James Madison (1751-1836)
Youth
Born March 16, 1751, the eldest son of the wealthiest landholder in Orange County, Virginia, James Madison was destined for a life of privilege and responsibility. The triad of land, slaves, and tobacco supported him throughout his long life, allowing him to concentrate on politics and the intellectual pursuits he loved. In 1769, after several years of local schooling and private tutoring, Madison entered the College of New Jersey at Princeton, where he was introduced to the thinkers of the Scottish EnlightenmentFrances Hutcheson, David Hume, and Adam Smith, among others. Madison proved a voracious student, consuming four years of course work in two and graduating in 1771. He returned home in 1772 and was soon drawn into a lifelong career in politics by the deepening imperial crisis.
Madison's Legislative Career
Madison served in Congress from March 1780, when the Revolutionary War had reached its nadir, to December 1783, soon after its triumphant conclusion. He was known as a conscientious legislator and admired for his committee work and his forcefully argued and closely reasoned speeches. Madison was among those who thought that the Confederation government needed to be invested with more power at the expense of the states. Though he engineered compromises in the spring of 1783 on taxation and import dutiesincluding the famous three-fifths ratio, in which for purposes of representation, five slaves would be equivalent to three free personsthe Confederation continue to lose power and prestige in the wake of the war's end.

Born into a respectable family of Virginia planters, Madison demonstrated intellectual gifts at an early age. He attended the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) for three years, continuing his studies even after he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1771. Returning to Virginia, Madison sank into a deep depression, longing for a vocation that would involve his passions, ideals, and intellect. He found his calling with the coming of the Revolutionary War; drawn into Virginia politics, he soon compiled an impressive record of service on both a state and national level, eventually serving as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1780. By 1787, as a delegate in the Constitutional Convention, Madison had established himself as the intellectual leader in the struggle to create a new, stronger federal government. Return to Essay

James Madison 1751-1836
Biography
Quote The oldest of 10 children and a scion of the planter aristocracy, Madison was born in 1751 at Port Conway, King George County, VA, while his mother was visiting her parents. In a few weeks she journeyed back with her newborn son to Montpelier estate, in Orange County, which became his lifelong home. He received his early education from his mother, from tutors, and at a private school. An excellent scholar though frail and sickly in his youth, in 1771 he graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton), where he demonstrated special interest in government and the law. But, considering the ministry for a career, he stayed on for a year of postgraduate study in theology. Back at Montpelier, still undecided on a profession, Madison soon embraced the patriot cause, and state and local politics absorbed much of his time. In 1775 he served on the Orange County committee of safety; the next year at the Virginia convention, which, besides advocating various Revolutionary steps, framed the Virginia constitution; in 1776-77 in the House of Delegates; and in 1778-80 in the Council of State. His ill health precluded any military service. In 1780 Madison was chosen to represent Virginia in the Continental Congress (1780-83 and 1786-88). Although originally the youngest delegate, he played a major role in the deliberations of that body. Meantime, in the years 1784-86, he had again sat in the Virginia House of Delegates. He was a guiding force behind the Mount Vernon Conference (1785), attended the

    Political Party: Democratic-Republican
Family: No children The fourth President of the United States. He is known as the "father of the Constitution" because of his influence of deliberations of the Constitutional Convention. His notes on the convention, first published in 1840, are the major source of information on the intentions of the framers of the US Constitution. The most scholarly of the founders for the nation, Madison was respected for the soundness and clarity of his arguments rather than the eloquence. Although Madison lacked a dynamic personality, "his luminous and discriminating mind," as Thomas Jefferson described it, was largely responsible for creating a government that met the needs of his own day and the test of time. Madison's Presidency was undistinguished in comparison to his contributions to the founding of the nation. (more later, including a picture)

To the press alone, checquered as it is with abuses, the world is indebted for all the triumphs which have been gained by reason and humanity over error and oppression. If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. It will be of little avail to the people, that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood . . . The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.

U.S. Presidents: James Madison (1751-1836) Brief biography of the fourth United States president followed by descriptions of major events during his administration. James Madison, the "Father of the Constitution," was born in Port Conway, Virginia, and educated at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). He was one of the earliest proponets of the American Revolution. In 1776, Madison was a member of the convention which drew up the Virginia state constitution. Four years, later he was elected delegate to the Continental Congress and in 1787 he was elected to the Virginia delegation to the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia 1787. Madison drew up a proposal for a constitution and submitted it to the convention. His proposal was later modified and called the "Virginia Plan." Madison collaborated with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay in writing a series of papers, called "The Federalist," in which they supported ratification of the new United States constitution. In 1798, Madison was elected to serve Virginia in the session of the United States House of Representatives. He served for four terms. During both of Thomas Jefferson's presidential administrations, Madison served as secretary of state. He followed Jefferson to the presidency, also, serving two terms. After his second term ended, Madison was inactive in national affairs and served as Rector of the University of Virginia until his death in 1836.
