The linked Supernatural Horror in Literature
Supernatural Horror in Literature is an essay, written by H. P. Lovecraft, which makes a survey of the field of supernatural horror, from the roots of fantastic literature to the time of the essay's writing. The purpose of this page is to let readers of the essay know more about the authors and works Lovecraft describes, and this purpose is accomplished by supplying links to web sites dealing with these authors. Please accept the fact that not all authors covered in the essay have web pages written on them, and thus information on them is sparse. Brackets indicate that Lovecraft does not mention any works by the author; a few works have been inserted for the sake of the reader. If you know of any sites dealing with any of the authors covered here, please send the author a letter

    Mooresville, Ala., 131 pp.
Background note: In 1812, John T. Peebles moved from Northampton County, North Carolina to Mooresville, which is up near the Tennessee border of Alabama in Limestone County. John's brother Robert joined him, and opened up a store in the thriving little town. Robert married Sophia C., who was born in New England and was probably in the south working as a school teacher when she met her husband. Sophia was an ardent Methodist, and taught bible class and Sabbath school. After the Civil War, which had wiped out all of the family's wealth except for their land, Sophia opened up a school in her house, and taught for eight hours a day, in addition to overseeing the various domestic "departments," as she referred to them. Robert and Sophia had four children, Henry Alden Peebles, who died of typhoid when he was seventeen, Robert, who also died young, a child who died in infancy, and Frank, who lived. Frank worked in his father's store, and briefly attended school in Lebanon, Tennessee probably Cumberland University before the Civil War interfered with his attempt to get an education. Frank was 18 when war broke out, and it is unknown if he took part in the fighting. After the war, Frank and his father formed a partnership and began again to run a store.
Scope and contents: This volume contains a journal kept by Frank Peebles between September 1861 and April 1862 (25 pp.) and a journal kept by his mother, Sophia, from September 25, 1865 through June 1868 (70 pp.). Sophia used the last thirty-six pages of the volume as a copybook.

History of the Sacred School of the Adepts and Magi (summarized) Introduction For seekers of the truth we present a very condensed history of the Magical Tradition of the Sacred School of the Adepts and Magi , beginning at the Middle Ages. To remain firmly faithful to this History, we could say that the tradition of the Magi begins much earlier that the Middle Ages or even the Christian Era. In fact, the history of this Fraternity, Priesthood and Sacred School of the Adepts and Magi is lost beyond historical records, if we recall that three of its Members visited the baby Jesus in his manger, a fact registered and established in the Bible: Mathew 2: 1-2 . At that time, according to oral tradition passed down to us, this Fraternity and the Sacred School was already quite ancient. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the times of King Herod, from the Orient came the Wise men to Jerusalem, saying: Where is the king of the Jews, who has been born? For we have seen his star in the East and we come to worship him -Mathew 2: 1-2 However, the records documented are vague, actual documents are scarce and the systems of record keeping in those times were not easily transmissible. For the moment, we prefer- and we will complete this in the future- to start this history at the Middle Ages, era where it becomes easier for us to track down this tradition that gave origin to our present and
