The God of War Although this fiery and tempestuous image is hardly conducive to the existence of life, Mars has, nevertheless, fascinated mankind more than any other planet. At first glance, Mars seems very Earthlike: it is the nearest planet whose surface we can see; it has polar ice caps, drifting white clouds, raging dust storms, seasonally changing patterns on its surface and even a 24-hour day. It is thus tempting to think of it as an inhabited world and has consequently become a mythic figure onto which we have projected our earthly hopes and fears. canali , an Italian word for grooves or channels. Schiaparelli made no mention of the nature of these canali , but, unfortunately, the word was translated into English as canals , a word that implies man-made (or, in this case, Martian-made) constructions and thus a Mars mania swept across Europe and America. Mars as the Abode of Life (see excerpt in Reading 9: Lowell, Percival, Mars as the Abode of Life , Macmillan 1908). Is Mars Habitable? The War of the Worlds (1898), whose opening lines retain their haunting power to this day and reveal the strange blend of hope and fear that humans feel when considering the possibility of life elsewhere, a kind of elated paranoia.

Jotta voisimme ymmärtää tilannetta paremmin, on syytä mennä yli 100 vuotta ajassa taaksepäin. Palaes-saan nämä voitaisiin havaita aina Marsissa asti.

Lowell
The next opposition of Mars after 1892 occurred on October 20, 1894. At 41 million miles (65 million km), Mars was slightly farther away from the Earth than it had been in 1892. But the greater distance was more than offset by the red planet's greater altitude in northern skies. Indeed, this proved to be one of the most memorable oppositions in the history of Martian exploration-not least because of the emergence on the scene of Percival Lowell, of whom one of his biographers rightly said that "of all the men through history who have posed questions and proposed answers about Mars, [he was] the most influential and by all odds the most controversial." Ideas about Martian life had been floated by Schiaparelli, Flammarion, and others, but it was left to Lowell to fashion them into a coherent whole. Percival Lowell was born in Boston on March 13, 1855, the eldest son of Augustus and Katharine Bigelow Lowell (fig. 12). There was blue blood on both sides of the family. An ancestor, Percival Lowle, had come to what later became known as Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1639. A Bristol merchant, Lowle had followed John Winthrop, the "Lodestone of America," to the Massachusetts Bay Colony at the advanced age of sixty-seven-an undertaking that attests to the almost manic energy that characterized many of his descendants as well. In addition to their energy, the Lowells tended to exhibit talents for mathematics and literature. Percival Lowell had both in unusual degree, as well as a personal magnetism that many who knew him remarked. Thus journalist Ferris Greenslet wrote: "This reporter has met many of the so-called great men of his time, but none with a more potent personal quality than Percival Lowell. He agrees with another witness that one felt it before, or almost before, he entered the room. It was as if one had been suddenly deposited in a powerful magnetic field."

LOWELL, PERCIVAL (1855 - 1916), American astronomer, was born at Boston, Mass.. March 13. 1855 He Graduated from Harvard in 1876 and then engaged in business. He began to specialize in astronomy in 1894 and established the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz., for the purpose of exhaustive planetary research. He was particularly interested in observing Mars and wrote books such as Mars us the Abode of Life (1908), urging that the Martian canals represented vegetation along artificial waterways. Later the canals were photographed. Lowell became the leading authority on Mars, and maintained that all evidence pointed to the existence of life on Mars. He assiduously observed Mercury and Venus, but his greatest contribution was the announcement of a probable trans-Neptunian planet. Lowell and W. H. Pickering , working independently, predicted the position of this planet, which in 1930 was announced as Pluto. He died at Flagstaff, Ariz., Nov. 12, l916.

Becoming interested in astronomy, he established (1894) the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz., and devoted himself to making personal observations. It was his belief that Mars was inhabited and that the striations on the Martian surface were artificial waterways. He also contended that there was a planet beyond Neptune (confirmed in 1930 by the discovery of Pluto). From 1902 he was nonresident professor of astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Pluto
Pluto, the outermost and smallest planet in the solar system, is the only planet not visited by an exploring spacecraft. So little is known about it that it is difficult to classify. Its distance is so great that the Hubble Space Telescope cannot reveal its surface features. Appropriately named for the Roman god of the underworld, it must be frozen, dark, and dead. Pluto's mean distance from the Sun is 3,687.5 million miles (5,900 million kilometers). There is evidence that Pluto has an atmosphere containing methane and polar ice caps that increase and decrease in size with the planet's seasons. It is not known to have water. The Hubble Space Telescope's faint-object camera revealed light and dark regions on Pluto indicating an ice cap at the planet's north pole. It is not known if there is an ice cap at Pluto's south pole. Pluto has the most eccentric orbit in the solar system, bringing it at times closer to the Sun than Neptune. Pluto approached the perihelion of its orbit on Sept. 5, 1989, and until Feb. 1999 was closer to the Sun than Neptune. Even then, it could be seen only with a large telescope.

Founder of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, strong supporter of the theory of canals on the planet Mars, first to realize the possibility of a ninth planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. Percival Lowell was born in 1855 to a distinguished New England family. His younger brother was president of Harvard University and his sister was a well-known writer. Lowell also attended Harvard and graduated in 1876 with a distinction in mathematics. After traveling in the Far East for a number of years, he eventually developed a fond interest in astronomy. He was particularly interested in Mars and its "canals" that had supposedly been discovered by the Italian astronomer, Schaparelli. In 1894, Lowell founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The observatory was ideally situated at an altitude of 7000 feet. The high altitude combined with the dry desert air made this site ideal for observing Mars, which was at that time very close to the Earth. Lowell observed the red planet for 15 years. He made intricate and detailed drawings of the planet's surface showing a complex network of intersecting lines and dark regions. Lowell believed these lines to be canals built by an advanced civilization of intelligent beings. He asserted that these canals were being used by a desperate race to transport precious water from the planet's icy poles. The dark regions were believed to be oases of green vegetation made possible by the irrigating canals. Lowell published these theories in three books:
