Manjur Karim reminded me that today is the 115th anniversary of the death
    of Karl Marx.
These remarks are from Engels' farewell to his friend at Marx's graveside,
on the 17th of March, 1883:
" On the afternoon of the 14th of March at a quarter to three the greatest
living thinker ceased to think. Left alone for less than two minutes,
when we entered we found him sleeping peacefully in his chair - but for
    ever.
It is impossible to measure the loss which the fighting European and American proletariat and historical science has lost with the death of this man. Soon enough we shall feel the breach which has been broken by the death of this tremendous spirit. His name will live through the centuries and so also will his work." (from Franz Mehring, KARL MARX. Michigan: The University of Michigan Press, 1973, pp. 531-532).

The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it. All our inventions have endowed material forces with intellectual life, and degraded human life into a material force. The writer must earn money in order to be able to live and to write, but he must by no means live and write for the purpose of making money. A commodity appears at first sight an extremely obvious, trivial thing. But its analysis brings out that it is a very strange thing, abounding in metaphysical subtleties and theological niceties.

Marx was born in 1818 of Jewish parents in Trier, in what was then the Rhineland province of Prussia. His father was a successful liberal lawyer who had been baptised when his job was threatened by anti-Jewish laws. Marx studied philosophy, history and law at the universities of Bonn and Berlin and gained his PhD from the University of Jena. Disappointed in his hopes of an academic career because of his radicalism, he turned to journalism. He was briefly editor of the Rheinische Zeitung until it was suppressed by the Prussian censorship. In 1843 he moved to Paris where he began a lifelong friendship and collaboration with Frederick Engels. In Paris he started another radical journal with Arnold Ruge, but this too was soon suppressed and, in 1845, Marx was expelled from France and moved to Brussels. In 1847 Marx and Engels helped found the Communist League, for which they wrote the Communist Manifesto (1848). In 1848, a year of revolutionary upheaval throughout Europe, Marx was in Cologne where he again edited a radical newspaper. After the failure of the 1848 revolution, the paper was closed and Marx was expelled from Germany. He made his way eventually to London, where he settled in exile for the rest of his life. In London he lived with his family on the brink of poverty by occasional journalism and with financial assistance from Engels (who had by then become a partner in the family cotton firm in Manchester). Aided by the resources of the British Museum Library, he devoted himself to producing a systematic theory of capitalism, embodied in the volumes of his major work

Chapter 11: Capitalism's Crises and Critics Marx had the good fortune, combined, of course, with the necessary genius, to create a method of inquiry that imposed his stamp indelibly on the world. We turn to Marx, therefore, not because he is infallible, but because he is inescapable. Everyone who wishes to pursue the kind of investigation that Marx opened up, finds Marx there ahead of him, and must thereafter agree with or confute, expand or discard, explain or explain away the ideas that are his legacy. - Robert Heilbroner, Marxism: For and Against
    Overview
Karl Marx (1818-1883) helped shape much of 20th century thinking about the nature of capitalism, the interrelationship of society and technology, even the very way in which we understand history. This chapter, after a brief introduction to some of the critics of capitalism who preceded Marx, will examine the major elements of Marxist thought as it applies to economics and to economic history. It will also explore some of the differences between Marxian economics and what has become mainstream thought in economics. Finally, from the perspective provided by more than 125 years of capitalism since the first volume of Capital was published (1867), we will evaluate some of the predictions that stemmed from Marx's theories.

Temeljni tokovi marksizma : za razumevanje Marxa je najbolje upo¹tevati tri komponente: romantièno, prometejsko in razsvetljensko komponento.
    Romantièna komponenta
    Prometejska komponenta
. Dopolnjuje se s prvo. Simbol èlovekovega prizadevanja, da ostane subjekt. Podreja stvarnost svojim potrebam. V delavskem razredu so skoncentrirane odtujitve, ta odtujitev bo vse moènej¹a in s tem bodo ustvarjanje objektivne mo¾nosti, da prevzame dru¾bo.
Razsvetljenska komponenta dru¾bena zavest ).

Karl Marx, the son of Hirschel and Henrietta Marx, was born in Trier, Germany, in 1818. Hirschel Marx was a lawyer and to escape anti-Semitism decided to abandon his Jewish faith when Karl was a child. Although the majority of people living in Trier were Catholics, Marx decided to become a Protestant. He also changed his name from Hirschel to Heinrich. After schooling in Trier (1830-35), Marx entered Bonn University to study law. At university he spent much of his time socializing and running up large debts. His father was horrified when he discovered that Karl had been wounded in a duel. Heinrich Marx agreed to pay off his son's debts but insisted that he moved to the more sedate Berlin University. The move to Berlin resulted in a change in Marx and for the next few years he worked hard at his studies. Marx came under the influence of one of his lecturers, Bruno Bauer, whose atheism and radical political opinions got him into trouble with the authorities. Bauer introduced Marx to the writings of G. W. F. Hegel, who had been the professor of philosophy at Berlin until his death in 1831. Marx was especially impressed by Hegel's theory that a thing or thought could not be separated from its opposite. For example, the slave could not exist without the master, and vice versa. Hegel argued that unity would eventually be achieved by the equalizing of all opposites, by means of the dialectic (logical progression) of thesis, antithesis and synthesis. This was Hegel's theory of the evolving process of history.
