Essay is not that eventually population left unchecked will outstrip man's ability to live on this planet (as true a proposition to-day as it was in 1798); or that war, pestilence, and alike were natural checks against population (they are); but rather that we are all left with a Hobson's choice, with nature being the stable keeper.">

Introduction:- What many know, at least those with an elementary knowledge of economics or politics, Malthus is the surname of man, who, a couple of hundred years back, said that man, sooner or later, universally, will run up against himself; that the population of mankind will eventually outstrip man's ability to supply himself with the necessities of life. The Malthusian doctrine, as stated in "Essay on the Principle of Population," was expressed as follows: "population increases in a geometric ratio, while the means of subsistence increases in an arithmetic ratio." Well, that seems plain enough, and perfectly understandable if there is too many people and not enough food, then, certainly, there is going to be problems. Malthus developed his theory, at least to this extent: that left alone, no matter all the problems short of world wide catastrophe, humankind will survive, as, nature has a natural way to cut population levels: "crime, disease, war, and vice," being, the necessary checks on population." This proposition, as was made by Malthus in 1798, was to cause quite a public stir, then, and yet today.

'The edition is so good in itself that, especially for the scholar, but also for the general reader, it transcends the worth of the books included in it... A superb edition of a long-neglected and often misunderstood master.'

‘The flow of more specialised studies of various aspects of Malthus work continues unabated. This excellent edition can do nothing but stimulate anew such inquiries. Apart from its great scholarly value, it will be an attractive addition to any library, public, private or simply personal.’

schaft am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts

Dr McConeghy's ClassNotes #7 Ideas and Facts about Human Population Here are Definitions of some terms from class Population? Population is a complicated topic from many directions.
    • Is there a proper limit to the number of people on earth? Should everyone have the right to reproduce? Should everyone have the right to reproduce as much as they want? Do childless people have a responsiblity to pay for education, healthcare and support for children? Or, the other side of that coin is, if an elderly person has no children, whose responsibility is it to care for them? Is it better to have more people with a poorer life style, or fewer people with a richer life style? Do people with money have the right to take and waste more resources than they need, while other people starve or barely survive? How much does a person "need"? Do the resources of the earth belong to all humans , or to the humans with the biggest guns? Or to the humans who got to them first? Or, to the humans who can use them best? And what do we mean by "best"?

The Dixson Library will play a small but significant part in a national conference being held in Canberra in September. Entitled 'Malthus and his legacy: 200 years of the population debate', the conference will examine the impact of the British economist, Thomas Malthus (1766-1834), on population thinking from the late 18th to the 21st century.
The Dixson Library's contribution will be the appearance, in a public exhibition organised by the National Library, of an original letter penned by Malthus in 1825. The letter was donated to the Dixson Library by a member of the UNE Economics Department, Associate Professor John Pullen, who acquired it in 1985 in the course of his research into Malthus.
The letter refers to books that Malthus is about to read and publishers with whom he dealt. Written at East India College on January 18, 1825, it begins:
    Dear Sir
