This is contrasted with "higher level" disciplines which focus on "laws of social structure, social change, and cultural patterning." (G. Allport 1954, p. 5, in G. Lindzey Handbook of Social Psychology ) Allport nominates Comte for the honor of founding social psychology. "[T]he true final science i.e., morale, is able to systematize the special knowledge of our individual nature, by virtue of an appropriate combination of the two points of view, the biological and the sociological (Comte, 1852 [seen in Allport, 1954]). Most early theories were simple and sovereign. That is, they tended to have a single principle to account for social psychology. Examples include:

Upstream People : Hans J. Eysenck
Hans Eysenck has been described as the most influential psychologist of his generation. A refugee from Nazi Germany, he fled to England and the pupelage of the eminent psychologist Sir Cyril Burt. His academic work focused on the scientific study of personality and intelligence, and he was considered the most cited psychologist of his generation. At the same time he became a highly successful popularizer of academic psychology. Eysenck was unusual amongst university academics, being equipped with a spine - he joined battle on many fronts, earning considerable notoriety in certain quarters as a result. In particular his thoughtful, and cautious, treatment of race and intelligence (in response to the storm caused by Jensen in the United States) led to an international campaign to deny him a platform at universities, and several violent disruptions. At the time of his death in 1997, Eysenck was the de-facto leader of the London school of differential psychology, noted for its realism about hereditarian factors in human psychology, and traceable back to Sir Francis Galton (the eminent Victorian and cousin of Darwin). His hard-edged intellect and enquiring spirit will not be replaced easily, as the rise of empirical evidence to support the role of heredity is met with fierce and concerted ideological opposition and intellectual suppression.

William McDougall: An Introduction to Social Psychology
From its origin in the works of Auguste Comte and Herbert Spencer, social psychology has struggled with the fact that human beings are both social and biological in nature. For Comte, the course of mental development was one in which social conditions came to modify the operation of biological laws. The study of human psychological processes, therefore, required a sociological perspective. The biological point of view with its emphasis on the individual was inadequate for the analysis of social facts such as cooperation, division of labor, interdependence, cultural transmission, and family life. Spencer, on the other hand, gave a distinctly individualistic and biological cast to his social theory. For Spencer, mental and social evolution were continuous with the biological evolution of the species. The combined actions of persons in groups could be explained in terms of principles characterizing the actions of individuals as biological organisms. Specifically social categories of analysis were unnecessary because the analytic principle 'that the properties of the units determine the properties of the whole they make up, evidently holds of societies as of other things.'

    Encounters with Parapsychology
1982, 243 pages, 6" x 9", ISBN: 0-9610232-1-X, $12.00 In this volume I have gathered a series of non-technical essays from the present and the past by persons of exceptional intelligence who encountered parapsychology in the course of their professional careers and who eventually became leaders or advocates of research in this field. These essays will allow readers to form their own opinions as to the reality of ESP without a knowledge of statistics or of any specialized branch of science. Busy scientists will find this book a quick and relaxing introduction to the field. Below I have described from the book the contributions of some eminent figures of the past.
Sir William Barrett (1844 -1925), professor of physics and Fellow of the Royal (scientific) Society of London was instrumental in founding the (British) Society for Psychical Research in 1882. He describes some of his experiences with children that convinced him of the occurrence of mental telepathy. William James (1842 -1910), the foremost American Psychologist of the 19th century used this memorial address to describe the work of

Will is character in action (William Mcdougall)
    1. Acknowledge your own responsibility. Admit that if you sit around doing nothing, you will achieve nothing. 3. Take a few deep breaths. Relax and let go of any tension. Pause and visualize the action as if it were already completed. Study the image of the completed project in your mind for a few moments. This step prepares both your conscious mind and subconscious for action. 4. Now act. After doing so, you will feel a sense of relief as you free yourself from the stress that comes from ignoring an important task. Second, you will enjoy the pleasure of accomplishment. Third, you will discover the task was easier to do than you first imagined.

With his successor Pareto he established the so-called Lausanne School of economic theory. His early career was unsuccessful he twice failed the entrance exam at the École Polytechnique in Paris for lack of adequate preparation in mathematics, and a coöperative bank he founded went bust. But his book Éléments d'économie politique pure (1877) is now recognized as one of the first mathematical analyses of general economic equilibrium, and he is credited, independently of Menger and Jevons, with inventing the marginal utility theory of value. It is in this latter connection that Mises mentions his name.
