Don Marquis Quotes
The successful people are the ones who can think up stuff for the rest of the world to keep busy at. Ours is a world where people don't know what they want and are willing to go through hell to get it. Middle age is the time when a man is always thinking in a week or two he will feel as good as ever. If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; but if you really make them think, they'll hate you. Every cloud has its silver lining but it is sometimes a little difficult to get it to the mint. Happiness is the interval between periods of unhappiness. An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all. A pessimist is a person who has had to listen to too many optimists. An idea isn't responsible for the people who believe in it. It is better to be happy for a moment and be burned up with beauty than to live a long time and be bored all the while. Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday. Man cannot be uplifted; he must be seduced into virtue.

Press of New England, paper, $15 (0-87451-000-1). DDC: 813. Newspaper columnists used to do more than publicize politicians' peccadilloes. They actually made up wacky stories and improbable characters. Such a columnist was Don Marquis (1878-1937), creator of archy, a poetic cockroach who dive-bombed a typewriter headfirst, one key at a time, to produce "vers libre" and the occasional ballade, all in lowercase letters and sans punctuation because archy, giving his all to strike a single key, had naught to spare to depress "shift." Somehow, not all of archy's stuff had been collected, and a few years ago, Marquis collector Jeff Adams presented archyology , which was a pretty good blast from the past. But Adams saved the best for last. Although references to World War I and Prohibition gently date it, Marquis' comedy is fresh and funny still, especially a detective-story parody in prose, "The Great False Teeth Mystery," which features archy as sleuth and which ran in progressively loonier installments and appears that way here. Think Carol Burnett joining Monty Python for a Sam Spade spoof, or cartoonist Gahan Wilson's tough-guy mystery burlesque, Eddy Deco's Last Caper

Donald Robert Perry Marquis (1878-1937) was a celebrated newspaper columnist in New York from 1912 to 1926. He also wrote 27 books, five plays and hundreds of poems and short stories during a life of public acclaim and personal tragedies, including the untimely deaths of his two children and two wives. Today he is remembered for his stories of Archy and Mehitabel an indomitable cockroach and a toujors-gai alley cat but in his lifetime he was perhaps best know for the Old Soak, an unrepentent souse during the dry days of Prohibition. The Old Soak was the title character of two books, a top Broadway play in 1922-23, and a silent movie in 1926 and a "talkie" in 1937. Marquis' newspaper columns also gave life to Hermione, a Greenwich Village dilletante, and more than a dozen other characters who chronicled the tumultuous events and fashions of their time. Marquis was one of the most quoted writers in Manhattan in the 1920s, when New York's literary scene was approaching its zenith. His newspaper contemporaries were Christopher Morley, Heywood Broun and the legendary F.P.A., Franklin Pierce Adams, but only Adams challenged Marquis for the heart and soul of New Yorkers of that era. The great writers who came soon afterward Robert Benchly, Dorothy Parker, James Thurber considered Marquis a New York icon.

DonMarquis.com Donald Robert Perry Marquis (1878-1937) was a celebrated New York newspaper columnist and humorist in the early decades of the last century. Today he is remembered mostly for his stories of Archy and Mehitabel, a lowercase cockroach and a toujours gai alley cat, but in his lifetime Marquis was known equally well for the Old Soak a hip-flask philosopher who struggled to endure the dry days of Prohibition. Altogether, he wrote five plays, dozens of books, and hundreds of poems and short stories. Marquis was born July 29, 1878, in rural Walnut, Illinois, and began his newspaper career setting type and writing for small-town weeklies. After brief stints as a reporter in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, he moved to Atlanta in 1902 and worked at the Atlanta News and the Atlanta Journal before taking a job with Joel Chandler Harris in 1907 as associate editor of the new Uncle Remus's Magazine. The magazine gave him nationwide exposure and also introduced him to his first wife, Reina Melcher, a freelance writer and budding novelist. In 1909, a year after Harris' death, Marquis moved to New York to seek his fortune. He worked at several New York newspapers before moving to The Evening Sun in 1912, where he parlayed a job writing editorials into a signed daily column, The Sun Dial. Marquis' column distinguished itself for its breezy mix of quips, commentary and humorous verse and for the farcical characters who chronicled the events and fashions of their time. In addition to the Old Soak and Archy and Mehitabel, the cast included Hermione, a Greenwich Village dilletante; Fothergill Finch, an affected poet; and Capt. Peter Fitzurse, an unreconstructed raconteur.
