LT. COL. JOHN McCRAE, M.D., [1872-1918]
IN FLANDER'S FIELD THE ANXIOUS DEAD
IN FLANDER'S FIELDS
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. By: Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D., 1872-1918
THE ANXIOUS DEAD
O guns, fall silent till the dead men hear Above their heads the legions pressing on: (These fought their fight in time of bitter fear, And died not knowing how the day had gone.) O flashing muzzles, pause, and let them see The coming dawn that strikes the sky afar; Then let your mighty chorus witness be To them, and Caesar, that we still make war.

JOHN McCRAE
John McCrae was born November 30, 1872. He wrote "In Flanders Fields", his famous poem, during one of his military services which began early in his life. At the age of fourteen, he joined the Guelph Highland Cadets, eventually earning the rank ofFirst Lieutenant. Later he joined the Royal Artillery and in 1899, served as a combat officer in theBoer War. During the First World War he served as a Medical Officer and was promoted toLieutenant-Colonel in charge of a medical unit. John McCrae took his studies seriously while at the GCVI. He earned a scholarship to theUniversity of Toronto at the age of 16 and graduated with honours. He briefly attended theVeterinary College in Guelph, and later studied medicine at the University of Toronto. He later didpost-graduate studies at McGill University. This extensive education led him to help save many livesin the Boer War and World War One. "In Flanders Fields" was written in a dugout in Ypres in 1915. Some say it was inspired bythe death of a comrade. By writing this poem, he made the poppy the symbol of remembrance. JohnMcCrae died of pneumonia in Ypres on January 28, 1918. He was buried in Wimereux, France. In honour of John McCrae, his Guelph home was made into a museum, and an elementaryschool on Water Street was named after him.

John McCrae "In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row..." - John McCrae, 1915. In what would become the best known poem from the "Great War", John McCrae was solemnly describing the horror, suffering and loss that he saw as he treated the wounded who had fought near Ypres, Belgium - an area known as Flanders. It was here that the Germans first used deadly chlorine gas in their attacks. Undoubtedly, John was not spared of its poison. According to some accounts, the death of a friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, who was killed by a shell on May 2 1915, greatly affected McCrae. When Lieutenant Helmer was buried later that day, it was McCrae who performed the funeral ceremony in the chaplain's absence. John McCrae was born (November 30 1872) and raised in Guelph, Ontario, where the McCrae home still stands, serving as a museum. John graduated from the University of Toronto medical school, receiving the gold medal, in 1898, but soon found himself leading an artillery battery in the Boer War. Years later, when the Great War began, he felt compelled to enlist as soon as possible. No one could have imagined the horrific events that would unfold in the next four years, but John was one of many witnesses who saw the bitter fruits of War. Like thousand of school children, I memorized the words to John's moving poem. May I never forget them, nor the sacrifice made by brave soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom, and now lie in Flander's Field.

    We Will Remember Them
This page was made in dedication to my father's uncle John, who died at age 17 in France, during the "Great War", WW1. Also in rememberance of my father, John Alexander Lamb, (1921-1994) who serviced planes for the second World War, and later helped train young NATO pilots to keep the hard won peace. John McCrae (1872-1918): In Flanders Fields (1915) Canadian poet John McCrae was a medical officer in both the Boer War and World War I. A year into the latter war there was published in Punch magazine, on December 8, 1915, the sole work by which he would be remembered. This sonnet commemorates the deaths of thousands of young men who died in Flanders during the grueling battles there. It created a great sensation, and was used widely as a recruiting tool, inspiring other young men to join the Army. Legend has it that he was inspired by seeing the blood-red poppies blooming in the fields where many friends had died. In 1918 McCrae died at the age of 40, in the way most men died during that war, not from a bullet or bomb, but from disease: pneumonia, in his case. John McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle at Ypres in the spring of 1915.

    By John McCrae
I saw a city filled with lust and shame,
    Where men, like wolves, slunk through the grim half-light;
And sudden, in the midst of it, there came
One who spoke boldly for the cause of Right.
And speaking, fell before that brutish race
Like some poor wren that shrieking eagles tear, While brute Dishonour, with her bloodless face Stood by and smote his lips that moved in prayer. "Speak not of God! In centuries that word Hath not been uttered! Our own king are we." And God stretched forth his finger as He heard And o'er it cast a thousand leagues of sea. John McCrae was born Nov 30th 1872 in Guelph Ontario. He was the second son of Lieutenant Colonel David McCrae and Janet Simpson Eckford McCrae. He received his education at Guelph Collegiate and the University of Toronto medical school. As a young man John was also interested in the military. He had joined the Highland Cadet Corps at the age of 14 and at 17 he joined the Milita field battery commanded by his father; by 1896 he achieved the rank of Lieutenant. In 1898 John received a Bachelor of Medicine degree and the gold medal from the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario. When the South African War (Boer War) started in October 1899 John felt it was important to fight. He was commissioned to lead an artillery battery from Guelph. John sailed for Africa in December and spent a year there with his unit. He resigned from the military in 1904. After returning to Canada in 1901 John picked up his life where he had left off. The years after the war were very busy for the young doctor. He resumed his studies in pathology, which he had postponed, to go to Africa then went on to become assistant pathologist at Montreal General Hospital. In 1905 he set up his own practice as well as continuing work at several hospitals. On August 4, 1914, Canada declared war on Germany. Within three weeks, 45,000 Canadians had rushed to join up. John McCrae was among them. He was appointed brigade-surgeon to the First Brigade of the Canadian Forces Artillery with the rank of Major and second-in-command.
