"Charles Robert Maturin" In Supernatural Fiction Writers BALDICK , Chris. "Introduction" to Melmoth the Wanderer , Ed. Douglas Grant. New York: Oxford UP, 1998: vii-xix. Believes that this late Gothic novel is in the line of Godwinian doctrinaire fiction, althought "to attack Catholicism was not for Maturin, as it was for Lewis in his prurient Gothic novel The Monk (1796), an antiquarian fancy-dress frolic." To the detriment of the novel's effectiveness, "Maturin has overloaded the character [of the wanderer] with several functions working at cross-purposes." Parts company with the normal view of the novel as the greatest of the Gothics to expose its mediocrities and structural flaws. BLEILER , E. F. Introduction to The Wild Irish Boy BOSTROM , Irene. Studies the uncanny in Ludwig Tieck's "Der blonde Eckbert," E. T. A. Hoffmann's "Der Sandmann," and Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" from "a vantage point that adds a hermeneutic and philosophical dimension to the largely established psychoanalytic perspective" considering these stories and others as examples of that aspect of the Gothic that stresses "cognitive uncertainty." * FALVEY , Ellen Katherine. "Reconstructed Virtue: Grace King's Gothic Realism," Dissertation Abstracts International 54:4 (1998): 1163A (New York University). The Gothic aspects of Grace Elizabeth King's (1852-1932) fiction have not been extensively explored. Argues that the Gothic is the fictional mode best suited to express the socially and psychically unsettling war-made reversals of class, race, and gender hierarchies in the post-war South." King is a precursor to later "Southern Gothic" writers such as Faulkner, McCullers, and O'Connor. FALVO , Daniela. "La Tradizione gotica nella narrativa di Muriel Spark,"

Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia

Charles Maturin (1780-1824) Charles Robert Maturin , from The Cambridge History of English and American Literature Volume XIII. The Victorian Age, Part One, Bartleby.com: A brief but insightful essay examining Maturin's poorly received gothic dramas.-MJM Charles Robert Maturin: Melmoth the Wanderer , from The Cambridge History of English and American Literature Volume XI. The Period of the French Revolution, Bartleby.com: An analysis of Maturin's gothic novel. Here's an example of the criticism: "A worse constructed book hardly exists: for it is a perfect tangle of stories within stories. It has pathos, which, not unfrequently, descends to the sensiblerie of the imitators of Rousseau; and terror, which not unfrequently grovels to the melodrama caricature of Lewis himself generally, and his imitators almost always. But its central theme—the old bargain with Satan, refreshed and individualised by the notion of that bargain being transferable—is more than promising, and there are numerous passages, both in the terrible and in the pathetic varieties, which entirely escape just sarcasm."
