22.13 Mandeville’s evidence that the world can be circumnavigated
The importance of Mandeville’s book to medieval explorers, lay in the 175 lines in which Sir John explains why he believes it is possible to circumnavigate the world. Sir John’s Travels dismiss centuries of the Church’s teachings in a a characteristically down-to-earth anecdote and ‘proves’ the world is circumnavigable by telling a strange story of a man who inadvertently travelled around it: [40]
I have often thought of a story I heard, when I was young of a worthy man of our country who went once upon a time to see the world. he passed India and many isles beyond India, where there are more than five thousand isles, and travelled so far by land and sea, girdling the globe, that he found an isle where he heard his own language being spoken.. He marvelled greatly, for he did not understand how this could be. But I conjecture that he had travelled so far over land and sea, circumnavigating the earth, that he had come to his own borders; if he had gone a bit further, he would have come to his own district.
It is difficult to know where Mandeville might have formulated his theory of circumnavigation but there is every likelihood that the medieval records indicating a John of sancto Albano studying at the University of Paris do indeed refer to him. If so, he would have certainly come into contact with John Buridan, who was central to these debates about the globe and had just put the finishing touches to this important treatise on whether the whole world was habitable.

Editorial Reviews (Courtesy of Amazon.com) Amazon.com
By the standards of the 14th century, the writing style of the man who called himself Sir John Mandeville is so informal as to be nearly chummy: "He who wants to pass over the sea to Jerusalem, may go by many ways, both by sea and by land depending on the countries he comes from; many ways come to a single end. But do not think I shall tell of all the towns and cities and castles that men shall go by, for then I must make too long a tale of it." Historians remain skeptical as to whether the author really did journey to the Holy Land and Egypt, or hire himself out as a soldier to the Great Khan of China. Whatever the case, it is indisputable that he is one of the first modern travel writers, as we have come to know the genre, and that his book was considered authoritative in matters geographical throughout Europeconsulted by Leonardo da Vinci and Christopher Columbus alike.

The first part deals with the land of Egypt and the second with "the lands beyond" -. But did he actually ever leave England Did this Knighted author actually exist? Was he French? We'll never know, but this volume is a thorough compendium of medieval mythic lore, which he artfully blends in collage-form (very much in the fashion of the allegedly "post-modern" writing), which would be a great success throughout Europe for centuries to come. One of these pleased readers would be Christopher Columbus, who here fed his imagination on the passion for distant travels!

After embarking on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1322, Sir John Mandeville did not return to his native England until 34 years later. Shortly after his astonishing arrival back home, he wrote the story of his fantastic journey eastward. Claiming to have visited India, China, Java, and Sumatra, he asserted that his travels proved that it was possible to sail around the world. The publication of The Travels of Sir John Mandeville caused a stir in the medieval world, significantly influenced several generations of intrepid Renaissance explorers, and inspired writers as diverse as Shakespeare, Swift, Defoe, and Coleridge. The most famous voyager of his day, Mandeville, who obviously embellished his exploits, was discounted and ridiculed by sober nineteenth-century scholars. In an ambitious attempt to unravel both the personal and the professional mystery of Sir John’s life, Milton sets off to follow Mandeville’s original route, immersing himself in the sights, sounds, and colors of the cities and cultures he documented, resulting in a delightful travelogue as well as a long-overdue resurrection of one of the most intriguing figures in the history of geographical exploration.

John Mandeville's writing of 1370 proved pivotal in the flurry of exploration that followed in the wake of 1492. His assertion that the world was a globe (flying in the face of accepted dogma) and that it was possible to travel by sea to the Far East, was THE incentive that drove the expeditions of hundreds of explorers and merchants. Later, the book was ridiculed as hokum, but Giles Milton felt there were enough grains of truth in the manuscript to warrant more research, which he does in his usual comprehensive manner. The result is a very readable unravelling of the mystery, shrouded as it was by the interfering pens of earlier 'editors'. Given the extent of the tinkering, we may never know the truth behind the 'Travels', but Mr milton uncovers enough evidence to show that Mandeville almost certainly DID travel to the Levant, but casts doubt on the veracity of his claims to have travelled to the Far East. The latter is understandably not well-researched, given the ambiguity of the literary data and lack of physical evidence, so only 4 stars.

Sir John Mandeville's Concept of "The Other" - A Dichotomy?
by R S Cartwright .2 Well, just because it may be against his (or their) creed doesn't make it wrong. This brings me to another concept. Language Games Yet, Sir John does so numerous times in the text. To give an example, Sir John, relating the Saracen view of the crucifixion, states in the text ...God would have acted contrary to His justice in allowing such a guiltless innocent to die; they say we are wrong about this. But it is they who are wrong This exerted influence always seems to center on religion for the most part. We always have this need to convert someone or some race that is not the same as we. Sir John referenced this point in his text .5 I should point out that not only is it a Christian tendency to do this, but a general tendency of humankind to make different people 'the same' (a semblance of equality which is impossible to attain). Equality is a myth. There is too much diversification for absolute equality. x p a n d e
