BULWER-LYTTON, Edward George Earle
Born: May 25, 1803, in London, England Died: January 18, 1873, in Torquay, Devonshire, England Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton, also known as the first Baron Lytton of Knebworth, was a British politician, poet and novelist. He is best known for his historical novels. He was able to anticipate the public's changing taste in novels and to change his style to match the demand. Bulwer-Lytton was the youngest son of General William Earle Bulwer and Elizabeth Barbara Lytton. Their names were hyphenated when the general inherited Knebworth in 1843. The general died when Bulwer-Lytton was just a child and the family moved to an estate in Norfolk. Bulwer-Lytton was privately tutored and prepared for Trinity College, University of Cambridge. He won the Chancellor's medal for Sculpture , a poem, in 1825. He obtained a bachelor of arts and a master of arts degree, graduating in 1826. He was granted honorary degrees from Cambridge and Oxford after he became famous. After graduation, he traveled Paris and Versailles with a £1000 allowance from his mother. When he returned to London, he established himself as a colorful character. In 1827, he married Rosina Doyle Wheeler, against his mother's wishes who consequently cut him off financially. Bulwer-Lytton became a writer to support himself, working for various magazines, including Quarterly Review and Books of Beauty . Published in 1828, Bulwer-Lytton's first novel

Piula Publications Long Pocket The Aboriginal name for Long Pocket in Brisbane was Tuwong, meaning koel cuckoo. Lota The pioneer pastoralist, William Duckett White, and his wife Jane started building the house at Manly which they called Lota after her home in Cork, Ireland, in 1855. They occupied it in 1863.
Both William and Jane were Irish. They came to Sydney with two children in 1840. He had several positions over the next few years including that of school teacher and property manager, but it was the move north to manage Beaudesert Station for his cousin, J.P.Robinson, that brought them into the Moreton Bay area. He bought Beaudesert and then went on to acquire a vast area of land between Beaudesert and the coast. Later he expanded his pastoral interests into North Queensland where he successfully pioneered the Devon Shorthorn cross. He was a foundation member of the prestigious Queensland Club, sat for a short time on the Legislative Council but was not really interested in politics. He died in August 1893 at the age of 86, six years after his wife. He was a staunch supporter of the Anglican Church at Tingalpa.
Lowood The name was suggested by the low brigalow scrub in the district and was given to it by the Railway Department in 1884. The area had previously been known as The Scrub and the school as, first, Upper Tarampa, and then Cairnhill.

http://www.fidnet.com/~dap1955/dickens/family_friends.html
S cenes of family harmony and cozy firesides in many of Dickens' stories seem in stark contrast to his own family life. Growing up, the family situation was often precarious due to his father's trouble with debt, which landed him in debtors' prison in 1824 when Charles was 12.
L ater Dickens' own family was marked by strife as his relationship with his wife deteriorated and his sons seemed to have inherited their paternal grandfather's trouble handling finances. Dickens once lamented that he had "brought up the largest family with the smallest disposition for doing anything for themselves". Dickens' extended familie's constant drain on his finances, along with his built-in anxiety about money caused by his childhood, resulted in Dickens never feeling comfortable enough about his financial situation.
D ickens' circle of friends consisted of people prominent in the arts, journalism, publishing, politics and public life. A loyal friend who demanded loyalty in return, lines were drawn during Dickens' very public separation from Catherine. Those not sympathetic to Dickens' side soon felt his wrath, in some cases, forever.
John Dickens (1785-1851) - Dickens' father, was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office. In 1809 he married

A Benedictine cell was founded here at the close of the I2th century by the lord of the manor, Richard Fitz-Roger. His son THOMAS (1744-1779), who succeeded as 2nd baron, played some part in the political life of his time, but his loose and prodigal habits were notorious, and he is known, in distinction to his father " the good lord," as the wicked Lord Lyttelton. He left no lawful issue, and the barony became extinct; but it was revived in 1794 in the person of his uncle WILLIAM HENRY, ist baron of the new creation (1724-1808), who was governor of S. Carolina and later of Jamaica, and ambassador to Portugal. The new barony went after him to his two sons. The 3rd baron (1782-1837) was succeeded by his son GEORGE WILLIAM LYTTELTON, 4th baron (1817-1876), who was a fine scholar, and brother-in-law of W. E. Gladstone, having married Miss Mary Glynne. He did important work in educational and poor law reform. He had eight sons, of whom the eldest, CHARLES GEORGE (b. 1842), became 5th baron, and in 1 Sir Thomas (or Thomas de) Littleton, the jurist, had three sons, William, Richard and Thomas.
