated Press
November 19, 2001
By Jared Kotler BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - A right-wing militia announced Monday it was holding six mayors hostage to protest their attempts to reach grassroots peace agreements with leftist guerrillas in Colombia. Police confirmed that several mayors from war-riven northwest Antioquia state have been reported missing since Sunday. Top officials in Bogota, including Attorney General Luis Osorio, condemned the abductions and demanded the mayors be freed. In a communique, the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, or AUC, said it would free the mayors if they acknowledge their contacts with rebels pose a "high risk for the country." The mayors are part of a larger group who held discussions recently with the leftist National Liberation Army, or ELN, Colombia's second-largest guerrilla faction. The ELN and a larger insurgency, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, are battling government security forces and the AUC in the South American country's 37-year war. The mayors have asked the government to withdraw police posts from their towns in order to reduce the chances of civilians being caught in rebel attacks. But critics, including the government, say the mayors are bowing to guerrilla pressures and have no business engaging in direct talks with the rebels.

MILITIA OF TIlE UNITED KINGDOM The title of “ militia “ disappeared from the list of the British forces in 1908, on the conversion of the existing self-contained militia into an army “ special reserve “ which is restricted to the rOle of providing drafts for the first line.i The “ self-contained” second line army of the present day is the Territorial Force (see UNITED KINGDOM: Army). 1 Various dominions and colonies of the British Empire have militias, for, which see UNITED KINGDOM: Army. In 1690, on the occasion of the threatened French invasion, the militia was embodied; and again in 1715 and 1745 during the troubles caused by the Old and Young Pretenders. In a pamphlet of 1712 the English militia was estimated at 7450 horse and 84,391 foot soldiers. From 1715 until 1734, and again from that year until 1757, with the exception of 1745, no votes were taken in parliament for the militia. life or limb “; to prevent an unconstitutional use of the militia by the Crown, the estimate for its training was framed each year, not by an executive minister of the sovereign, but by the House of Commons itself. Upon the initiative of a committee of the house, an act was passed providing for the pay and clothing of the militia for the year. The king directly appointed the permanent staff and was given a veto on the appointment and promotion of the officers, who were to have a property qualification.

On 14 November 1910 Eugene Ely a Curtiss pilot, was the first pilot to take off from a ship when he flew from an 83 foot wooden deck platform built over the ram bow of the U.S. Navy cruiser Birmingham at Hampton Roads in Chesapeake Bay. For that flight Ely had used a four cylinder, water-cooled 50 Horse power Curtiss gasoline engine. Ely was also the first pilot to arrested land on and take off from a ship's flight deck. This occurred on 18 January 1911 when Eugene Ely successfully landed on and took off from the cruiser U.S.S. Pennsylvania in San Francisco Bay.

For a week prior to Eugene Ely's arrival in Eureka the Humboldt Times newspaper ran a series of articles advertising the exhibition flights planned for the 27th and 28th of May 1911 including a 3" by 3" photograph of Ely's historic flight off the cruiser U.S.S. Birmingham. Some local Eureka businessmen had planned this exhibition as a moneymaking proposition, which in the end turned out to be a failure for the backers.

On the 26th of May 1911 Eugene Ely, in company with his wife, her young sister Mercy Hall, his manager Norman Devaux, and two mechanics: W. Hoff and P. J. Rooney arrived on the steamer Iaqua in Humboldt Bay. With them was a Curtiss pusher aeroplane crated and with at least 4 extra engines. This group was met at dockside by the Fifth Division California Naval Militia (Eureka), City dignitaries, businessmen and a crowd of over 100 people.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~poindexterfamily/Page4.html
1st Sergeant John S. Poindexter
Company C, 14th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, U.S.
John S. Poindexter was born June 25, 1838 in Greene County, Illinois, the second son of Kentuckian Ambrose B. Poindexter and his wife, Virginia-born Polly (Clark). When he was a boy of about ten, the family moved to Missouri, first to Carroll Co. and soon thereafter to Lawrence Co. One assumes he grew into the vigorous life of all young men, learning to work hard, keep his word, and certainly to ride a horse amongst the green, wooded hills of southwest Missouri. And idealism, or at least an awareness of events beyond their local sphere, may have been instilled in him by his father, who served Lawrence County as a Justice of the Peace. John grew to a tall young man, two inches under six feet, with dark eyes that could reflect storms within. His youthful strength would soon meet its greatest test. With the election of a lanky Illinois lawyer to the presidency in November of 1860, the die of change was cast. The country held its breath as a new word found prominence in the national lexicon; succession. First one, then a half-dozen Southern states performed the pen-strokes severing the sacred ties of Union. Arsenals and other Federal property came under seizure by these states. On April 12, 1861, South Carolina troops fired upon and forced the surrender of a stubborn little garrison called Ft. Sumpter. Meanwhile, Missouri endeavored to remain clear of these entanglements, a resolution of neutrality initially being passed by the 1861 State Convention. Yet within Missouri, the coals of war dully smouldered.

ACEH: Indonesian-backed militia behind terror?
BY LESLEY McCULLOCH In the remote area of Aceh Tengah (central Aceh) there is a new and growing problem for the civilian population: the presence of Indonesian-backed militia. The rarely visited area has experienced a devastating attack on its social and economic fabric. The enclave's economy has almost ground to a halt, many schools and clinics have been destroyed, and whole villages burned or deserted. The smell of fear is tangible. Official local government figures for 2001 state that more than 1900 houses were burned in this small district alone, and there were almost 400 conflict-related deaths. To the local population of only 300,000, this is a devastating blow. However, the real figures are substantially higher. A local journalist (whose identity must be protected for fear of reprisals) has been keeping his own tally of the death and destruction. He alleges that more than 2200 houses were burned and 450 died. In addition, many people have disappeared (presumed dead), many others have been tortured and several thousand have fled the area. The casual observer may be forgiven for assuming that this violence too, as elsewhere in Aceh, is the result of actions by the military and police. And to a degree it is. But there is a more sinister element in this remote area.

East Timor militia intimidation continues
By Vannessa Hearman DILI Pro-independence forces and United Nations Assistance Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) workers are very confident that the referendum in East Timor on autonomy or independence, now scheduled for August 30, will go ahead without problems. The UN, headquartered in what used to be a teacher training college, is highly visible in Dili, but while there is broad agreement that its presence has resulted in less militia activity, the situation is still tense and the streets are deserted at night. Pro-independence activists, in particular, stay indoors after dark. On August 1, outside UNAMET's Dili regional office, Angelino Amaral, a 24-year-old bank worker, was shot three times by two masked men on a motorcycle. The gunmen were reported to be from the Aitarak militia. When Amaral died, local residents set alight the house of the suspected murderer. In regional areas, to which members of organisations such as the Student Solidarity Council have travelled to carry out voter education, the security situation is still bad. On the road between Dili and Ermera, villagers have deserted some hamlets, and houses and market stalls are being forced to fly the Indonesian flag. In Ermera, the state primary school has been closed until after the ballot and others, such as the Imaculata Conceicao Catholic primary school, are employing only male teachers because of the lack of security.

I. Introduction
In 1814 a Pennsylvania militiaman failed to muster when called to federal service. He was then tried, convicted, and fined by a military tribunal convened under authority of the state of Pennsylvania. This simple exercise of military authority in wartime raised federal issues of sufficient complexity that after six years of legal wrangling, the matter arrived before the United States Supreme Court. The case upholding the validity of the conviction was Houston v. Moore

Gun terror of Kabul's liberators
Northern Alliance militia loot and plunder in defiance of new government's deadline to disarm
The Observer , January 13, 2002
By: Suzanne Goldenberg, Kabul
It was a gruelling 48 hours for police captain Mohamed Sabber Abbasi - a kidnapping, burglary, attempted car jacking and a double shooting. And that was just his immediate family. But what galled Abbasi most as he lay in hospital with a bullet hole in his side was that the criminals were the militiamen who claim to have liberated Kabul from the Taliban. 'The policemen from before are all gone and these people are looting and plundering the city,' he said. 'They are all bad people. They have no human sentiment and no mercy - from the highest commander to the very lowest ranks.' In Kabul, the Kalashnikov rules. Two months after the capital fell to the troops of the Northern Alliance, men in combat gear loiter on street corners with rocket launchers and assault rifles, or screech around the capital in pick-up trucks with blacked-out windows. The troops were supposed to have left the city by yesterday afternoon - the deadline for the disarming and evacuation of the militias set by the interim leader of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai. There is little sign that will happen, suggesting that the government will have to move cautiously to avoid a head-on confrontation with the thousands of armed men roaming the streets.

Afghanistan: Northern Alliance Shows Taliban Supporters No Mercy
By Bruce Pannier The positive news about Northern Alliance military gains in Afghanistan is being undercut in part by reports of atrocities committed against foreigners fighting alongside the Taliban. While many claims cannot yet be confirmed, there are enough reports to raise concern. Prague, 14 November 2001 (RFE/RL) Many are cheering the military advances of the Northern Alliance in recent days in their campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Backed by the bombing of a U.S.-led coalition, the Northern Alliance has ousted the militia from several provinces in the north and the east of the country, including the capital city, Kabul. But many onlookers, including human rights organizations operating in the country, are worried about the growing number of reports of unnecessary killings and summary executions of Taliban soldiers, particularly of non-Afghan soldiers fighting among the Taliban's ranks. Reports of atrocities first emerged on 9 November, after troops allied to the Northern Alliance captured the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. It was the first major city in Afghanistan to fall to the Northern Alliance.

East Timor Mercy Ship heads for Dili
By HT Lee
In response to the humanitarian crisis in East Timor a Mercy Ship will be sailing from Darwin to Dili in time for the 8 August independence referendum.
The East Timor Mercy Ship project will carry emergency supplies such as food, medicines, clothes and tents for displaced Timorese refugees. The ship will also have on board doctors, nurses, priests, nuns, politicians, unionists and other volunteerstheir presence will help to make it more difficult for the pro-Indonesian militia to use violence to intimidate Timorese during the crucial move towards independence. The patron of the project is Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jose Ramos Horta. It is supported by organisations such as the Mary MacKillop Institute for East Timorese Studies. During World War II 60,000 East Timorese sacrificed their lives protecting and helping Aussie troopsit's time to repay the debt. The NSW Labor Council is supporting this project and encourages all affiliates and unionists to participate. Summer clothes such as cotton T-shirts, trousers and women's clothes are urgently needed as well as donations for the project.

Mercy Otis Warren's Gendered Melodrama of Revolution
by Nina Baym
Among the many Massachusetts intellectuals who wrote to support the patriot cause before and during the American Revolution, Mercy Otis Warren (1728-1814) was the only woman. [ ] She was especially acclaimed in her day for two political plays, The Adulateur and The Group (1775). Published but apparently not performed, these satires excoriated the Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson and his administration as greedy unprincipled sycophants. Two historical tragedies in blank verse, The Ladies of Castile and The Sack of Rome, appeared in a 1790 volume titled Poems, Dramatic and Miscellaneous. Both these plays featured republics undermined from within by loss of civic virtue; the theme implies an authorial hope of influencing national politics. And Warren's major work, a three-volume history of the American Revolution running to more than twelve hundred pages, elevated the revolutionary leaders as paragons of republican virtue to be revered and imitated. This work, called
